That's the referee from Mali right over there, officer.
You Write the Caption is back
It has been quite some time since SBI stopped running the popular 'You Write the Caption" series, but I'm here to announce that we are bringing it back. For those of you new to the site, YWTC is a regular series where we take a photo with comedic potential and let SBI readers give us their take ...
He's not in BAD position at Villarreal, but I really thought I'd be seeing him head back to England. People get on him for his lack of goals, but the truth is the man-child ripped it up last year. English defenders couldn't handle him except to hack his legs out. There were so many games where he had half the opposing back four booked by halftime. And in not that many starts/minutes, he led Hull City in assists (and woulda had more if his club-mates could finish...I'm talking about YOU Richard Garcia). How many Americans have ever led a Premiership club in assists before? Whether for the USA, or for his club, Jozy generates goals for his team at a blistering pace. He was in the top 20 in the league in that category.
I fully expected Blackpool or West Brom or somebody would try to get him on loan, esp after an impressive World Cup. After all, in South Africa he came about three feet in total from a hat trick. In truth, I'd be disappointed if he stays in Spain this year.
Is staying at Villarreal a good move for Altidore?
when Jozy Altidore trotted onto the field for Villarrea's Europa League match against Dnepr Mogilev (a 5-0 win) on Thursday, he not only made his European tournament debut, and made his first official appearance for Villarreal in almost two years. Altidore also made it that much more unlikely t...
AND he led his club in assists.
New possibilities emerging for Altidore
Photo by ISIphotos.com Two clubs have stepped up their interest in the Jozy Altidore sweepstakes. Besiktas is hoping to acquire Altidore, who would join former Villarreal teammate Nihat Kahveci should he land on the Turkish club. Besiktas will need reportedly need a five or six million euros...
Agree with the ratings basically except for Gooch. How does he get a 5 and not a 3. He was abused on both goals. Same as England really but Timmy bailed him out.
Does Gooch start vs. Algeria? I don't think we can afford to take the chance.
USA 2, Slovenia 2: A Look Back
Photo by Joe Toth/ISIphotos.com The U.S. men's national team pulled off one of the best comebacks in World Cup history on Friday, only to have a tragic referee's decision deny a victory for the ages. There is no denying the team endured a rough first half, a disappointing start considering th...
But as long as BB brings Torres, he can pick anyone he wants (even Bornstein...). Did you see the video where Torres called the Champions League final?!! The guy brings his ability to see the future to the pitch where he sees plays develop before they happen.
Thoughts on the U.S. World Cup roster
Photo by John Todd/ISIphotos.com Now that we have had a few hours to digest the selections made by Bob Bradley for the 23-man World Cup roster, it is time to take a step back and think about what the selections mean, and what the team looks like now. Here is my piece for Fox Soccer on the sel...
I'm not convinced Gooch is a problem. He was fouled on that goal big time.
The more I think about it, the more I like Findley. Without Davies, we have the need for speed.
Defense in general is the worry. We've basically gotten into the habit of shipping about three per game as of late. That's a lot to ask our front line to cover up. Brazil shoulda had four in a half and Honduras missed a PK or it would be worse.

Thought Ching showed me something last night with his hold-up play. Don't really understand why Findley was taken over him. Love seeing Gringo Torres, but he was always a lock I think. Bornstein apparently dates Bradley's daughter or something. I don't what he has to do to lose his spot. Extra dribbling cones would be a better use of space on the plane than bringing that guy.
USA World Cup Team Announced
Robbie Findley, Edson Buddle and Herculez Gomez have been chosen to try and solve the U.S. team need at forward after all three were named to the USA 23-man World Cup roster. Veteran striker Brian Ching did not make the squad in the most surprising omission, while wing options Alejandro Bedoy...
I think the copier should've shown him a second yellow first. Or was the copier saying that the second offense for dissent was a straight red?? If so, that was an overly harsh decision.
Donovan's new ESPN commercial
Jozy Altidore recently made his ESPN commercial debut, but he isn't the only current U.S. national team player to score one of those prized slots. Landon Donovan can be added to a list that includes the likes of Alexi Lalas and Tab Ramos, national team players to be in an ESPN commercial, with t...
Ives I think you're the only one left outside of ESPN that's "shock[ed]" when Bornstein doesn't play well. Sometimes I wonder, are you Peruvian or Honduran??
Wednesday Kickoff: Decision Day looms for USMNT
Photo by John Todd/ISIphotos.com Today is the day the U.S. men's national team reveals its 23-man World Cup roster and after last night's 4-2 loss to the Czechs, the picture is a bit clearer as we move closer to the announcement (1:20pm, ESPN). Herculez Gomez helped his case, as did Robbie Ro...
This is correct, this "one-goal" bashing of Jozy has to stop.
When you consider the way Jozy manufactured goals for a team that only outscored Rooney by 8 goals on the season, it paints a much diff't picture.
Jozy scored or assisted on 8 of Hull City's 34 goals (23.5%). Rooney scored or assisted 31 of Utd's 86 goals (36%). When you consider that teams can't just play Rooney since Utd has other options, but defenses can concentrate all their efforts on Jozy (lest they feel the wrath of Craig Fagan???), even this difference makes sense. Then, considering that Rooney started twice as many games as Altidore, it's not unrealistic to say that Jozy is the more productive player. Numbers don't lie.
Tuesday Kickoff: England cruises, Argentina rolls and more
Good morning all. The U.S. men's national kicks off its World Cup preparations tonight when it takes on the Czech Republic (8pm, ESPN2) in a friendly that will decide the roster fate of several fringe players. On Monday, it was the U.S. team's opening World Cup opponent in action as England'...
