I never noticed it before, but in this picture W's smile is strikingly similar to Laura's usual "First Lady smile."
Your Turn: The "W," Bubba and (Deep Pocket) TD Bank Show
What about this picture? Bush-Clinton Policy Talk Strikes a Congenial Tone (NYT) (caption: Former Canadian Ambassador to the U.S. Frank McKenna (L) moderates a discussion on global affairs between former U.S. Presidents George W. Bush (C) and Bill Clinton (R) at a convention center in this han...
Sorry, caraf, I didn't see your post before I responded.
Pregnant Moment At Notre Dame
Enthusiastic Obama supporters + supporters of dialogue + deft handling of the obnoxious heckler = great day for the Doctor. On the protest side, there were plenty of gruesome posters (links withheld); Alan Keyes getting arrested; and more tape reminiscent of the bad old days. But what earns an...
I was a women's clinic escort (1989-1998). The feet are a "pro-life" symbol called "precious feet." Many demonstrators wore gold or silver finished "precious feet" pins. The fetal feet and hands are formed fairly early. I've never seen the symbol used with the cross before.

I'll give you odds that teapot was "Made in China".
The Sacred And The Profane
These photos emerged for me this week as defining images -- ones that actually have a larger resonance going forward. The first photo is from Obama's "major speech" on the economy at Georgetown. The second one was taken at a GOP tax protest in Atlanta. What I appreciate, first off, is how str...

Rove, TwitPics, Hugs And Guns
Ah, wingers. Now that Rove has discovered Twitter and (perhaps the aptly named) Twitpics, he can self-promote in a whole new way. Besides this photo posted on the 11th (now I'm starting to appreciate why people chafe when I refer to pictures as "shots"), here is a sequence of rela...
Appropriate--here is a man who takes the Constitution as seriously as did the founders.
Your Turn: George Washington Obama
We looked at a couple of historically-inspired renditions during the transition (1, 2), but this (titled "The First") is The New Yorker's cover choice for Obama's first week in office. I'm interested in your read. (illustration: Drew Friedman. New Yorker cover. January 26, 2009)

Turn! Turn!
With the economy tanking, the photo op has to do with hyping small business tax cuts. A few takes: 1. Echoing the "dumb grin" photos from the Middle East, seems like this last year in office is just some kind of joy ride. 2. Despite obvious signals, still fighting the turns. 3. As usu...
In his current top article Greg Palast posts another picture of Clueless George festooned with a gold chain given him by the King of Saudi Arabia. (Gold jewelry is considered effeminate in Arab/Muslim cultures.)
Georgie never gets it.
