Cyprus is preparing for total financial collapse as the European Central Bank turns its back on the island after its parliament rejected a scheme to make Cypriot citizens pay a levy on savings deposits in return for a share in potential gas futures to fund a bailout. On Wednesday, the Greek-Cypriot government voted against asking its citizens to bank on the future of gas exports by paying a 3-15% levy on bank deposits in return for a stake in potential gas sales. The scheme would have partly funded a $13 billion EU bailout. It would have been a major gamble... Continue reading

Liquefied natural gas (LNG) technology—from LNG seaborne tankers and LNG trains to floating LNG facilities have quickly gone from concept to commercialization, opening up new possibilities in new frontiers and rendering the remote—well, much less remote. Analysts say FLNG terminals will become a major growth market within the next couple of years, as they offer more flexibility than stationary terminals. Liquefaction of natural gas is the process of super-cooling natural gas to minus 260 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 162 degrees Celsius) at which point it becomes much safer and easier to transport. After its been shipped to its destination, regasification plants... Continue reading

Russia is back. President Vladimir Putin wants the world to acknowledge that Russia remains a global power. He is making his stand in Syria. The Soviet Union acquired the Tardus Naval Port in Syria in 1971 without any real purpose for it. With their ships welcomed in Algeria, Cuba or Vietnam, Tardus was too insignificant to be developed. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, Russia lacked the funds to spend on the base and no reason to invest in it. The Russian return to the Middle East brought them first to where the Soviet Union had its closest ties.... Continue reading

The Mediterranean has joined the shale game, but as most of Europe’s Mediterranean countries drag their feet, all eyes are on Israel, Turkey, and Algeria. For Israel, it will be a slow road without the majors. For Algeria, it’s full speed ahead, in theory—but the foreign interest is just dabbling for now due to a lack of shale infrastructure. For Turkey, the situation is more promising thanks to a renewed interest by the majors and a near-perfect blend of good governance and attractive fiscals. Here’s what the playing field looks like: Turkey Turkey is the best bet here. In Turkey,... Continue reading

Though the euro crisis appears to have mostly faded from the headlines lately, the economic trouble in Europe isn't going anywhere. Perhaps one of the best illustrations of this is the array of staggering youth unemployment rates across the eurozone, many of which are at all-time highs. In a note to clients today, Societe Generale's cross-asset strategists warn that given the high rates of youth unemployment, euro-area governments still face very real threats to stability: 'Social unrest still a concern... Economic crisis in developed countries have reinforced unemployment, especially with the youth. In 2013 southern economies plagued with large unemployment... Continue reading

http://investorseu.com/Z3z8vL MADRID—Spain has been quietly tapping the country's richest piggy bank, the Social Security Reserve Fund, as a buyer of last resort for Spanish government bonds, raising questions about the fund's role as guarantor of future pension payouts. Now the scarcely noticed borrowing spree, carried out amid a prolonged economic crisis, is about to end, because there is little left to take. At least 90% of the €65 billion ($85.7 billion) fund has been invested in increasingly risky Spanish debt, according to official figures, and the government has begun withdrawing cash for emergency payments. http://www.ifaonline.co.uk/ifaonline/news/2233552/mps-sants-knighthood-reveals-disease-in-honours-system A pair of MPs have criticised the decision to award a knighthood to Hector Sants, the former chief executive of the Financial Services Authority (FSA). Sants (pictured), who presided over the regulator during the financial crisis, is alleged to have been recommended for the award by Chancellor George Osborne, who also encouraged him to stay on after his decision to retire in 2010. Politicians from across the spectrum alleged Osborne had offered Sants a knighthood in order to persuade him to continue in his role. Conservative MP Douglas Carswell told the FT: "Surely this says something about how diseased... Continue reading

Making predictions in the short run (the coming year or two) is a fool's game. There are too many unpredictable twists and turns in the real political/economic/cultural world. But we can attempt to make plausible statements for the middle run (a decade or more) based on a workable theoretical framework combined with a solid empirical analysis of trends and constraints. What do we know about the world-system in which we are living? First of all, we know that it is a capitalist world-economy, whose basic principle is the ceaseless accumulation of capital. Secondly, we know that it is an historical... Continue reading

'Because of what they perceive as reckless speculative risk-taking by banks, many refer to banking as a casino. And so let us think of the alternative loans and investments a bank can make, as the alternative bets on a roulette table. On it there were for instance “Safe Bets”, black or red, with a payout of 1 to 1; “Intermediate bets”, columns, with a payout of 2 to 1; and “risky bets”, any number, with a payout of 35 to 1. All bets had a similar expected value of return, the same risk-adjusted return, though in the case of the... Continue reading

'The blight on Ramaphosa's reputation now is his conduct around the events building up to the massacre at Marikana in August. Ramaphosa is a shareholder in Lonmin, whose workers embarked on a wildcat strike for higher wages, which then led to the police shooting of striking mineworkers. Early next year he is set to testify before the commission of inquiry into the massacre after his communication with government leaders and Lonmin executives was revealed at the commission. In one damning email, he called for "concomitant action" against the "criminal" protesters, which is perceived to be one of the reasons the... Continue reading

The thing about Too Big to Fail financial firms is that they tend to be Too Big to Fail in several countries at once. Hence, the "shared strategy" laid out in a new joint paper from of the FDIC and the Bank of England that aims to protect taxpayers from paying for the rescue of gigantic multinational corporations. Even if it’s just a set of principles, any sort of action on cross-border resolution has been a long time coming. Certainly the folks at Gazprom are having a good snigger, revelling in the mockery that has been made of what should have been a landmark Ukraine-Spain gas deal that would have loosened Russia's gas grip on Kiev. Everyone wondered how Russia would respond to Ukraine's attempt at gas independence. But this is what happens when you mess with Gazprom. It was a horrible moment for Ukraine last Monday—all the more horrible because the whole event was televised—when the historical $1.1 billion deal it was about to sign with Spain's Gas Natural Fenosa turned out to be fake. Why was the... Continue reading

Shale Gas Will be the Next Bubble to Pop – An Interview with Arthur Berman The "shale revolution" has been grabbing a great deal of headlines for some time now. A favourite topic of investors, sector commentators and analysts – many of whom claim we are about to enter a new energy era with cheap and abundant shale gas leading the charge. But on closer examination the incredible claims and figures behind many of the plays just don't add up. To help us to look past the hype and take a critical look at whether shale really is the golden... Continue reading

In his U.S. Equity Strategy Weekly note last week, RBC Capital Markets' Myles Zyblock wrote about how it is becoming increasingly difficult to be a good stock picker (i.e.someone who doesn't just invest in index funds). "At a basic level, we highlight the trend increase in performance correlation as an important marker of this phenomenon," he writes. In other words, stock market investors are increasingly producing similar returns. One reason for this is that that stocks are becoming increasingly correlated with each other. And it's not just within regional markets. Markets across the world are coming correlated with each other.... Continue reading

'The Foreign Office has been swift to condemn recent Spanish naval incursions into British Gibraltar Territorial Waters. And rightly so. Gibraltar, like the Falklands, is a British Overseas Territory, with full internal self-government through an elected House of Assembly. Its 29,000 inhabitants, who overwhelmingly are British citizens, have no wish to be part of Spain, as they emphatically demonstrated in a referendum held in 2002. Britain’s relationship with Gibraltar dates back more than 300 years, and The Rock’s continuing success and prosperity is testament to its strong sense of sovereignty and self-determination. The Spanish Ambassador has already been summoned to... Continue reading
