Kyle Brandt, a system administrator, asks Should Developers have Access to Production? A question that comes up again and again in web development companies is: "Should the developers have access to the production environment, and if they do, to what extent?" My view on this is that as a whole... Continue »

Numbers are important to us. However, it is important to remember that the number of items in a list tells people a lot more than just what is on the list: Remember me. Comparison Things to keep in your head The quantity is more important that the details. via everythingsysadmin.com Continue »

Don't have all specs with me; this is a 2008 model 6400 with dual power. It would be a $70,000 load balancer if I had the license key or password, but since I don't, it's a 2u server that was too big to fit in my moving truck. Pick it up under tree in front yard, 3924 bibbits dr, palo alto. I just moved away... U could prob sell this on eBay for more than free. I didn't have time or space. Or install Linux! via sfbay.craigslist.org Reblogging the whole thing because it'll disappear in a week. :P Continue »

Ten good habits to adopt are: Make directory trees in a single swipe. Change the path; do not move the archive. Combine your commands with control operators. Quote variables with caution. Use escape sequences to manage long input. Group your commands together in a list. Use xargs outside of find. Know when grep should do the counting -- and when it should step aside. Match certain fields in output, not just lines. Stop piping cats. via www.ibm.com I wouldn't say that these are necessarily *my* top ten, but I think it's a valid and respectable list! And I learned a... Continue »

Anyway, just FYI, here's a quick summary of where GNU grep gets its speed. Hopefully you can carry these ideas over to BSD grep. #1 trick: GNU grep is fast because it AVOIDS LOOKING AT EVERY INPUT BYTE. #2 trick: GNU grep is fast because it EXECUTES VERY FEW INSTRUCTIONS FOR EACH BYTE that it *does* look at. via lists.freebsd.org (... via Andrew's blog.) I always wondered this but never looked into it; most of the interesting bits are a variation on the Boyer-Moore string search algorithm. Continue »

Look down at your feet. Are you wearing these shoes? Now look around you. Are you trail running through the forest? Are you climbing rocky unstable terrain, clinging like a billy goat to the mountain side? Are you moving silently though dense jungle underbrush, the dappled sunlight, filtered by the canopy high above, all but absorbed by the black matte finish of your Walther P88 held low and ready as you creep towards the mountain hideout of the guerillas who have kidnapped the president? If so, carry on and let me not distract you from your mission! However, if you... Continue »

The bees were picking off runners everywhere on the trail. Doug was spared, as the runner ahead of him got one to the back, while the runner behind him screamed obscenities as another bee attacked his arm. I was targeted upper right thigh. Nature is always quick to remind us... Continue »

Yesterday, I became aware of some changes that Facebook is going to be making in the next few weeks. The changes are annoying to me (and probably everyone else who develops applications on Facebook) because it means I have to go redesign and refactor some stuff to fit the changes. It got me thinking, though, about how normal Facebook users will react. I'm approaching five years of working at Six Apart**, ten years of being a social network user, and I've been a Facebook user since the early days. If there's one thing I know about this upcoming change, it's... Continue »
