On routines
Dear all I'm finally settling into a routine: get up early (well, early for me - alarm goes off at 7.30), do academic work in the morning (editing/researching for Kristine on Mondays and Fridays, my own on Tuesdays and Wednesdays,... Continue reading

Carlyle, and Hardy
Dear all, This has been a good post-PhD week: I finished two novels. Carlyle's Sartor Resartus, and Hardy's Far From the Madding Crowd. I had never read anything by Carlyle before, but I picked up this one years ago after... Continue reading

The autumn air is sweeter...
Dear all, I am back - back for good, that is. The summer was spent working, and pottering about, moving my stuff over from the Fatherland, conferencing, and going to the Fatherland. Grandpa passed away. I submitted the final copy... Continue reading

Viva, or Dr des.
Dear all, This is Dr des. Ossianknits. I had my viva a week ago, and I passed with minor corrections. Yay! I was dreading the whole affair. I get very nervous about exams and interviews, but this one was actually fun. I hung out in my supervisor's office beforehand. We chatted, I gave him his gi...

Endspurt
Dear All, January has come and gone, and I have spent most of it away from home. We got back from the fatherland on Sunday, laden with wine and beer. There was much eating, much beer drinking, wine tasting and... Continue reading

Snowday, or rather -week
Dear all, The coldspell continues. We have had an awful lot of snow - over a foot now! The sheep are cold, we are cold, and the roads are very tricky. This is the view from our front door: Snow on top of the wall. Well, the hole I made in the snow: By the side of the road. Sunken in to m...

Aw - but you always seem to take such wonderful trips!
Weve been in New Haven for two weeks now, working hard on our respective PhDs. But were off to San Francisco this weekend - Peters father is working out there for a couple of months and invited us to visit! So exciting!!
A Met(s) sort of day
Dear all, The third - and last - day was museum day! We started at the Cloisters (so.worth.the.long.subway.ride) and ended at the Met. And at night we took in a Mets game! I loved the Cloisters - maybe my favourite New York bit. It's a fake Italian fake monastery in the northern part of Manhatt...
We didnt make it to any knitting shops in NY! (but have since bought yarn at various ones in Connecticut!) It was a great day out, though thoroughly exhausting. I loved it, and am thinking of heading back for the day before I leave America at the end of the month - were only 26$ return and an hour and a half by train from NYC.

Dear All, On our second day in New York we did the proper tourist package: We went down to the Bowling Green early in the morning... Caught the ferry... And ended up on Liberty Island! We enjoyed the view back to Manhatten... Caught a noon-day service at Holy Trinity (Heere a...

Dear All, Has it been a month already? Elijah is enjoying his new home very much. He only stayed in the hospital for a week or so and is now enjoying the view from grandma's couch. He is in great company there: a British winnie-the-pooh and a Canadian sergeant buckybeaver. Grandma's surgery went...
Thanks Anne! Were having lots of fun so far. Its a workholiday, though, so most days are spent at my desk :). I miss home though - everything is so American here! I even bought an enormous waterbottle for myself!
New York, NY
Dear all, On our second day in New York we explored its cultural assets: mainly the Strand bookstore on broadway near NYU and its neighbouring Forbidden Planet comic book store. We spent the afternoon in the American Museum of Natural History. I particularly liked the dioramas! We came away from...
Ha! Quite. Though it was filled to the brim, and it was Strongbow (we joked about the head last time we were there).
