I don't think it's okay, but I think it's inevitable. It's a result of a world where people are too short-sighted to vote for taxes that fund their own public services. So utilities and fire departments resort to charging fees. And when people don't pay their fees? They get no services. I was actually happy to see this fire, ONLY because I hope it gets people talking about the mentality of wanting everything yet paying nothing.
A Disaster Pictorial
This week continues to be…well, damned yukky. I spent all day yesterday washing loads of King sized bedding on the “sanitary” setting, which means uber-hot water and much lengthier cycles. Then remaking the bed, which is pretty much like wrestling an alligator with all those King-sized component...

Friday dog-blogging: back to basics
I started an entire, pretty lengthy Friday blog post this morning. Suddenly all the text disappeared, leaving just the picture below. This isn't the first time this has happened since Typepad "improved" its product. I walked away from the computer... Continue reading

I've been keeping up with you through the various outlets over Christmas break, and my heart goes out to you. It's like a transition time for everybody. I'm sure your thoughtful attitude will help you both come out the other side as friends.
And…He’s Off
At the butt-crack of dawn on Sunday morning, I climbed into the day-before’s-clothes and drove Nate to the airport where I dropped him off curbside. (Some impatient asshat behind my car in the drop-off lane had the audacity to lay on his horn while I was hugging my uniformed sailor goodbye. Have...

Friday fun: playing virtual hookey
God tweets about making the universe. You know, in my head, God always sounds like a cheerful young girl, and now there's this blog post. Freaky. It's not to early to plan this awesome Christmas light display. Superhero - comic strip mashup - I'm a sucker for any and all Family Circus and De...

I love it. When my daughter was in fourth grade, it seemed a shame to have her merely construct a mission from a prefab kit at Michael's, so in January we took a 3-day road trip to see a few up close and in person. It was a trip that meant a lot to us both (but probably for different reasons). Mission Impossible sounds like one of those non-holidays that family hotel chains could capitalize on.
California Missions: The Fourth Grader's State-cation
MomCentral is currently running a blog campaign on behalf of Holiday Inn to encourage people to get out and explore their own states-- a "state-cation," if you will. I'm not a native Californian, so this idea intrigued me, since there is a great deal about the state I live in that I don't kn...
