True, Wendy, and if we as leaders won't model that kind of living it probably won't happen in our people. We are fighting a broken religious system - a consumeristic Christianity (and society). We celebrate sacrifice & risk as long as it doesn't affect us or our comfort. You guys certainly didn't do that! That's awesome. You are modeling for others a "renegade" life. Keep at it!!

Wally, So true, Wally. When people like that show up at The Journey, we are often telling them they need to think about going back to their previous church, but if they are not, that it will only be a matter of time before they are disappointed here, because their needs won't be met here either. Not only is the "being fed" issue a problem because of inactivity (which it absolutely is), but just think if someone goes somewhere to "get fed". What will they get in a year? 20-30 hours of teaching? Is that really going to feed them enough (or even enough to counteract the 1500 hours of tv feeding that they are getting)? The longer I pastor, the thing that saddens me the most, is people who are already believers and they choose safe, consumeristic Christianity rather than being the renegade God has called us to be. P.S. Good thoughts Wally!! Truly numerical growth without transformational growth means nothing & actually might just make the problem worse because it fools us into thinking something is really happening when it actually isn't.

Exactly Craig! We can easily understand this with parenting, but we so often don't understand this when it comes to our own or others' spiritual maturity. Self-feeding and personal responsibility need to be owned by those who are following Jesus. We need to help "feed" those who are young in faith, but we're often still feeding "teens" and "adults" as their only source of spiritual food.

Tosin, Thanks! We are all one bad decision away from destroying our ministry. And Satan would rejoice. I have to always remind myself of that. I want to lean so heavily into Jesus that Satan has nothing to work with in my life.

Thanks David. And who we are will affect what we do & how we do it. Good thoughts. I'll check out your blog.

Rich, I think I saw that poverty level is about $27,000 for a family of 5. You're right, expenses tend to be greater, so we feel the pinch. So true about living generously!! Vince said something about how we have it backwards - if it's God's money, we shouldn't figure out how much we can give God - like "I think I can afford to give 3%", but instead we should say - "it's all God's. So, how much do I need to live on? Then the rest is God's." Wow.

Lisa, thanks for your thoughts! And our focus SHOULD be on HIM! That's great!! But, I also think that if our focus is truly on Him, then it will also be turned towards the people He loves too. If we love God, we will love others. If we love God, we'll serve others. If we love God, we'll put others interests above our own. That's easier said than done - we're by nature selfish people. But, that's our call.

Thanks for the comments. We truly believe this series will be impactful for people - BUT - our 5 pm gathering is on SUNDAY nights, not Saturday nights. Sorry! I would hate to have you show up on Saturday, and no one be there. Hope the Sun. night time might be able to work!!

he's not kidding. He seriously will be hurt, and then the whole staff meeting on Monday will be trying to console Matt - so please, please, please don't do that to the rest of our staff. It's not pretty!
