Every so often Mother Nature shows us she is definitely in charge of the weather, not the golfers, gardeners or the returning snow birds. Sometimes we must look on with patience and hope she changes her mind...quickly. Patience has paid off this week for those with waxed skis and a full back pack. The Easter storm dropped a few nice... Guest Opinion: Priest Lake presents a great state vs. federal basis for a public lands study. IdahoStatesman.com BY JOE HINSON April 8, 2015 Somewhere within the debate over who can best manage public lands — the federal government or the states — is a tacit assumption that state lands, because they are managed to produce revenue, must therefore fail to... At this moment very little can be called a “firm plan of action”. In the search for available monies for such things as realigning the channel or repairing breakwater breaches we need to know what funds are available. Paperwork is in process, for example, for dredging. With approval we can then start gathering estimates based upon elements of the approval. And, of course, there will need to be considerations involved with Fish and Game as well as the Forest Service and others. There is a general feeling in the Breakwater Committee that the approach will be a combination of both repair and dredging simultaneously. It is too bad, but the entire "Save The Thorofare" project hinges on finding the money. The Bonner County Waterways committee and Commissioner Kelly were impressed that we have garnered strong community support and we thank you for that. Keep the word out ( as well as your checkbook) because when state and county entities see us working hard at the local level it will inspire them to give us a helping hand . Continue reading
