I saw the trailer the other day (Battle Room? Cool. The rest? Typical CGI fare) and immediately thought about Card; there are a whole lot of people who believe that he wrote the Ender book as a means of dealing with his own closeted self and accompanying self-loathing (Ender destroying the "Buggers" and then trying to redeem himself being a key piece of evidence). For what it's worth, the rest of his books are really, really bad.
The End of Ender's Game (At Least, For Me)
I find myself in a bit of a dilemma today. When I was around 15 or so, I read Orson Scott Card’s masterpiece science fiction novel Ender’s Game. Being a big ol’ sci fi geek from way back, I was predisposed to loving the story of a young boy on a future Earth, recruited by the military to l...

Eisenhower warned us of the Military-Colored Pencil Industrial Complex. Did we listen? No. No we did not.
(Also, I can totally see Werner Herzog providing the narration, something about Man's futile efforts to stem the tide of entropy.)
Where the Parent Blogosphere Should Be Directing Its Rage
How can we talk about who's facebook pictures are sexist, which mainstream media outlet is dissing bloggers, or which bloggers' marriages are ending, when we are being robbed blind by an arts and crafts industry that has no concern for our families?
Playing Hurt
We'd run through our warmup drills and now it was time to beat the shit out of each other: scrum practice. Josh was running things tonight; he pointed at me. "Jay - flanker, blindside." I nodded. He saw vacancy in... Continue reading

Sorry. We need Canadians. Please clean out your desk. Security will escort you from the building.
(The Snake Plissken of dadbloggers...well, that explains all of those random people telling me they heard I was dead.)
The One Where the New Guy Wasn't Funny or Even Very Interesting
DadCentric. Dad by gum Centric. Dad mudda fuggin Centric? How did I get in here? More to the point: How did I get in here? Well, I'll tell you. It started in a bar. (I've read through almost every post on this site, and 67 percent of them start or end in a bar. Perfect.) This particular bar wa...
My mom hails from Quincy (QUINZEE!) Mass., so my fixation on the horrific events that unfolded last week is partially due to genetics - I have fond memories of Boston from days spent there as a kid with my grandparents. This was a cathartic read.
By Such Swift Currents
"It's like fireworks," she said. A bright, sharp pop and crackle echoed through the night. Then another, and another. Her eyes, her sister's eyes, broad and open and wholly focused on the screen, waiting for the burst of glittering, shimmering lights that seven years had taught them always accom...

A Good Boy
I took a deep breath and began. "Mom and I went to the Encinitas shelter - it was a Super Bowl Sunday, and we were having people over to watch the game, and we really weren't going to get a dog, we were just going to stop in for a look. We walked around for a bit, and one of them - he was Duke t...

Craig was busy writing his own post about his Dad 2.0 experience. He absolutely nails the whole Brand Thing here:

So. Dad 2.0. We came, we saw, we made asses of ourselves (at least I did) on the karaoke floor. But what did we think of Dad 2.0.2? As before, I asked the fellows for their thoughts on the conference, via the magic of Electronic Mail. - Jason Whit: I thought Dad 2.0 was much improved in places t...
Trying to envision you singing karaoke...nope. You possess a dignity that I lack.
