I thought your analogies were great (and I am a practicing physicist who has taught university quantum mechanics). I just wanted to add a recommendation for a book. It's getting a little old, but the attitude and insights on perspective are unchanged: Isaac Asimov's "A View from a Height."
You just keep on trying, until you run out of cake.
Yesterday, I wrote: Well, the power just went out, so it's time for me to pack up my Mac and head out to a cafe with WiFi where I can work on my novel in front of people and get this posted. The weird thing is, while it's likely going to take an hour at least from the time I finish writing this...
Yeah, and Spock prime would totally drive a Tesla.
this is the coolest picture you'll see all day
Well it's been a wonderfully busy week, and now it's over. I finished Big Bang Theory on Tuesday, spent much of Wednesday wishing I was still working with them, and then recorded the voice of Mr. Qubit for the IRREDEEMABLE motion comic yesterday. Since I'm too busy to write up the stuff that nee...
Just read that you're going to be on The Big Bang Theory this fall. I'd say you get lucky sometimes! ;)
wil wheaton gets lucky ... sometimes
This was the ultimate highlight of my #PAX 2009, and watching it again just now brought tears to my eyes again. I'm not worthy of something this awesome. Thank you Jonathan, and Paul, and Storm, and Molly for making me feel cool. I <3 you guys.
I do the same thing with "public" and "pubic".
whenever i type "lions," i have to make sure i haven't accidentally typed "loins"
A friend of mine showed me the most awesome picture of a little Voltron toy I think I've ever seen. It had lions for hands. This bounced around in my head for a moment, and I shared my great wisdom with Twitter, thusly: Voltron with Lions > Voltron with vehicles. THIS IS SCIENCE AND YOU CAN'T ...
Just checked back and saw the edit. Sending good mojo your way. Take that, stupid Murphy and his stupid Law.
stupid murphy's law can bite me.
My plans to spend last night with the Basic D&D Dungeon Master's Booklet were derailed when I got a late-afternoon phone call from my manager. "You have a pilot audition tomorrow," he said. "I'm sending you all the material right now." He described the show to me; it sounds very cool. He describ...
Aaron is a cool guy. I met him at DragonCon 2007, and said I had a friend who knew him. I didn't realize how well he knew him, because he pulled out his blackberry, called him up, and handed me the phone! Maybe it was a test? Probably not, because he was a really great guy to talk to. I told him I was sorry that [spoilery stuff from the end of season 3 removed for your sake Wil], and he told me it was going to be very cool.
well, at least i got a good story out of it...
My table in the vendor's room at the Phoenix Comicon was right next to Aaron Douglas. Aaron is a good friend, and he knows that I'm a huge fan of his show and admirer of his work. He also knows that I'm way behind on BSG (near the end of season 3) so he's made this heroic effort to protect me fr...
That's the standard shirt.woot way of doing things. They sell a special item for $10 until it's sold out or until the day is over (whichever comes first), then offer it for $15 after that, until it's popularity falls out of the top 20. Every shirt is offered the same way. $15 for a shirt is not much. Sure, $10 would be better, but "the early bird gets the worm" etc etc.
my design is available at shirt.woot!
So if you ever wanted to get a geeky shirt I designed for shirt.woot, now's your chance. I wanted to call it Critical Mass, because I thought that would be cool and work on a few geeky levels, but I think that idea fell through a hole in the 'tubes. I chose a d6 instead of a d10 because I thou...
I'm still reading WATCHMEN, but my pace seems to be accelerating. Very jealous of your MTV gig. Congratulations, and enjoy the dream!
i'm not going to lie to you: there's a lot of awesome packed into this post
Hi there, I'm Wil, and I'm the luckiest guy in the world. Why is that? Well, allow me to present the following items to support this outrageous claim: Quite some time ago, I engaged in correspondence with one of the guys who makes woot go. One thing lead to another, and I ended up designing a T-...
I met Will Atherton, who played the evil professor in Real Genius, back at Dragon*Con 2007. I told him I was a physics professor, and his agent/handler said, "Please don't tell me that the popcorn thing wouldn't work!" He was a nice guy, and he seemed a little surprised about how much a physicist would enjoy that movie. Between Real Genius, Ferris Bueller, and Better Off Dead, I had all the nerdy one-liners I needed for a long time.
twitter funtimes
I don't think you need a lot of context from me to set this up, so I'll just say that this happened last night on Twitter: Me: @BrentSpiner: Just watched you on Leverage - You ROCKED. You were such an awesome dirtbag, and I know a thing or two about playing dirtbags. Brent: @wilw Thanks Wil. I...
You might think it sounds like a "yeah. duh" thing, but I've noticed in life that the "yeah, duh" things are often the things I screw up the most. It's good to hear these things over and over so that they become part of your basic knowledge, accessible without having to think too hard about it. I also think this advice applies to a lot of other situations, like job interviews or public speaking. You've got to have a good time to do it right.
wil's fundamental rule for successful auditions (or, how not to go crazy in a crazy business)
I'm proofing the edit that Andrew and I have been working on, and something jumped out at me just now that I thought was worth excerpting here, for my fellow actors. I guess you could call it my fundamental rule for successful auditions: I believe that actors have to find a way to enjoy themsel...
Totally understood- totally not being a dick. I like following your tweets because they are funny, sometimes clever even, and link to things I often find funny, clever, and nerdalicious.
what to expect if you follow me on twitter (or: how I'm going to disappoint you in 6 quick steps)
Yesterday, my friend Alan tweeted a link to this story of how Twitter was born. If you use Twitter at all, you should totally check it out because it's awesome. If you don't use Twitter, you should totally check it out, because a lot of what you may have heard about Twitter is probably filtered ...
OK- I will be the first to admit that I am only NOW reading Watchmen. I bought the bound version a few weeks ago and just started picking it up 2 days ago. So far, it's great. I can't believe how long it took me to notice details like how the pattern on Rorschach's mask changes from panel to panel.
we are all of us living in the shadow of manhattan
Um. Wow. Even if you're not counting down the minutes until Watchmen comes out, if you are of a certain age, this is pretty much a perfect recreation of the time it's supposed to be, well, recreating. My nostalgia centers are currently well above the flood stage, and it's not just because o...
Wow- I didn't always love Wesley, but I do always look forward to all the new stuff you do.
A friend of mine uses "Urge to kill rising..." so often that I can't imagine not understanding that reference.
unintended consequences
Last night, I saw a column at Newsarama that infuriated me. It's been taken offline, so I can't quote it, but the basic premise was that Wesley Crusher was playing Ted Kord, so Ted Kord was a Redshirt, because Wesley was a Redshirt, so now you know how lame that episode is going to be ha ha ha. ...
Looks like a cut-away from Family Guy to me... "Hey Lois, remember when Gary Coleman and I watched Akira on the Disney channel last week?"
presented without comment
Update: there seems to be something in the embedded video that tripped a lot of malware/virus/something bad's happening scanners, so I've removed the embed. If you still want to see it, you can watch this lovely satire at YouTube. (via reddit)

Hope it works out, Wil. Maybe they've seen your NUM3ERS and Criminal Minds work and are re-thinking. Besides, a "cameo" doesn't sound like a part you'd need to audition for, does it? (I really don't know- not in the field.)
In which wil goes "O_o" but retains his grip on reality
I thought I'd completed this week's LA Daily column on Friday, but when I opened it up yesterday afternoon to give it one final look, I realized that it didn't work at all. It's fine for a blog post (and will likely show up here sooner or later) but it just doesn't work as a column. As you can i...

Looks more like a screen grab from "Love, Actually" where he's dancing around #10 Downing St.
It must be my frakked up eyes, but the first time I saw this image, I thought it was Michael J. Fox!
i believe "FTW" is the phrase i'm looking for

I've re-watched Obama's acceptance speech a few times now. I can't remember the last time I've wanted to watch ANYTHING POLITICAL more than once! :)
four things
Four things this morning: This toaster gives new meaning to Dark Side. Newsweek is running a series called the Special Election Project. They had reporters inside both campaigns, with incredible access to candidates and staff, with the understanding that the story wouldn't be written until afte...

My bad. I see my comments now.

My plan to be Doctor Horrible for Halloween was disrupted when I couldn't find the appropriate lab coat and goggles anywhere. Luckily, I had a much more disturbing Plan B.
