Our friend Amy had a great suggestion: "Excellent idea to have the dog carry his/her own gear whenever possible. Be sure to take the dog on walks with the bag regularly... empty at first and then gradually add more weight. I've read that a healthy normal dog can safely carry up to 1/3 their body weight... though many stick to about 25% for comfort unless they are larger dogs and more experienced with carrying their packs. Now... if I could just get my cat to wear a pack...."
