Thank you for sharing this moment with us.
Though I hadn't seen him in over twenty years, I knew I'd miss him forever
I stood in the lobby of the Falcon Theater in Toluca Lake, and looked at Twitter while I waited for the rest of the guys to arrive. The walls were covered with posters from productions like CHiPs: The Musical and It's A Stevie Wonderful Life. Being in a theater during the day, when it's just a b...
Well, hello, Wheaton family! I am very happy to finally "meet" your sons after all these years. Thank you for sharing that with us.
In which I am a proud father
"I have to tell you," Jonathan Coulton's wife said to me on the last night of the cruise, "how wonderful your boys are." "I have two daughters," Peter Sagal's wife told Anne, "and I hope this isn't weird or creepy, but I really hope they meet guys like your sons." "Dude, you know you raised your...
Happy Birthday!!!
It's my birthday!
And I am having the best birthday, ever! Thank you to everyone who has wished me happy birthday on the Twitters, and if July 29th is your birthday too, happy birthday to you! (Image by Chuck Gamble, found at WIRED's GeekDad blog.)
W00t! Awesome news about season 4. I was just recently thinking that I was going through Guild withdrawal. Good to know that I can get my fix of Season 3 AND look forward to season 4.
Radio Free Burrito: Episode Twenty-Eight
Holy Crap, it's time for a new episode of Radio Free Burrito! Has it really been three weeks since the last show? I guess it has. Well, I brought a note that will hopefully excuse my absence... Show Notes: The logo was designed by WWdN:iX reader Marc, who asked that I not link to his "in progr...
Awesome! Congrats on finishing your speech!
As a side note, I thought the WW_AHs were a funky way of writing out the sound effect that you hear in cartoons when a bad joke is told: "Wah, wah, wah, waahhhh"
In which I finally finish writing my PAX East keynote
The last two months have featured sleepless nights, 10-hour work days, and constant battles with the voices of Self Doubt, You Suck, Why Did You Agree To Do This, You're Boring me Zoidberg, and They're All Going To Laugh At You. But a little earlier, when I finally got to turn this: into thi...
Awesome.
Hope you feel better soon!
in which a proclamation is made
I seem to have come down with some kind of post-PAX flu. It's not the Swine Flu, but I am coughing so much even I have grown tired of saying "my god, it's full of stars." I can't really focus long enough to write the PAX post I want to write (it's at about 30% completion, I guess) so please allo...
Hee! That's great! Like the person a few posts up said, it looks like one of those books where you can combine different heads with different bodies and feet. Now all you need is a picture with duck feet or something at the bottom.
a happy accident
A few months ago, a casting director needed to get a picture of me with my luxurious beard. Since I haven't had any headshots taken since I grew this magnificent beard, my son and I took my camera out onto the patio so he could take a quick picture that would be good enough for e-mailing on ...
Love the concept and the nod to the, um, Space Jellyfish Aliens. Not my thing, aesthetic-wise, but I'm sure as hell going to be buying one!
This is the cover for Memories of the Future, Volume One
This is the cover for Memories of the Future, Volume One. I looked at a bunch of different designs (and at least one of them may be a variant cover at some point) but when I saw the comp that ended up leading to this cover, I knew that this was the one I'd want to use, because I just love 195...
As far as I'm concerned, pets are adopted children and losing them is no less painful than losing a human child. I never knew Ferris in person, but she was a familiar part of this "family" in your little corner of cyberspace, and let's just say that I need to replace my tissue box after reading your last two posts.
I will give you a virtual *hug* and know that I hugged my own furbabies extra long today.
i can't think of a title, so i'll just say thank you
I once had a terrible case of the flu. In addition to the body aches and chills and stuff, I was puking my brains out all over the place all the time. The worst part of it was that it would happen with no warning; one second I was fine, and then I'd suddenly feel my stomach turn, and I'd be thro...
Wil, I am so sorry. Ferris was truly an awesome dog. I always loved reading about those little moments you shared with her. My sympathies go out to you and your family.
through the fish-eyed lens of tear stained eyes
My dog Ferris, who was rescued from a bus stop in Monrovia by my wife Anne almost exactly 8 years ago, had a heart attack and died this morning. It happened very quickly, and I was with her, which is supposed to make me feel better, but at this moment all I can feel is nearly-unbearable sorrow, ...
I remember thinking that maybe, in those boxes, was a letter from a girl who might want to go to the movies with me.
Dude! If I'd known that, I would have written you that fan letter that I never worked up the courage to write. It's just that you were SO much older than I was...by a whole 2 years!
In all seriousness, though, this has to be one of my favorite posts of yours, ever. When I get nostalgic over my childhood memories of the 80s, you are always there because of your work in two of the shows/movies that defined important moments in my life. It's strange, yet really cool, to be able to share in your nostalgia of the same things. I miss River Phoenix and all of his art that he never had the chance to share with us. But it's really nice to see the rest of you have found your own stride in your own ways.
Thank you for giving us our own "Stand By Me" experience through your blog. What you do has always brought me happiness. I'm glad you were a part of my childhood and adolescence, and I'm even more glad that Wil the writer (as well as the many other things you do) is a part of my adulthood.
i never did national network tv interviews later on in life like the ones i did when i was twelve
When we filmed Stand By Me, none of us knew it was going to be the huge success that it became. None of us expected it to be part of that 50s revival that was so much fun in the mid-80s, and none of us knew that it would essentially launch all of our acting careers. But I think that, if you aske...
AWESOME!!!
(And "awesome" is, like, even better than "hawsome" because it's retro-hawsome)
Happy Birthday, Anne!
I just wanted to say that I'm a nerd, and I'm here tonight to stand up for the rights of other nerds.
"Hi, Gilbert. I'm a nerd too. I just found that out tonight. We have news for the beautiful people. There's a lot more of us then there are of you. I know there's alumni here tonight. When you went to Adams you might've been called a spazz, or a dork, or a geek. Any of you that have ever fel...
My inner fangirl is squealing over that picture. You, Felicia Day, Neil Gaiman, and AFP!! Awesome! Thanks for sharing that.
And thanks for sharing your Comic Con story. For those of us who can't get away to be there, it's great to hear all the little behind-the-scenes stories. What an amazing feeling it must have been to get that kind of reception, and I wish I had been there to see it.
And speaking of Neil Gaiman and AFP, one of my favorite perfume oil companies, Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab (http://www.blackphoenixalchemylab.com) has been working with them to raise money for the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund by putting out scents inspired by the characters in Gaiman's works. Soon they'll be releasing a line of scents corresponding to AFP's new book, "Who Killed Amanda Palmer?" I mean, who wouldn't want scents called, "Cupcake Splatter Pattern Analysis" and "Unfortunate Shopping Cart Incident." I know that perfume oils sound like more of a "female thing," but they have many masculine/unisex scents, too, and it's just fun to check out for the creativity.
the obligatory comic-con post (that's mostly about the guild panel)
I didn't see enough of Comic-Con to give a comprehensive report. What I experienced was a miserably hot and insanely crowded main vendor floor that was more difficult to navigate than I ever remember it being before – especially on Friday. My highlights were visiting with the friends I could ge...
Happy Birthday, Wil!
ah, to be young again, and also a robot
I'm 37! I'm not old. Also: Happy birthday to me!
My most embarrassing moment with a celebrity was when I was working in the store Hold Everything, back in '91 or so. I had a guy walk in with a HUGE bag of VHS movies. I answered questions about some of our products, and he ended up buying a remote control organizer. As I was ringing him up, I was chit-chatting with him and commenting on all the movies he had and how he must be a movie lover. He responded that he was writing a screenplay and the movies were for his research. Naive as I was, I started blabbing about how I had some friends who were trying to be screenwriters, how hard it was to make it in The Business, and I wished him lots of luck on his screenplay. Then he handed me his credit card. It was Wes Craven. As my face turned a deep crimson color, I think I muttered something like, "Well...guess you don't really need my luck." He was amused.
(I'm not 100% sure, but I think I remember seeing some horror movie titles in the stash o' videos he had, so I'm thinking the screenplay for which he was doing research was "Scream")
from the vault: someone in tennessee loves me
Digging into the vault is fun. When I was in my very early 20s, this girl who I dated and I played this celebrity lookalike game. Whenever we saw someone who looked like a celebrity, one of us would say, "Hey, there's Nell Carter" or "Don't look now, but Kirk Cameron is shopping in Target." One ...
R.I.P. Freddy Snowpants :(. I'm so sorry for the loss of your family's loved one. I just got back from the vet's just a few minutes ago, and I am still in a daze from the news that they found "a mass" in my cat's lungs. So I think the phrase, "I feel your pain," is appropriate here.
RIP Freddy Snowpants
My brother had one of the coolest cats in the world. We called him Freddy Snowpants, because he had furry fat hind legs that looked like he was wearing snowpants when he walked. One of my favorite things to do was stand behind him and make the "zip zip zip" noise, which always resulted in much m...
Great interview, and good answers to the questions (especially the physics question and the "book to the head" thing). Teeth shmeeth. With a great smile like that, you should just smile more.
hey, look, that's me!
I was really happy with my appearance on KTLA morning news earlier this week, even if the HD really showed off just how profoundly fucked up my teeth really are. If you have a minute and want to see me talking about books and technology and geek stuff, you can watch it at the LA Times Jacket Cop...
That was AWESOME, Wil! You got some great rocker moves there!
it doesn't make a difference if we look cool or not...
After playing Rock Band 2 for 2 straight hours and struggling though some songs I've never played before, I was worried that when the videos started making their way online, I'd look like an asshole who didn't know how to play fake instruments, and that everyone would laugh at me. But when I...
Britney Spears fans know how to use computers? ;)
C'mon, Wil. You know you want to win this. Have faith in your posse.
i just bought my first fark headline t-shirt
I know, I know, it's so very wrong. But that's precisely why it's so right!
w00t! Can't wait!
audio version of the happiest days of our lives available at noon pacific on december 20.
UPDATED: Everything you ever wanted to know about the audio version of The Happiest Days of Our Lives but were afraid to ask can be found right here. The audio version of The Happiest Days of Our Lives will go on sale at noon Pacific tomorrow! I will post all the exciting details, as well as a p...
So all of this is entirely over my head, not having played D&D before (*ducks rotten tomatoes*), but a huge congrats to you . I know enough to know that this is a big deal. And I can't wait to hear about the other projects in the works.
at last, it can be revealed . . .
So this is why I got to spend the entire weekend making a D&D 4E character without feeling guilty about it at all: For those of you who enjoyed the D&D Podcasts, we're recording another session on Thursday. Jim Darkmagic (of the New Hampshire Darkmagics), Binwin Bronzebottom, and Omin Dran of A...
Wil, this is your art, and I KNOW you wouldn't put something like this out without thinking (and overthinking, I'm sure) about whether this would provide your fans with something new and special. I trust you, and when you say it'll be worth it, I know it will be. Even though I've got the paperback and one of the 300 (w00t! #21 in da house! -- sorry I never took the opportunity to w00t about my 300 status), I will proudly add the new edition to my collection. Reading the new stuff will be the icing on the cake, but really I do this because I want to support one of my favorite artists.
And Andrew, see if you can talk Wil into calling it "Happiester Days of Our Lives." That would be kinda awesome, especially if it was done so that the title has a hand-written "er" added to the end of "Happiest." In crayon, of course.
Subterranean Press to release special edition of Happiest Days of Our Lives
Shortly after I published The Happiest Days of Our Lives , Bill Schafer, who is the publisher and owner of Subterranean Press, contacted me about doing a special limited edition. I discovered Subterranean Press when they published John Scalzi's Questions for a Soldier, and I fell in love with th...
Already sent in my absentee for Obama.
stay on target
YES! Oh how I miss that intro. I got that same feeling of being a 6-year-old waiting for the special presentation when I saw that.
And speaking of special presentations, I LOVED your Criminal Minds episode! AWESOME performance. I didn't see a reminder here, so maybe it hasn't aired in the U.S. yet?
so fucking special
I hope this makes my fellow Gen Xers as happy as it made me. Damn kids today: When we saw this during October, it usually meant that something wonderful, like a It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown was about to start. When we saw it in December, it usually meant a Rankin/Bass special was ab...
"Aliens" quotes FTW!
Sorry you're not feeling well. Hopefully this one-two medication punch will make you feel mostly like yourself again...
...mostly.
it's the only way to be sure
So it turns out that I do, in fact, have a sinus infection. Because it's the first one post-sinus surgery, my doctor decided that the best course of action would be to blast off and nuke the site from orbit. I asked him if maybe we could do something a little less extreme, but he assured me that...
