Another perspective of the East Nassau Temple and Hebrew Congregation
I have driven by this temple on many occasions and wondered what the status was/is for this temple and property. It seems odd that any Jewish temple, such as this one, could ever be left in such a state of abandonment and lack of attention, especially since it is situated in such a wealthy, Long Island community of Syosset, NY. My first reaction upon discovering this property was... What happened to this congregation and where are they now? (including the Rabbi, board members and trustees, the families and children of the congregation, et. al.)
Also, just a stone's throw away to the South of this building, is the Middway Jewish Center, and I was tempted to inquire about the status of the ENHC over there. Yet, now that I have discovered this article, even more questions arise.
On the front side of this property, a billboard of sorts lists the Rabbi as being Jonathan Sacks with a phone number contact, along with hours of services, etc. However, there was no mention of a Jonathan Sacks in this article.
Another question: Is any Jewish temple considered to be holy or sacred in itself? Or, is it just considered to be holy ground, only if and as long it is still active as a temple AND congregation?
The reason why I wonder about that is that on the west side of this building are two concrete slabs (alike the tablet shaped windows we see pictured above) and these slabs are engraved with Hebrew, most likely an indication of the ten commandments, which is considered to be a holy sacrament of the Jewish faith. And so, I wondered what would ever happen if the property was purchased and these tablets were to be condemned or destroyed. To me, that would be like destroying the holiest of words from Hashem.
Perhaps this was not such a wise place to construct a temple of this sort, being that South Oyster Bay Road is quite a busy thorough fare. The parking lot for the temple is located in the back along Berkley Lane and Avon Court. Right now, the gates are locked and one can see some signs of property neglect.
I agree with the comment that this temple could have some constructive use for the Jewish community if the same would take some interest in that. I also agree that it would be a shame (if not, sin) to close down a shul after being active for so many years. To me, this is more than just an issue of dollars and cents, yet rather, tradition, our Jewish and Hebrew legacy here on Long Island, and for all Jews who reside within this community.
Let's not have another, "Failed as a temple" fall prey to the wrecking ball.
Is Chabad Trying to Steal This Synagogue?
The synagogue's rabbi says yes. Past Chabad behavior says yes. Attorney (and child advocate) Elliot Pasik says no – but he says it in a way that calls his own behavior into question. Court To Weigh Sale Of Syosset Shul Stuart Ain, The NY Jewish Week The long-running saga over the fate of the ...
