(Web?) Designers have a whole manifesto or something about this kinda crap, and they get fighting mad when other designers take shit jobs for shit pay because it devalues the whole job market. It's unfortunate writers can't do that, too, but I kinda think the design industry benefits from having a lot more money to go around, and probably fewer people trying to get a piece of the pie. I know plenty of people doing web design for close to or above 6 figures a year, but I can count the people who're able to make a living writing on one hand, and none of them are even close to that.
Is It Too Late to Write This Wrong? The Story of My Struggle, Frustration, and Desire to Get Paid More Than $10/Hour to Do What I Love.
The following is an email I wrote in response to a job offer from a company that, after receiving my resume and cover letter, asked me to complete a three-hour (timed) edit test. After they received my edit test, I was immediately (within the hour) offered a part-time freelance position: five co...
I've always wondered how they handle the liability for this, and if you think this is bad I can't even imagine how that car rental airbnb clone start-up is gonna pull off liability issues.
High flying Airbnb's reputation may be tarnished if it doesn't respond quickly to this horrific story.
Which is all super great. But now the story of a trusting Airbnb user who’s had her home sacked (it’s the only way to describe it) is starting to spread. Airbnb’s response so far has been tepid at best. It turns out that when something like this happens, Airbnb isn’t financially responsible. The...
I'm glad you're okay. I saw tweets referring to the accident a few days back, but I had no idea you'd actually been hit. I hope the bike's salvageable, by the way. It looks like a really nice piece of work :(
The Bicycle Diaries: When good things go wrong and then a stranger gives you strawberries.
When I was a kid, I got a blue ten-speed for my birthday. Owning a bicycle was a requirement in my family since we seriously did things on the weekend like mandatory family bike rides across the Golden Gate Bridge to get ice cream in Sausalito (It sounds far more well-adjusted than it was; I pro...
I've almost been doored going full-speed down Potrero, but I haven't actually been hit by a car yet. Anyway, everyone's got their awkward bike rite-of-passage stories and here is mine:
I was a block or so north of Chinatown, around noon on a week day, going down a small downhill onto Kearny. I hit a stop light and, for whatever reason, I began grossly over-thinking the stop-at-the-intersection process. Basically, I'm a huge idiot, and I went in with the very firm, deliberate intention of trying to stop, pull my left foot out of the toe cage and lean on it while I waited for the light. Instead, I pulled my *right* foot out of the toe cage, leaving my left foot in, and continued on my left-and-downward course with nothing to stop me but my ass. It was embarrassing, but itw as ultimately made amusing by the fact that, as I fell, my front tire grazed some woman's leg, and as I sat there on the pavement wondering where I'd dropped my dignity, she just stood there and stared at me like I was the world's biggest asshole.

I feel bad saying it but please take the playoffs off Seattle's hands, they need to grow up and stop trying to piece together a winning season on the back of a shitty division and half-baked talent because all it does is put them in position to draft terribly and this is exactly how they sputtered through the 90s in total anonymity and aimless, fruitless futility.
Daisy Does the 49ers: London Victory, Playoff Possibilities - SFist
I’m pretty sure no one even cares about the 49ers right now, but due to the fact that I spent six straight hours at the Blackthorn Tavern watching football while you were out reveling in the gorgeous Halloween Sunday and getting fired up for the Giants, I’m going to write this post anyway. So...

Welcome to Seattle . . . Now please go away.
Peter Dunne, 42, searches Yahoo Personals for a potential boyfriend using the free Wi-Fi at University Zoka coffee shop. After living in San Francisco and Los Angeles, Dunne finds Seattle a social wasteland. “There's no sexual energy here at all,” he says. Seattle is “a city of the mind . . . a c...
