You're right--the Garden Tower reminds one of the brilliant African sack garden, though as far as I can tell the sack garden doesn't have anything like a vermicomposter tube. We just learned about the sack gardens last month at Will Allen's Growing Power workshop in Milwaukee. And yes, our name does lack zing.
