Editor's note: For our last week at Style Lush, I've asked the writers to share both a favorite post by another writer, from over the last three years, and a favorite post of their own. You'll see these posts linked to at the top of their new post for the week. Enjoy a stroll down Lush memory lane! By Rebecca Saying goodbye is hard. I will miss this site so much, and I will miss all of you - those who have read, those who have commented, and my fellow writers. Style Lush 4EVR! Before I go, though, my favorite... Continue reading

By Rebecca Living in a dry climate, it's always a challenge to keep my hands from cracking in the winter. Even though it's not terribly cold here, I wash my hands constantly to avoid all the germs and viruses that come home with my kids. I shake my fist at you, preschool! Because all this good hygiene can do a number on your hands. If you're starting out with cracked, red, peeling hands, then my triage approach is simple: just smear a thick layer of Aquaphor all over them every night until it improves. Usually this will only take a... Continue reading

By Rebecca I was perusing Anthropologie the other day because I have a gift card burning a hole in my pocket. I saw the Mesilla peasant blouse on display and went to try it on. Unfortunately, they didn't have my size, but it keeps popping into my head, so I thought I'd do some brainstorming. If left to my own devices, I would wear this with jeans and call it a day. But that mint accent color begs to be paired with something more fun. Do you think this would go with a pair of fuchsia pants? Or some cobalt... Continue reading

By Rebecca In my husband's family, we draw names for Christmas gifts. My sister-in-law drew my name this year, which is always fun because she manages to find things that I never knew I wanted, but end up among my favorite presents. This year was no different. I opened up my gift from her and found two awesome things. First, this Luxe Faux Fur Scarf from Restoration Hardware. I had never laid eyes on it before, but immediately fell in love with it. It's super soft and keeps your neck REALLY warm! I tested it out on a trip to... Continue reading

By Rebecca I have a few people in my life that are really difficult to buy for. (**cough cough MY HUSBAND**). Do you have people like this on your gift list? People that either have everything they need already, or who are prone to returning absolutely everything, EVEN if it's something they have specifically mentioned they might like? (No, I'm not bitter. OK yes I am.) Anyway, my fix for this is simple: don't buy them anything. I don't mean buy them nothing, I just mean don't buy them any STUFF. You see, this person likely already has enough stuff.... Continue reading

By Rebecca My own kids are 7 and 4, and while I love finding the perfect Lego set and My Little Pony toys for them, I have to admit that I reeeeeeeally miss buying baby stuff. And since my sister went ahead and did me the supreme favor of having a baby five months ago, I got the chance to do just that. Itch: scratched! So, here's what I'm getting for the baby in our family this year. 1) The cutest Robeez shoes ever. Do babies need shoes? Of course they don't! But you are made of stone if you... Continue reading

By Rebecca Does this ever happen to you: you start your holiday shopping, and in the process, you uncover far too many gifts that you suddenly start craving for yourself? I know, I know, the holidays aren't all about presents blah di blah, but just sayin', if any of these happened to magically fall into my stocking I wouldn't cry. OK? (Dear family, please be reading this.) My love of lip products is well documented on this site. As Chandler Bing would say, could this Sephora Give Me Some Lip sampler pack BE any more perfect for me? You guys,... Continue reading

By Rebecca Now that Thanksgiving is over, I immediately start turning my attention to holiday planning and shopping. Honestly, though, I can't remember the last time I went to an actual store for Christmas gifts. I typically shop online exclusively. I especially enjoy online shopping from the comfort of my couch, and tend to avoid Target and all malls for several days beyond Thanksgiving! In fact, I have not given myself mental permission to go back to Target yet, five days later. By all accounts, Cyber Monday spending is growing by leaps and bounds each year, so obviously I'm not... By Rebecca I just flew back from New Orleans (and boy are my arms tired) for The Blathering, and there is so much to see and do there. What an amazing city full of history. Wandering around taking in different parts of the city was a huge highlight for me. On Saturday afternoon, we hopped in a cab to Magazine Street, which is a long street with an eclectic mix of stores and homes. We wandered around, stopped in at Sucre for chocolate and macarons, poked our heads into antique stores and some beautiful kids' and baby stores. While there... Continue reading

By Rebecca I know we are just getting into fall here, but I always love reading up on the color trends and projections when they are released for future seasons. In September, Pantone announced that the top color for Spring 2013 is Monaco Blue. Behold: I am definitely on board with this color! I love blue in general, and this is a gorgeous hybrid of cobalt and navy. In fact, I recently picked up a nail polish color that is almost exactly this color! I also think a silk blouse in Monaco Blue would be absolutely beautiful. Or a pair... Continue reading

By Rebecca I used to have a leather jacket that I wore everywhere. It was made of intentionally wrinkly brown leather, it was cropped and it had large shoulder pads. It was also double-breasted. The year was 1988. (Seriously, if we can't make fun of our sartorial choices from 1988, what CAN we make fun of? But if you are reading this and you were not yet BORN in 1988, I don't want to hear about it. Well, actually I do, because your mom probably has some pretty awesome pictures to show you.) Anyway, let's fast-forward to the present day,... Continue reading

By Rebecca All of a sudden it is no longer 90 degrees outside, so obviously I've started plotting out my sweater- and scarf-wearing ways for the winter. As a Californian, our winter is really "winter," which probably makes me love fall and winter clothing all the more because it's mostly decorative! In fact, I am a serial scarf-buyer. I think one reason why scarves appeal to me so much is that they make it very easy to accessorize. I wear mostly simple clothes, so when you find a scarf that is easy to throw on with a cardigan and jeans... Continue reading

By Rebecca My birthday was yesterday, and I was the lucky recipient of a few gift cards, one of them a biggish amount from Nordstrom. Usually, gift cards burn a hole in my pocket and I can never hold onto them for long. But this time, I want to be careful with my splurge! Should I buy something that I wouldn't normally buy for myself? Should I put it toward something that's a REAL splurge? I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO! I started looking around a little, and found a few things that I like. (I mean, it's Nordstrom, I... Continue reading

By Rebecca I love houseplants. I love that they help provide cleaner air, I love how they can soften the edges of a room, and I just plain love how they look. I don't have an extremely green thumb (I cannot keep an orchid alive to save my life), but I have found a few green plants that I have successfully kept alive and looking good! Here are my top three easy-to-care-for houseplants. If you want to see some others, Better Homes & Gardens has a great list as well. First up, the Pothos. A timeless classic. Growing up, my... By Rebecca As a confirmed lip glossophile, it's been awhile since I did a good old-fashioned lip gloss review. Let's remedy that, shall we? Because I happened to be in Sephora the other day and found a pretty awesome one to splurge on, if you happen to be of a mind to do so. It's Laura Mercier Lip Glace, and it is glorious. It is quite creamy and shiny, and has a scent that is a little...vanilla-ish? I bought the color Baby Doll, which is a silly name, but a really nice pink shiny gloss with some gold shimmer in... By Rebecca Not to be Debbie Downer, but I have been under a not-insignificant amount of work stress of late. Doesn't being a grown-up suck sometimes? Sigh. Anyway, I've been giving a lot of thought to how I personally deal with stress and wondering how others cope. Here are a few things that usually help me: Make lists. I usually feel stressed when I'm not completely in control of something in my life. Yes, I'm sure there is some analysis-worthy issue there, but setting that aside for the moment, making lists of the things I need to accomplish typically helps... Continue reading

By Rebecca I found this dress at Modcloth and I have fallen in love with it. It's the Blue and Me Forever Dress by BB Dakota. This dress also comes in a really pretty green color, as well as red and black. Something about this blue spoke to me, though. My first instinct is to wear it with brown boots and lots of gold jewelry. But what do YOU think? Would it be better with a statement necklace in a contrasting color with some delicate sandals? Or something that I haven't even thought of yet? I also wondered about what... Continue reading

By Rebecca Fall is here, so let's ignore the fact that it's still in the mid-90s here in California and focus on the clothes that I'd LIKE to be wearing rather than the shorts and tank tops that have grown quite tiresome. Seriously, what I wouldn't give to be able to throw on a scarf and a pair of boots! Anyway, the colorful jean trend doesn't look to be going anywhere, and the fall equivalent seems to be corduroy pants in fun colors. I approve! Here are a few great choices if you are digging this idea as much as... Continue reading

By Rebecca I am a lover of t-shirts: crewneck, v-neck, scoop neck, short-sleeve, long-sleeve... you name it, I don't discriminate. I wear t-shirts under cardigans or blazers all the time, but a plain t-shirt on its own doesn't feel very work-appropriate. However, the other day I was browsing my local Banana Republic and came across the mixed-media zip tee, and BINGO! A super cute AND work-apppriate shirt magically found its way into my wardrobe. This tee is made of rayon on the front, and t-shirt material on the back (business in the front, party in the back!). ((Sorry, couldn't resist.))... Continue reading

By Rebecca We start school here in a couple of weeks, and my second grader needs a new lunchbox. He's a huge Star Wars fan, so we've gone through two or three Star Wars-themed lunchboxes, but I'd love to get one that lasts longer than a fad that he might forget about halfway through the year. I recently heard about (and became intrigued by) the Packit lunchbox. You fold it down and freeze the whole thing, so you don't need to use ice packs. The website claims that it keeps things cold for up to 10 hours! If it's true,... Continue reading

By Rebecca I just had the kind of weekend that was so fun that when I came into work Monday morning I almost couldn't remember what I was working on when I left. It's almost the end of summer (sob) and it's been really hot here (high 90s), so we've been spending all our time at the beach, diving into the 70-degree ocean. And true to form, we went to the beach on Friday afternoon and Saturday. But on Sunday, we decided to try something different. We loaded up the kids, packed a cooler of snacks, covered ourselves in sunblock...... Continue reading

By Rebecca Typically, I am a diehard drugstore mascara user. There are just many other things I'd rather spend $25 on than mascara, especially when there are some pretty good ones out there. But recently I have fallen in deep, expensive love with a mascara: Bobbi Brown Intensifying Long-Wear. It was not love at first sight, though. The brush is very small, which initially annoyed me. It kind of took a long time to get all my eyelashes covered. But this stuff is amazing: it never smudges under your eyes, and when you want to take it off, it simply... Continue reading

By Rebecca Okay, y'all, I'm seeing something that I don't like out there, and I need to know if I'm being weird and crazy about it. It's the resurgence of chambray, folks. Work with me here. I may be a total hypocrite, since I love jeans and wear them all the time, and isn't a chambray shirt like jeans for your upper half? It seems like it should be, so why don't I like it? I mean, I am actually considering buying a denim jacket for the first time since 1996. Why am I so conflicted about a shirt-like version?... Continue reading

By Rebecca I love watches, and have amassed a small collection of them in various metals and sizes. However, I really wanted a watch with a leather band that wouldn't break the bank. Enter the Nordstrom anniversary sale, where I found the Timex Easy Reader Leather Strap Watch. (Yes, I know the phrase "Timex Easy Reader" reeeeeeeally sounds like code for "Grandma's watch." But this is not that at all!) This is a simple, oversized watch with a gunmetal-colored bezel and a distressed brown leather strap. It is simple and perfect and EXACTLY what I was looking for. And get... Continue reading

By Rebecca Until recently, I have been primarily a nude/pale pink nail polish type of gal. And I still am, to some degree—I love how chips don't show and I love that you look polished but not "out there." But lately, there's been an explosion of beautiful, colorful nail colors that I absolutely love for summertime. Here's one I can't get enough of: Ole Caliente by Essie. It's the most gorgeous orangey, pinky red. Exhibit A: And exhibit B, another Essie color called Go Overboard: Fantastic, right? But here's my dilemma. Is wearing these colors on my hands...professional? I feel... Continue reading
