It's not fucking trees. It's TREE BUKAKKE.
this is really gross. you have been warned.
There is a tree near my house, that has probably been there for years, just doing its tree thing, watching patiently as families come and go, empires rise and fall, and Isengard is flooded. I'm sure it's a beautiful tree, cheerfully trading carbon dioxide for oxygen, providing shade, and most li...
You have a yard! Grow your own hops! Then you can use it and be all THE GROUND HELPED US MAKE BEER!
Homebrewing geeks really are solid geeks, who are as nerdy in their pursuits as open source evangelists. For example, Sam C. who runs Dogfish Head -- he's got a beer cookbook out, iirc.
alas, I loathe beer (it's the taste of hops, really), so instead of homebrewing beer, I make strange tasty syrups to make teas and sodas out of.
In which my son and I make our own beer
Ryan is going to be 22 at the end of the month. For those of you who have been here since I wrote the 13 on 31 post, you now know how I feel every single day. The rest of you can get off my lawn before I call your parents. So the other day, he and I were having a beer together, and Ryan said, "W...
like humans, dogs are pack animals. and part of being a pack animal is taking care of other members of the pack.
GOOD RILEY.
i'm sorry your've been mostly alone with your grief.
in which some comfort is found
I saw Ferris' empty dish last night when I fed Riley, and it unleashed an agonizing wave of sadness so overwhelming, I dropped to the floor in our living room and cried as hard and as long as I ever have in my life. After she was finished eating, Riley came over to me and sniffed at my face. Th...
oh, i'm so very sorry.
that sucks.
through the fish-eyed lens of tear stained eyes
My dog Ferris, who was rescued from a bus stop in Monrovia by my wife Anne almost exactly 8 years ago, had a heart attack and died this morning. It happened very quickly, and I was with her, which is supposed to make me feel better, but at this moment all I can feel is nearly-unbearable sorrow, ...
GOOD FERRIS!
She looks like she needs to be scruffled behind the ears.
definitely.
from the vault: my awesome dog
When you break the world down into dog people and cat people, I guess I'm mostly a dog person, even though I've loved every cat I've ever owned. Sometimes, though, my dog tests me, like in this entry from the vault... When I was at CES [a few weeks ago] for InDigital, I got a phone call from Ann...
GAMING GEEK WIN.
one of the most awesome things i've ever autographed
When I was at the Phoenix Comicon, a girl came up to me on the first day and asked me if I'd sign this present she was making for her boyfriend: a papercraft d20. She was taking it around the con and getting a few people she thought he'd like to sign it for him, and I was on the list. I needed...
how about "wait wait don't tell me"?
i love that show so hard.
Podcasts I love: Driveway Moments
Is your brain embiggened from last time when we talked about 60-Second Science? Good, good. Glad to hear it. Take good care of your brain, and it'll take good care of you. Today, we're turning to one of my favorite old media broadcasters, who have done an outstanding job embracing new media: Nat...
eyebrows FTW.
i haven't even been awake for an hour, and it's already an awesome day
Two awesome things have already happened today: 1. I woke up at 8:05, and it felt like I'd really slept in. 2. My friend Rich put me in today's Diesel Sweeties: see more hipster robot webcomics and pixel t-shirts The theme I use in Typepad doesn't support dynamic resizing, so I had to shrink ...
see, now i'm tempted to reference you on twitter by a DIFFERENT character you played. but that's because i want to see more of WALTER on CSI. (totally one of the best homeless guy minor characters they've had. i could see walter becoming like a huggy bear "THE WORD ON THE STREET IS..." kind of guys. you all scruffed and skanked up chatting in the interview room with fishburn in his suit? aww yeah.)
i mean, i *won't* because 1. i'm not a dick (or at least not that kind of dick) and 2. probably too obscure and unfunny outside of my head.
um. yeah. clearly i need to get out more. or something.
maybe coffee will help.
what to expect if you follow me on twitter (or: how I'm going to disappoint you in 6 quick steps)
Yesterday, my friend Alan tweeted a link to this story of how Twitter was born. If you use Twitter at all, you should totally check it out because it's awesome. If you don't use Twitter, you should totally check it out, because a lot of what you may have heard about Twitter is probably filtered ...
fuckin awesome.
i remember reading it issue by issue and obsessing over it on rec.arts.comics as each issue came out.
my one gripe with the excellent trade paperback version is that it makes the layout of the 'fearful symmetry' issue less OMG shocking. (that's the issue that's completely mirrored in both page layout and content (either matching or contrasting) all the way through until the center where there's a splash page of action involving $SPOILER-CHARACTER)
i've heard about some of the changes they've made for the movie, but i think i'm mostly okay with them so far.
yet another awesome video for watchmen
They've done another video to promote Watchmen, this time made to look like a 16mm film made in 1977: If you're not familiar with Watchmen, I may need to explain — well, before I finish that, I will encourage you to buy Watchmen right now and go read it. I'm serious. Don't even eat or pe...
oh, i'm a big fan of pseudopod. good stuff.
Podcasts I love: Pseudopod
Here's something that you probably don't know about me: Ever since I was a kid listening to KROQ on my Walkman[1] I've wanted to have my own radio show. The idea of playing music for and talking to people across the airwaves remains a dream of mine, and it's why I occasionally do my own Radio Fr...

wait, what?
your daily dose of surreality
I have no idea what the hell is going on here, but I love it: (via Reddit)
that's pretty awesome right there.
for some reason, i was totally expecting that video to be this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wtOW1CxHvNY
also, you've seen pictures of VAMPIRE SQUID, right? (Vampyroteuthis infernalis, lit. "VAMPIRE SQUID FROM HELL", right there in the latin.)
i love everything about this
It's another one of those holy shit how am I going to get all this done? days, so please enjoy this video and song while I crush everything.
oh! *THAT* helmet hairdo. *fear*
honestly, scars would've been cooler.
i bet that even in the 24th century, chicks dig scars.
the great wheaton hockey scandal of 1991
My friends at CliqueClack did an interview with Dean Devlin, creator of the sensational new series Leverage. Dean and I played hockey on the same team (with, I've just now remembered, Adam Baldwin, also) from around 1989-1991. He was a forward and I was a goalie. One night in Burbank, our team g...
so, wait, you talk about a pre-helmet hairdo. does that mean you had to change your hairstyle due to the helmet incident? do tell!
i had a bunch of stitches up my forehead (nothing so exciting as a hockey game -- i just wiped out while bicycling around a corner and faceplanted), but the resulting scar is under my hair for most hairstyles i'd be willing to wear.

Apples to Apples for the absolute total win. love it love it love it.
a great guide to family board games
I love gaming. I love my family. Therefore, I love gaming with my family. The thing is, my kids aren't especially interested in a serious Battletech fight ("When do we get to fight each other?" "Just as soon as we finish building our Mechs." "But we've been doing that for an hour!" "I know! We h...

Thanks for this set of posts. I held off on reading them until we watched the episode last night on the tivo. Very interesting reading!
Also, you should totally change the picture of you here on the wwdnix page to be the one of you all made up in the bloodspatter makeup.
at least for halloween!
Criminal Minds: That's a Wrap!
This is the sixth and final post about working on episode four, Paradise, during season four of Criminal Minds. I spoke with CliqueClack.com about some of my production experiences, and I have a gallery of images from the shoot at Flickr. Please note that I've done my best to recreate my interac...

that's pretty cool.
also, it's nice to read about someone having a good time at poker -- i just came back from FARGO, and while the FARGO events were fun, the ring games with random folks kept touching me in my bathing suit places and not in that fun way which put me on a depressive tilt for the whole drive home.
i would totally play the wwdn tourneys again if you started having them, and i suspect claudia would as well.
this post has nothing to do with affleck, who was the bomb in phantoms
Warning: This post contains poker content, and is probably boring to 96% of people the people who will it. Saturday night, Anne and I went out to Santa Monica for the All-in for Scleroderma poker tournament. About 100 people played, and I made the final table with one big blind left, finishing i...

ZOMG, do you guys have a good TORRENT CLIENT? INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY LAWS SUCK AND ARE IMMORAL! ANYBODY WANT TO SWAP SOME MOVIES IN VIOLATION OF THE COPYRIGHT?

what? oh, not *that* kind of pirate?
i be a pensive pirate, me hearties
Yarr! It be 2008's Talk Like A Pirate Day, me Buckos! Shiver yer timbers when ye gaze 'pon me plastic pirate hat. It be small, but 'tis got an elastic strap and staples, to stay on in a stiff breeze. Now I'm set to wonderin' . . . what shall I plunder today?

wil -- ever played feng shui? it's incredibly fast and loose role playing where, basically, you're a character in an action movie. instead of character classes like "fighter" and "wizard", you've got "karate cop" and "techie" and such. it's basically a gaming system that doesn't let the game mechanics get in the way of a good story. and your character starts out already badassed, so you don't have to spend way too long casting magic missile against the darkness while you gain levels.

"This is a game that is fun. It helps you imagine." -Preface to the D&D Basic Rules Set, 1983 I'm following the "blog less while you're writing stories" rule, so I can stay on target and get this novella finished before Duke Nukem Forever ships. So, very briefly: Playing a tiny bit of D&D 4e at...
