As I read I found myself thinking, "Damn, I've been reading Wil for a loooong time" because I remember your pre-exile days. Your posts encouraged me to start my own blog. It took a few months to get the courage to start as well as to stop over-thinking it, but I've been blogging for over 7 years now. Thanks. :)
Treat her like a lady, and she'll always bring you home.
In 2001, blogs were very new things. In fact, as much more time was spent arguing talking about what blogs even were, and where they fit into the media landscape than was spent actually, you know, writing in them. In fact, I don't even think the word "blogging" existed back then, and whenever it...
Well, I wasn't named "Batman" but it was my first word. No doubt I have my brother* to thank for that since he used to run around singing the TV show's theme song all the time.
*Somehow I don't feel beholden to call him my 'big brother' while he prefers to call me his 'little sister.'
The Force Will Be With Him...
My nephew will be joining Team Humans sometime in July, so today we're having a baby shower for my little sister (who, at 33, isn't little, bit if you're a big brother or sister, you know what I mean.) My brother in law is awesome, even though he's Dallas Cowboys SuperFan Number One Top Guy Fore...
I'm reading Astonishing X-Men: Gifted right now. Seriously gorgeous art and Joss Whedon= Win.
I haven't read all that many comics/graphic novels but Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Season 8 and Ghost in the Shell pulled me in. I'm keeping an eye out for other things I might like.
The Five Fists of Science sounds great. I'll have to look for it.
ZAP! POW! OOFF! ZOK! BIFF! A post about comics and TPBs.
A couple times a year, I have to go through all the comics and trades in my office and put them into long boxes that live in the attic. When I do this, I always end up pulling out a few trades that I want to read again, so now you know what I've spent most of my discretionary (note that I didn't...
Silly and awesome way to learn a few things. Loved it, Wil!
Robot Astronomy Talk Show: Destroyer of Worlds
A few times a year, I get to go over to the Spitzer Science Center at Cal Tech, and do some voice over work for these wonderful educational shorts. I'm really proud to be a small part of IRrelevant Astronomy; we're making science accessible and entertaining, and hopefully inspiring people to lea...
It's weird, I was home sick from school that day too. But I saw it live and was the one who told my mom about it.
some of us are looking at the stars
On January 28, 1986, I was home from school with the flu. I remember that, no matter what I did, I couldn't get warm, so I was sitting in a hot bath when my mom knocked on the bathroom door. "There was an accident with the space shuttle," she said, in the same voice she used when she told me th...
Hey Wil,
It's not exactly a gamer's workout guide, but there is "The Walk to Rivendell and Beyond" which breaks down all the travels in The Lord of the Rings to the miles the characters traversed:

There are milestones for the journey and some calculators for tracking calories and such as well:

It turns out I had a fairly geeky weekend
In an effort to force myself out of this non-creative, unmotivated funk I've been in post-Eureka, I now commence a braindump from this weekend: I pressed the plunger down on my coffee press and tried to clear the sleep from my eyes while Anne put the orange juice back into the fridge. The mornin...
A few years ago, I saw Charo perform live at a state fair and really enjoyed her performance. She may come off kooky to some, but she really does have presence. That video reminded me of how she throws herself into what she's doing, and how I respect that.
Connect the dots! LA LA LA LA!
Anne and I got to go see The Pee Wee Herman show last night. It was phenomenal, and I realized about 20 minutes into the show that I was sitting on the edge of my seat, grinning and jumping around like a little kid ... because that's pretty much how I used to watch Pee Wee's Playhouse. After the...
ZOMG! Wesley as The Doctor-- that is hilarious and abso-freakin-lutely awesome!
I've always wanted a sonic screwdriver. Not a hunk of plastic with flashing lights and a pen but one that really works! :)
in which the secret identity of wesley crusher is revealed
Imagine if Television Without Pity recappers had been writing about TNG back in 1987, only with more swearing, more digressions and more geeky in-jokes, plus behind-the-scenes memories for every episode. That’s what Vol. 1 does for the first half of the first season of TNG, from “Encounter at Fa...
I really enjoyed this series of posts, Wil. I played a little D&D in middle school with my older bro and his friends. If we'd had a DM like you, I might have kept up with it. I was pretty shy and intimidated by playing with guys who knew the game a lot better and were all a few years older.
a few thoughts and lessons learned from behind the dm screen
Last weekend, I started a 4E campaign for my son Nolan and his friends. The plan is to take them through the entire Keep on the Shadowfell module, and then probably into Thunderspire Labyrinth, with possible detours into various level-appropriate Delves, or something from Monte Cook's awesome ne...
It hadn't occurred to me either until he brought it up. That conversation was a lovely mix of scifi references.
well, at least i got a good story out of it...
My table in the vendor's room at the Phoenix Comicon was right next to Aaron Douglas. Aaron is a good friend, and he knows that I'm a huge fan of his show and admirer of his work. He also knows that I'm way behind on BSG (near the end of season 3) so he's made this heroic effort to protect me fr...
You just reminded me of when I discovered my dentist is a scifi geek too. He's been watching BSG on DVD, so he's always half a season or more behind me. I despise spoilers with a fiery passion, so I'm always careful about what I say to him, but I wish he'd catch the frak up already! ;)

Did you see the Battlestar Galactica toaster? I thought that was pretty awesome.
It used to be on the NBC/Universal store site, but I don't see it there now.
There are some pics here.
four things
Four things this morning: This toaster gives new meaning to Dark Side. Newsweek is running a series called the Special Election Project. They had reporters inside both campaigns, with incredible access to candidates and staff, with the understanding that the story wouldn't be written until afte...

I couldn't have asked for a better photo (and caption!) on my birthday. Thanks, Wil!
i be a pensive pirate, me hearties
Yarr! It be 2008's Talk Like A Pirate Day, me Buckos! Shiver yer timbers when ye gaze 'pon me plastic pirate hat. It be small, but 'tis got an elastic strap and staples, to stay on in a stiff breeze. Now I'm set to wonderin' . . . what shall I plunder today?

I totally felt the cram-it-all-in-in-12-minutes urgency as I was reading which made me laugh.
Emerald City ComiCon Memories
I do the 48-minute work thing, and I'm as swamped and panicked as I think I've ever been as I prepare for a screen test tomorrow and a convention this weekend. This is certainly the worst since I was working on my PAX keynote, but I work well when I'm terrified. During this panic, blogging falls...

I'm glad to hear your recovery is coming along well, Wil. I've been thinking of you this week.
Now, get back to that tv! (Ghost in the Shell on Adult Swim is all kinds of awesome.)
i don't want to go on the cart
I feel happy! I feel happy! In all seriousness, I'm recovering at exactly the right pace, according to people who keep score on this sort of thing. Warning: this is about to get gross. I'm off all the meds, except for some stupid steroid for swelling that makes me really fucking irritable and re...

Hmm, I thought Chuck became pretty repetitive and annoying after a few episodes. Pushing Daisies is where the good tv's at, imo.
Except for Maya who I want to kill and Sylar who ought to be dead, I've been mostly enjoying Heroes this season. (Ok, I'd be happier if Peter and his bro were dead too.) Kristen Bell has me coming back to assuage my Veronica Mars withdrawal.
Tech Universe reviews Happiest Days
I promise this isn't going to turn into "The Happiest Days Reviews: in Exile." It's just that I needed to come up for air for a minute, and saw this review of Happiest Days at Tech Universe: Reading the well-written Happiest Days was a fun experience, and you can't help but feel like Wheaton is ...

That is pretty mind blowing. His theory makes more sense to me than most other explanations of the universe I've heard.
our lives, controlled from some guy's couch
And now, your daily dose of That Just Blew My Fucking Mind: Until I talked to Nick Bostrom, a philosopher at Oxford University, it never occurred to me that our universe might be somebody else’s hobby. I hadn’t imagined that the omniscient, omnipotent creator of the heavens and earth could be an...

Thanks, that's my kind of review. I do my best to avoid the ones overrun with plot synopses. They drive me nuts!
Yours had just what I wanted to know.
the simpsons movie
I took Ryan and his girlfriend to see The Simpsons movie earlier this week. Mini review: It did not disappoint. If you've watched The Simpsons as long as I have, this may make sense: it was like an above average episode from season seven. Slightly longer review: While not as subversive and ...
