I know this feel bro! ;) I wish I could explain to my wife that when she walks in while I am working and asks if I can do something else, this mental intertia explains why I don't just happily drop everything and do it right then! I think that those of us who work primarily in thought-based work feel this a lot. If you've never done intense thinking over a long period of time, it just doesn't register that this can happen. In the same way that people can't understand how you can be exhausted after sitting down at a desk all day. Fun!

I work as a developer full time from home (www.youneedabudget.com - blatant plug, but it's awesome!), and I've got three kids - two at school and one still at home. I've found getting a good pair of noise cancelling headphones can help, as it prevents the constant little noises kids make as they play/walk around/whatever from pulling you away from the screen. It's not perfect, but for a few hundred dollars, it can make a big difference in getting stuff done. Also, you can shut the office door for a period at a time, and teach them that when the door is shut, they stay out. Then do half-hour blocks of work, and pop out for five minutes or so after each, so they know they haven't been abandoned :)
Chris, check out "Frayed Knights: The Skull of S'makh-Daon" (here http://rampantgames.com/blog/?p=3403 ) It uses a system called 'drama stars', which you accumulate over time, and can use for all sorts of bonuses. BUT, if you reload a saved game, they are reduced back to 0, and you start collecting them again. This encourages you to keep going instead of reloading, but at the same time it also encourages you to use them, rather than hoarding them, as they are purely a temporary resource.

Hi Chris, I recently read through the book God's Undertaker by John Lennox and it brought to mind a lot of what I've read on your site over the past few years. It seems to hit this topic pretty square on, and you might appreciate it. Cheers!
