Though some of those energy saving LED bulbs consume less power, I have found them having less life.
I prefer to change the lifestyle for saving energy instead of finding out hundreds are new replacements. There are most places in day to day life that can be saving a lot of energy.
May be try reducing the daily hot water shower for few minutes and see the difference.

For a Bit of Colored Ribbon
For the last year or so, I've been getting these two page energy assessment reports in the mail from Pacific Gas & Electric, our California utility company, comparing our household's energy use to those of the houses around us. Here's the relevant excerpts from the latest report; click throug...
I guess it depends on how you look at it. Though the right scrolling certainly is painful and I hate it too. There can be a better visual design for such thread comments that no one has ever thought about.
Sometimes the main topic is left aside and a gossip discussion starts and makes people more engaged. May be your site would want people to be more engaged. Threaded may give at least some opportunity on this. I still remember the old digg threaded comments that were almost always more hilarious then the main story.
Web Discussions: Flat by Design
It's been six years since I wrote Discussions: Flat or Threaded? and, despite a bunch of evolution on the web since then, my opinion on this has not fundamentally changed. If anything, my opinion has strengthened based on the observed data: precious few threaded discussion models survive on t...
I am still stuck with my USB 2.0 port laptops. No 3.0 since they are old. I guess its time to switch my stack. I have to still figure out some good backup storage for my media.
A SSD in Your Pocket
I woke up a few days ago and realized I was still carrying the same 32 GB USB flash drive on my keychain that I purchased in 2010. I thought to myself, this is an unacceptable state of affairs. Totally. Unacceptable. It's been few years since I seriously looked at USB drive performance. Premi...
Its been long time since I have heard something good about a microsoft product. I couldn't stop laughing at phrase "Unless you're required by God to hate all things touched by Microsoft".
Someone told me that Windows is just a operating system but MAC is a religion :)
Slowly the world of handheld is reaching smaller life span, it makes me think how the companies would survive competing with all these increasing needs. Businesses are already spending on android/ios and now W8 is going add to the mix. Hope things will merge in a decade or so.
Do You Wanna Touch
Traditional laptops may have reached an evolutionary dead-end (or, more charitably, a plateau), but it is an amazing time for things that … aren't quite traditional laptops. The Nexus 7 is excellent, the Nexus 10 looks fantastic, I can't wait to get my hands on the twice-as-fast iPad 4, the n...
This article reminds me of the best book I have ever read on usability - "Dont make me think". Surely, its all about usability, at the end internet user does not care what extra ordinary technology and coding efforts have been put into a web application.
I guess, most software developers make a strong opinion about any site within first few page of browsing.
I tend to not trust a bad layout site, even if its government affiliated or verisign/other CSA certified. Though everyone may have different opinion about it.
Judging Websites
I was invited to judge the Rails Rumble last year, but was too busy to participate. When they extended the offer again this year, I happily accepted. The Rails Rumble is a distributed programming competition where teams of one to four people, from all over the world, have 48 hours to build a...
Leading by example is probably one of the best techniques to earn more respect and have your team motivated.
The vive.ly link is probably causing a lot of deley on your blog...I am seeing this from past few days. not sure if anyone else has noticed this slowness yet. It takes almost 30 seconds to open each page on your blog which used to be fraction of seconds in past.
But You Did Not Persuade Me
One of my favorite movie scenes in recent memory is from The Last King of Scotland, a dramatized "biography" of the megalomaniac dictator Idi Amin, as seen through the eyes of a fictional Scottish personal physician. Idi AminI want you to tell me what to do! GarriganYou want ME to tell YOU ...
