Spammers and phishers pay close attention to current events. They incorporate scandals, weather or political events into spampaigns because these kinds of events draw our attention to the eventand away from the cues and clues we might otherwise notice in an email message that would cause us to be suspicious. The subject lines of this week's spotlighted spam attempt to exploit the unemployed with an undeniably attractive job offer from Facebook. Or Amazon. Or Google. No, eBay. OK... craigslist. The links embedded in this enticing message take you to a job advertising scam landing page. All the links on that... Continue reading

Remember that 'ancient' artifact that US President Hussein Obama gave Iranian President Hassan Rohani during their meeting at the UN? Well, it's not so ancient. In fact, it's about as 'ancient' as my 6th child - vintage 1999. Not only is it a fake, it’s a bad fake. The saga of the griffin, from its production to its much-touted return to Iranian President Rouhani during his recent visit to New York, demonstrates how fakers of ancient art fool the gullible wealthy with the connivance of museums and scholars. More profoundly, it shows how ancient (or not so ancient) artifacts are... Continue reading

By offering buyers and sellers a free alternative to paid listings in newspapers, online classifieds site Craigslist saved users about $5 billion from 2000-2007, while costing local newspapers the same amount in lost classified advertising revenues, according to a new study by professors at the NYU Stern School of Business and Harvard Business School. Click Image To Enlarge The study, titled “Responses to Entry in Multi-Sided Markets: The Impact of Craigslist on Local Newspapers,” explored the impact of Craigslist by analyzing newspaper publisher results over time, focusing on their degree of reliance on classifieds and the timing of Craigslist entry... There was good news and bad news for social media marketing to be found in theresultsof the latest CMO Survey from Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business, which polled 410 marketing executives (most of them vice-presidents or above) from July 16-August 6, 2013. First the good news: CMO survey respondents said they expect social media marketing’s share of overall marketing budgets to increase from an average 6.6% currently to 9.1%... Continue reading
