Jeff, Nice Dodge, but I'm being serious. I work for a small software company that does its own hosting and server maintenance is killing us. I don't think your comparison is useful without some estimation of these costs. It's easy to assume these things are free while burdening your developers with support tasks and wondering why all the software projects are late.
Jeff, Please include your hourly rate and the number hours you spent researching, building, installing OS, etc. Please also include an estimate for the monthly hours you'll spend on maintenance and updates. Without this data there is no comparison to the cloud services.
Same for me, My list is for the stuff I don't want to do. I don't think your advice is very helpful here, as I don't want to coach myself into waking up thinking "I can't wait to clean the air filter today!". Not cleaning the air filter isn't a better option.

@Rob Paulson If you have a personal idea that you think could start your own company, you are free to keep it to yourself and use the 20% time for some other idea that maybe isn't so grand.

Granted I've only been in this industry for 9 years, but "maintain their own forks and patches" seems like advice that should only be used as a last resort. When you do this you really hurt your upgrade path, and it is easy to get stuck with certain versions of software. I still cringe when I think of the shops have to use windows xp and IE 6 because of these kinds of dependencies (of course this is probably more due to activeX).

I don't know why so many of you like being in a dark room. It is proven to increase headaches when looking at a bright screen, and I find headaches to be a distraction.
