IMF head in 'double-dip' global economy warning via news.bbc.co.uk so we need more stimulus to avoid a double dip recession ... but doesn't that lead us right into the oh so feared triple dip recession? because we all know too well that three stimuli are better then two, and don't stop your economic stimulation until you are well into the next bubble. 2009 ended up quite a gadget year for me. towards the end i more or less did a complete refresh of devices. and there were some real surprises along the way. so first off here is a list of the devices that got added across the year: iPhone 3GS Blackberry Curve Nokia E72 27'' iMac (quad core) Tour headsets by Dr. Dre Bose Quiet Comfort 15 Kindle (2nd Gen) B&N Nook let's start with which of these devices i still carry around with me ... that is the Nokia E72, the Bose QC15, and the B&N Nook ... and my... ... and admit that shows like last night's golden globes and next month's oscars are just about commerce, and not about which are the best movies. the problem with these awards is that most of the time they mistake grandeur with good. avatar might be a good movie, it might even be revolutionary from a film making perspective (although i just hope that future movies won't be like avatar), and un-doubtaly it is a biggest grossing movie of the year. over the last decade it seems to me that the movies that won especially the oscars (and it seems that... Maybe an excellent résumé and an inspiring life story are not enough to qualify one as a real statesman. via www.nytimes.com every now and then maureen dowd comes up with an excellent column in the nyt ... today is such a day. she is spot on in questioning mccain's politics and his hypocrisy. similar to his statement earlier in the week that kennedy would hate to see the health care reform be passed in a partisan way/along party lines ... well yes, that is because mccain and his fellow republicans did not allow for any substantial debate of the topic... ever since the first kindle critics of ereaders have complaint about how slow pages turn. and which each new ereader entering the market they bring up this complaint. and yes, pages on ereaders turn a tiny bit slower than if you turn a page in a traditional paper book (btw, none of those that complain about ebook page turns have ever complained about the time it takes to load the second page of a web based 10 story report on the wsj). and yes, the nook is turning pages a tiny bit slower than the kindle (although i have to... i have had three iphone models so far and have sold each one of them for the following two reasons: i don't want my whole life to be hijacked by the iphone the form factor of the iphone is horrible ok, and now that i use the new nokia e72 i have to say that the call quality of the iphone is also pretty bad. i know there has been a lot of debate about att and a lot of complaints by iphone users about att, but i have to say that i have not problems with att. the call... so i have been using the nook on a daily basis now for nearly a week, and i am still happy with the device. and probably of interest to some, i don't regret having given up the kindle for the nook. but as with any device ... and especially a version 1 of a product, there are areas of improvement. first of all barnes & noble should improve its supply chain, to make sure people get their nooks (btw, let me remind people that amazon had its fair share of problems getting kindles to users as did apple when it... via images.businessweek.com this is one thing i hope that bloomberg won't change ... and that is businessweek's innovation and design coverage. on both topics they were ahead of most other business publications (and ahead of a lot of business thinkers). i rarely bought businessweek since i found their general business coverage to be not much better than what i got in the FT or in the Economist, but whenever they had a innovation or design special i would get the issue and it was usually worth the money. Google and Yelp are in advanced acquisition negotiations, we’ve confirmed from multiple sources. And while the deal isn’t done, we’ve heard that it’s very likely to close. The price is supposedly at least $500 million. ... Google is building out their own directory of local businesses with its Place Pages, which can be accessed via Google Maps and local search. They are encouraging local businesses to put Google-branded stickers in store windows and recently added their own ratings summaries via www.techcrunch.com i don't know but i don't see a reason for this deal. ok, google wants to build out its... an early review of the nook. i just got it and here are my first impressions. first off, speed is by far not as big of a problem as pogue makes it to be, and the form factor makes it much easier to hold ... so my verdict ... i keep the nook. Continue reading

Avatar will drive "incredible excitement" in the months to come, says Pali Research's Rich Greenfield. Because of that, Rich upgraded News Corp. from a sell to neutral in a note this morning. via www.businessinsider.com I am sorry, but this is typical investor analyst stuff. first rule of research ... don't assume that because you like something it will be a hit, or others like it (Rich makes this mistake). second rule, take a look at the numbers ... the movie and the marketing is so damn expensive that even if the movie becomes a titanic like success the profit will... so one feature the kindle is catching up on is the link to computers. so being able to read a book also on your computer (or laptop for that). the nook offers a reader for both pcs and macs. amazon so far only offers a pc version, which i haven't seen yet since i use a mac -- yes, thank you amazon for supporting the mac. if the computer app is similar to their iphone app though then the app will not be able to show newspapers and magazines. and while barnes & noble already has a mac version of...
