Whatever it is, it's really realy lovely!
Eye Candy Friday
have i mentioned that i'm working on some secret projects?
I've been debating about buying this book, but I think I'll have to cave in and pick it up now! (seriously, it has "dessert" int he title: why was I even second-guessing this?)
a fruit-filled cookie-cake type of awesomeness
This is a teacake from this book I keep mentioning, Rustic Fruit Desserts, and it is noteworthy for many reasons. It's kind of like a cake, kind of like a cookie, the dough can be easily frozen, almost any fruit can be used, and it requires no rolling. You make the dough, press half into the b...
Yay for homemade bread!!!! i never realized you hadn't made it before. It seems like such a you thing to do (you know, w/ one of your fabulous aprons on and whatnot). Such a great experience! I'm glad you've had it!
OMG! IMB!
Raining, raining, raining. Rainy afternoons this week. I have a new cookbook called The River Cottage Family Cookbook by Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall and Fizz Carr. I LOVE this book. I am reading it cover to cover and I'm about halfway through. What I love about it is that it is basically writt...
I fantasy shop a lot!!!!! Glad to know I'm not the only one who does this. Some people I know think it's odd....
garden inspiration
Last week I was clicking around the internet, doing a bit of fantasy shopping (where you don't click 'checkout' at the end) and bemoaning the state of the Australian dollar. Right at the top of my wanty list was a couple of the gorgeous Paumes titles. The next day, I saw Claire had been doing...
That's so sad! Your box was so beautiful and well-thought-out. Thank goodness for the kindness of strangers (not to go all Streetcar Named Desire on you)!
The kindness of random craft bloggers
It's a sign, I tell ya. I neither received a box, or received any recognition from the person I sent my box to (although the pictures showed up on flickr, so I know it was received). However, I did receive this sweet little handmade Coraline and a nifty tree keychain - as well as a few othe...
I tried Strange a couple of years ago and couldn't get into it, which bummed me b/c it's the book that everyone seems to love. Maybe I should try it again when I'm flying this weekend: a captive audience. :)
books I am reading and a link—
Hall of Best Knowledge , by Ray Fenwick is amazing. Not really a comic, but not fiction either. It's hard to describe. It's all hand lettered prose and opinions that has a formal absurdity that makes me so happy I could do cartwheels. Here's a bit more about him and what he is up to right no...
I had no idea about the individual flower for your actual birthday! I've learned something!!!!! I'm a buttercup (although I'm a serious fan of the birth month flower, morning glory!)
happy may day!
May Day was always one of my favorite holidays when I was little. I really did gather posies and leave them on our neighbor's steps and ring the bell—and run off, just like I read about in old timey story books. I am remembering now I always picked the flowers from not my garden, but from th...
Awesome! That's definitely a technique I would like to try. I've also wanted to try to take those pictures where you make a real scene look like a miniature, but I haven't gotten around to it. More thoughts than time, I guess....
Eye Candy Friday
so one of the reasons why i haven't been blogging so much lately is because i've been a little more obsessed with flickr and by extension with photography. more specifically with a technique called Through the Viewfinder. i'm having a lot of fun with it. ************************** don't ...
Love them! Simple and funny!
homemade cards
These cards were made for 2 reasons. Documentation and blank card requirements. We have been writing down our kids comments on a master list the last few months because they have been getting more and more amazing. I know this is the case with all kids, but dang. So, I wanted to d...
That picture has put a huge smile on my face!!!! Happy Blogiversary, Bandit!
HOLY CRAP! 5 YEARS ALREADY?
yep, the blog is 5 years old today! happy blogiversary to me! in honor of this very important day, i'm going to give out a couple of little prizes. leave me a comment, and i'll pick 2 or 3 people at random and send them something. and you have until ... let me see ... Friday April 24th. ...
Thanks for letting us know! I'm quite certain I need a new bag or strap!
Buy Early and Buy Often
i consider myself to be crazy fortunate to be friends with some extremely creative and talented people. and one of those people, is caro aka splityarn. if you've spent any time with me, you've probably noticed my orange-y camera strap. or perhaps you've admired one of the many box bags and/o...
I am the same way when people sart griping here during the summer! Yes, 116 degrees is hot, but it's super low humidity so that's beyond helpful, shade works here (unlike in Louisiana), and what did people expect moving to the desert? Crazy people!
Eye Candy Friday
one of my pet peeves, and i've been called on this because i seem to let it annoy me way more than it should, is when people who live here in New England, of their own free choice, complain about the winter. and how long it is. and how cold it is. and how snowy. and who wonder out loud if a ...
i'm so glad you said, "bite me." I hate when someone types a post and then people apparently get all whiney in the comments and then the post-writer has to get defensive and it's like, "People, it's her blog. You haven't had a vacation in whatever years, then whine about it on your blog. Don't make the blogger feel bad." Off my soapbox now! ;)
I Need A Vacation
this summer is almost over and today while talking to my parents, it occurred to me that j and i haven't had a "real" vacation in over a year. and i know, "boo-hoo fucking hoo," some of you are thinking. "we haven't had a vacation in 5 years ..." or whatever. yeah, well, bite me. i've gone wi...
I don't remember that craft project either! That is so awesome! I don't have a wood burner, though. I wonder if a basic dremel would work. Maybe if I carved really carefully....
random links and items I have meaning to mention
I need to blog about these items (numbered for handy reference) so I can get them out of my head and go to sleep : 1. Thanks for all the cheese making tips! I knew you'd all have a bunch of great info about this. 2. I don't have this vintage wooden nesting doll family, but I really want it. Ev...
I love to write notes like that sometimes. And sometimes grocery lists. Now I probably sound odd, but I'm all about trying to work in a bit of creativity whenever I can!
i like orange
from the most amazing new book I found at the last book sale, What is a Color? by Alice and Martin Provensen, c. 1967. I love the text littered with little drawings. It reminds me so much of other books I had in my childhood. It's giving me quilt ideas.
So cute!!!! Yay for Nightmare Before Christmas! (now I long to ditch work and watch the movie. Ok, I might have been longing to do that even before this post, but let's not think of that right now).
the sallys
Well, I did sew their costumes this year. I think having a back-up plan gave me the extra energy. They came together really fast spread out over a few nights. The fabric was all from my stash, which is so satisfying. I realize they don't really look like Sally's dress exactly, but I have never...
I love that movie! I finally saw it last year (how behind the times am I?) and just fell completely in love.
spooky stuff
These are the .68 cent cupcakes I mentioned last week. 2 kinds here--a pound cake with marionberry swiss buttercream and an espresso cake with mocha swiss buttercream. Mariko and I did the testing. I'm not a huge frosting fan, a little goes a long way for me, so I knocked off more than half. T...
I'm with J. on the jackhammer thing. Bless his heart for weilding one fo those for any length of time. I like how the socks are knitting up! Have you seen that short row fair Isle sweater in Loop-d-loop where each line angles into nothingness? The way the colors are knitting up reminds me of that. And I totally mean that in a good way because I really dig that sweater. I'll probably never knit it, but I dig it!
I Might be Knitting a Tyvek House
1. work on the house continues. thursday, j rented a jackhammer and pulverized our side and front steps so that getting into and out of the house is precarious at best. unfortunately, j did not announce that he was going to rent a jackhammer and do the work yesterday so i don't have a picture...
She's so cute!!!!! And really, this is coming from someone who doesn't think a baby is cute just by virtue of the fact it's a baby.
the hair
the first thing out of anyone's mouth when they meet phoebe is 'the hair!' then they look at me (gray masquerading as blond), then tim (reddish brown), then oscar (blondie) and try to figure it out. our best guess is it's my baby hair. I had dark spikey hair for about 4 months my mom says. the...
I've alwas been amused by the friend's nose joke. What does that say about me? Love the action shots of spinning! And the hoola girl. I have a Betty Boop hoola girl
5 More Days
this monday i'm on the ball. ok, maybe i'm not. i wrote that yesterday, which means that i had the best of intentions. but then i got sidetracked. but not today. so what do i like today (or rather what did i like yesterday?) 1. i'm leaving for vacation in 4 days! (it was 5 days yesterda...
CUTE!!!! I love describing it as a sleeping bag for a barrette!
this house is way into barrettes.
Thanks so much for the book love! I feel so supported and good about the whole thing. . .it's hard to put into words, except to say thank you. I am not really able to stay focused on any one big project right now (like the the quilt and blanket I have started and not finished for this baby) so...
If none of the pictures do it any justice then it must be truly glorious in person because frankly I'm in love with it from the pictures. It really makes me want one.
*ack* *cough* *a-choo!*
so i actually managed to make it through the winter without a sniffle only to get felled with a head full of goo, a hacking cough, weakness and general malaise a month before the start of summer. yesterday i couldn't breathe and spent most of the day updating my yarn stash inventory (i'd like t...
How self absorbed: making cupcakes for everyone! ;-) I'm kidding of course, since I worry that the joking way I meant that won't come across. Anyway, Haoppy Birthday! I hope you get your wish of a healthy family!
birthday, buddha, & some barfing.
Today is my birthday. I used to make a huge deal of my birthday, especially before having kids. I'd make cupcakes to share with everyone, have big parties, all that. I know it is very self absorbed-but hey, it's my birthday and it was always crazy fun, so there you go. I still try to make a ho...
