How delicate and interesting. Love.
Finished Project: Moss and ferns
It's taken a while (a long while), but I am happy to say that moss and ferns is finished. The textures are lovely together, and I think the recipient will like it (okay, I'm praying the recipient will like it...fingers crossed). P.S. She liked it! And doesn't she look adorable?
Oh my gosh. Are you the Great Pumpkin!?
A patriotic Halloween
Sometimes you have to take things into your own hands...like when one of your closest friends doesn't like Halloween, but does love Colonial Williamsburg. I couldn't let her son miss one of the great joys of childhood, so I picked up a tri-corner hat on a visit to Williamsburg earlier this yea...
This is hugely exciting news! I'm intimidated by all the possibilities.
Get Ready. Your Walls will Never Be the Same.
Spoonflower now makes wallpaper and decals! Some background on why this is so awesome: Spoonflower allows you to upload a design and print your own custom fabric (or to buy fabric from thousands of small designers). Now it also allows you to create your own wallpaper or wall decals. And, of...
What a lovely description. I feel like I'm there. I *wish* I were there.
This week in the garden: Redolent
That's the word that comes to mind every time I step into the backyard. The air is redolent with gardenias and jasmine. And the hydrangeas are in their full glory: Welcome, summer.
Best post title ever.
This week in the garden: Plants that like it rough
Each tree on our street is surrounded by a box -- a small area of soil (about 4 x 8 feet) usually filled with little more than weeds. For some time now, we've been trying to make the tree box in front of our house an extension of our garden, but it's been an uphill battle. These are not hospit...
I'm sad that these socks are so hard because they are so cute that I wish you would make a million of them in all the colors of the rainbow and sell them on Etsy.
Legs that go for days
That phrase takes on new meaning when one is knitting knee socks. It seems like these calves are taking forever. Every year, I seem to take on at least one project that leads me to ask, "What was I thinking?" Tate's blanket, Reese's elephant, and now...stirrup socks. I've never had much enth...
Yet another of your children's projects that I wish you would make for me in adult sizes.
Ray of sunshine dress
It's done! It's very simple, but I am happy with it. I'm looking forward to making another version with more fun details -- maybe an applique or some embroidery? But I wanted to keep this one simple... and I do love these buttons with the sunny yellow print. Details: Butterick B3772
How did it go? Will you share some tips?
Hibernating
Hello, friends! It's been a quiet week around here. I've been recovering from a cold and getting ready for the wrapping workshop tonight at Red Barn Mercantile. Hope to see you there!
Amazing. You are such a clever artist. It's so much fun to think of all the images you could make, embroidering the silhouettes of all sorts of beloved settings!
Home: A Portrait in Needle and Thread
When we bought our house, the previous owners gave us a very special gift: a small watercolor picture of the house. We hung it by the front door, and I love seeing it there, welcoming us home. We've put so much into our house -- painting, planting, building, and making a home. The house is lik...
What a brilliant idea for a class! And they are so lucky to have you teach it. I badly wish I were in DC to participate!
Mark Your Calendars: Creative Gift Wrapping Workshop at Red Barn Mercantile!
I have always loved wrapping gifts. When I was little, my mom put special care into our presents. My favorite part was that she used Christmas ornaments instead of gift tags on presents. It was easy to tell who's was who's, because the ornaments reflected our favorite things, which changed as...
Those mittens are blowing my mind.
Ravelry roundup: Gift ideas
With the holidays approach, I thought I'd share a few quick-to-knit gifts in this ravelry roundup. All of these accessories use bulky yarn, which I love and which knits up fast. I am enamored with the Mortar cowl by Elizabeth F. Parker -- think of all the fun color possibilities: via fuxxxia'...
I couldn't be more jealous. As far as Halloween spirit goes, it's a ghost town here in Paris. And not the good kind.
Happy Halloween!
We took a long walk last night to get in the Halloween spirit. As usual, Capitol Hill had plenty on display. I love living in a neighborhood where so many people get into the fun. Twilight is really the perfect time for a Halloween walk. Even simple cobwebs take on a ghoulish glow. Th...
Stop it. I will take up embroidery if I can get a unicorn floss bobbin. Or maybe I will just use it to hold dental floss.
Discovery: Felt and Wire Shop Supply
Okay, I'm not sure it counts as a discovery when they actually send you an e-mail about it, but I still felt like I'd stumbled onto something wonderful when I found out about Felt and Wire Shop's supply section. I've posted before about my love affair with Felt and Wire Shop (a curated collecti...
I can't stop laughing about this.
More from the garden: Beets and Cucerdews
I harvested beets over the weekend. It was pretty thrilling -- I planted them from seed in March, and now they're pushing their little shoulders above ground, ready for harvest. Emphasis on LITTLE shoulders. I made two critical mistakes: planting them in our relatively small raised bed, wh...
My pleasure! God, I want some of those cheese biscuits so badly...
This week in the garden: Green tomatoes
Cutting down the tomato vines at the end of the season is sad work, but it has to be done. The highlight of the task is being surrounded by the wonderful smell of tomato vines -- I love that smell -- but the worst part is cutting down fruit that will never ripen in these shorter, colder days. ...
That yarn looks so beautiful and soft. I want to fill a deep sink to the brim with it and then plunge my arms in.
Also, "reminiscent of chunky glass necklaces -- not really my style"? Ha.
I ♥ Sam Spun Yarn
Sam Spun yarn is probably my favorite discovery from the Sheep and Wool Festival. As you might guess from the name, the yarn is handspun by a lovely lady named Sam. Usually, I shy away from handspun, variegated yarns, in part because handspun yarns are usually a little crazy, with bright colors...
I so want that grumpasaurus for my desk at work.
Ravelry roundup: Softies
I'm starting my first knit stuffed animal, and I am super excited about it. Unfortunately, it's a surprise, so I can't share it with you quite yet, but I can show you some of the best softie patterns out there. Starting with this little lady: Georgia the Giraffe via Lion Brand The Bramble Ow...
This is breathtaking--as in, i found myself literally holding my breath. If you ever get into the miniature knitting business, please let me know so that I can commission you to help me achieve my childhood dream of acquiring an ornate dollhouse, whose residents you could attire.
Guest Blogger Lindy Parker: Knitflix
Since my life at Why Not Us? is largely consumed with all things cinematic, it's perhaps no surprise that the majority of my knitting and sewing projects are finished while watching movies. In fact, I would argue that there are few activities more perfectly matched than knitting and movie-viewi...
I love the idea of friends in different states using this to knit against each other. Like Call of Duty, but instead of wreaking chaos and death, you make a lovely scarf.
Guest Blogger: Janelle Holmboe
Before we jump in, I want to take a moment to send Dawn and her grandmother my prayers and hopes for quiet and calm and peace. I take great comfort in the fact that there is no one I would rather have knitting next to my bed in times of sickness or crisis than Dawn. I am sure her grandmother f...
Wow. Your husband really is a crazy thoughtful gift giver.
A very exciting way to start the new year: Find me at www.idlehandsdc.com
That's right! Nick got me a fantastic Christmas present -- a new domain name! So, if you've bookmarked the old typepad address, you can continue to use it, but if you're out and about and want to stay in the loop, you can just type in www.idlehandsdc.com. As always, thanks for visiting.
What I wanted give for her double mounted Momma and Baby Loch Ness taxidermy.
Crafty Bastards Arts & Crafts Fair
Last Saturday, I headed over to Adams Morgan to check out the Crafty Bastards Arts & Crafts Fair. It was intense! The show is incredibly curated: every booth showcases work that is creative, cheeky, and fun. Here are some of my favorites: supermaggie I love supermaggie's t-shirts, which I've ...
What a risqué post! I love it!
This week in the garden: Miracles of science
I love our hibiscus, which is still going strong after blooming all summer: In the fall, it drops tons of seeds, and in the spring, tiny plants pop up all around it. I have no choice but to pull them all up like weeds (unless I wanted the entire front yard to turn into a hibiscus grove), but ...
Your zinnias are so vivid that I expect them to jump to life like the flora of "Flowers and Trees" (coincidentally, the first animated use of Technicolor!).
This week in the garden: Zinnias
I planted zinnias from seed this spring, and I am so happy with them. The colors are so bright and modern they don't seem natural. They're like technicolor flowers.
I'm now picturing every knit item with a black body stocking. It's not not working.
The new issue of Knitty is here
And it looks like I'm not the only one excited about fall. My favorite new patterns: The Lanesplitter skirt, designed by Tina Whitmore © Tina Whitmore. All rights reserved. Used with permission. Flo the elephant, designed by Franklin Habit © Franklin Habit. All rights reserved. Used w...
I cannot believe how beautifully this whimsical blanket turned out. I'm absolutely speechless.
Evelyn's quilt
Evelyn's quilt is finished, and I am so, so happy with it. It is quite possibly my favorite thing I've ever made. The pattern is based on the Nightingale Lap Quilt pattern from Doodle Stitching, but I tweaked it so the embroidery would reflect the flowers and trees from Heather Ross's Far ...
