April 11th 2013 was a momentous evening as H.E. Tsem Rinpoche gave his first teaching at Kechara Forest Retreat. The teaching was about "Da-mey" - the no-self. What is the no self? Rinpoche began by asking where is the "I"? Is it in my finger? If it is, and I... Continue reading

Thank you (I think) Shirley for nominating my blog for this Liebster Blog Award Challenge. As far as i know, the 'award' is to simply help bloggers spread awareness about each other’s blogs. 1) Every nominee has to write 11 interesting/little known facts about herself/himself. 2) Then answer 11 questions... This morning, Tsem Rinpoche asked us what we thought of these gorgeous new Vajrayogini statues. Then he asked who wanted one, which perked us all up even though it was like 4.30am. Of course we were immediately waving our arms in the air except for one person. Rinpoche said we... Continue reading

Pastor Susan Lim has always been crazy about animals. She can have the worst day in the world and be grouchy as hell but when an animal walks by, she immediately flashes her 1000 kilowatt smile and softens down. As a result, our house has become an animal shelter of... Continue reading

Today, I read about the great Greek philosopher and mathematician Pythagoras (c. 570-495 BC) who believed in reincarnation... and he wasn't even a Buddhist. He said, "All things change, nothing perishes. As a wax is stamped with certain figures, then melted, then stamped anew with others, yet it is always... Continue reading

Eating meat has become the culturally and socially accepted norm, but it doesn't mean that it is right. There simply isn't any justification for eating meat. People say that they need meat for health reasons but we can get protein from mushrooms, soy, beans etc. Look at Patrik Baboumian, Germany’s... Continue reading

Last night, Rinpoche shared an interesting concept with us. All of us have attachments, but we should change our attachments from mundane things that never last to the Dharma, which will bring us permanent happiness. Everything in life which we are attached to - our family, our partner, our children,... Continue reading

The third edition, also known as the LOVE edition, of If Not Now, When was reviewed by The Sun newspaper today. This compilation of inspirational quotes by HE Tsem Rinpoche is one of my favourite books. I say that without bias even though i am one of the editors! I... Continue reading

One of the most interesting teachings I received recently was on relationship and Buddhism. In a nutshell, i learned that as long as we are in a relationship, we will never receive attainments. Same goes if we have children. This is because we see these few people - our partner... Continue reading

Time flies so fast. I remember when he was just a smiling baby in my arms and now he's a strapping lad who is a whole head taller than me. He turned 15 on Tuesday and as I had a meeting scheduled on Tuesday itself, I told him I'd take... Continue reading

If our communication sucks, we need to change the way we communicate. People often get frustrated by the same miscommunications repeating over and over again. The solution? Change the way you communicate. If you repeat the same method, you will get the same result. Change the method so you can... Continue reading

Today is 11 October. Yesterday would have been our 23rd wedding anniversary. Our divorce was final in 2007. Why am I looking at the past? Do I wish I was still married? NO. Tom was simply my best friend for the longest time and I miss the friendship. One of... Continue reading

i don't see the negative side of sex at all! :) Sex is an action, that's all. It is neither positive nor negative. However, i believe that it is our animalistic attitude towards sex - the craving for its transient physical pleasure which is our downfall. Wanting pleasure is part of the 8 worldly concerns, which we, as Buddhists, are taught to abandon.

A few weeks ago, I watched a romantic/fantasy comedy movie called The Invention of Lying, which had a great concept - of a world where nobody lied. Everyone told the truth, until of course one day, someone figured out that he could lie. Soon after, I had dinner with a... Continue reading

Dear Curious, Thank you for writing so extensively in your comment. With regard to the existence of God, this question is not addressed in Buddhism, which has led Buddhists to believe that it is not important whether God exists or not. According to Buddhism, karma is the universal law by which everything in samsara (the 6 realms of existence) abides. There is no celestial being judging our every move... but every move has a cause and an effect, which is governed by karma. Karma does not judge, it merely is a law that explains how certain actions lead to certain consequences. Buddha figured out how it worked and taught us, so that we stop falling into the same hole. As for infinite lives - Buddha taught us the four noble truths (http://www.thebigview.com/buddhism/fourtruths.html), which encompass all of Buddha's teachings: 1. Life means suffering. 2. The origin of suffering is attachment. 3. The cessation of suffering is attainable. 4. The path to the cessation of suffering. Because Buddha became enlightened, he shows us the way - the path - to achieve the very state he has achieved. Contrary to nobody achieving nirvana, there are many highly attained monks who have achieved a state of enlightenment and this can be seen by their qualities and their works. Buddha said that there are 84,000 ways to achieve enlightenment. These methods vary greatly but one is not necessarily better than the other. Do you follow any religion?

Spirituality is all about destroying selfishness. The biggest goal of our spiritual practice is to become less selfish. We should examine if our attitude has changed from before we met Dharma. If after we have met Dharma, our attitude has not changed i.e. our selfishness has not lessened, then we have not applied the Dharma we have learned. Continue reading

Many people have a misconception of sex in tantric practice. If there is at all any interest in sexual physical pleasure in the pursuit of tantra, the motivation is already wrong.

Dear Daniel, I am not sure if it is available anywhere on the net but you can get this information from the following book: The Living Buddha Within http://vajrasecrets.com/books/english-books/book-living-buddha-within.html or more comprehensively from the Tsongkhapa boxset: http://vajrasecrets.com/books/box-sets/tsongkhapa-boxset-english.html If you have 7 cups, it represents: 1. water for drinking (traditionally, when inviting a VIP guest, you offer a drink) 2. water for washing the feet (traditionally in india, it is very dusty, so you offer to wash the visitor's feet) The other 5 offerings are the offerings of the 5 aggregates, which are the cause of all our sufferings - basically, when we see ugly things, smell nasty smells, touch icky stuff, taste lousy food, hear awful sounds, we get unhappy.. so we offer up our attachment to our 5 senses to the Buddhas when we make our water offerings. 3. flower (sight) 4. incense (smell) 5. perfume (touch) 6. food (taste) 7. conch shell (sound) That is the short explanation. Hope it helps :)

Sex is the biggest lie perpetuated throughout the world. No matter what race, religion or culture, all of us have manifested as the result of copulation. For the majority of us, we then spend our lives pursuing the desire to have sexual union with others. Freud was right. Everything is... Continue reading
