Hey, I know that friend! And yes, the first half was AWESOME. I keep telling myself the end was horrible, but I suspect I am wrong. :)
wil wheaton vs. paul and storm at Largo this Tuesday
REMINDER: Wil Wheaton vs. Paul and Storm is this coming Tuesday, March 29, at Largo. As you might possibly guess (if you are incredibly perceptive), we are doing a show with our old w00tstock fellow-traveler Wil Wheaton. This time, we’ll meet on the battlefields of Los Angeles at one of our fav...
9 books? You sir underestimate your popularity. Charming, that.
possible (and very limited) autographed book sale
I've been cleaning out my office, organizing comic books and games, and slowly crawling through a decade's accumulation of geek stuff. It. Has. Been. AWESOME. Last night, I went into the depths of the hallway closet, and behind a bunch of CDs and DVDs, I found nine hardback copies of The Happies...
"Just keep pretending we're the Seven Dwarfs, maybe he won't turn us into gold..."
merry smurfin' smurfmas, mothersmurfers
This is crying out for a caption. I'll choose my favorite, and send something neat* to whoever writes it. Submissions open throughout the weekend, one per person, and can only be left as comments here (it's too difficult to track on Twitter or via e-mail). *definition of 'neat' will be at my s...
You're the second person to recommend "Fragile Things" as a first Neil Gaiman read. (I'm ashamed to say I've never read anything of his...)
I ordered it the other day, and look forward to reading it. :)
A Little Summer Reading
Yesterday on Twitter, I joked: "Trying to read a book about Heisenberg's Uncertainty Principle, but whenever I look for it, it moves."The book I was talking about it called Uncertainty: Einstein, Heisenberg, Bohr, and the Struggle for the Soul of Science It's wonderful, and I highly recommend...
I would -- largely because you're one of the artists I like to support. Short stories alone are a tough sell, but If you bound 'em up in a book, I'd buy it.
anyone interested in a short fiction collection?
I have a question for everyone who reads my blog: if I put some short stories I'd written together into a little collection and sold it at Lulu, would you be interested? I ask this because I collected a few short stories into a limited edition chapbook for last year's PAX Prime, and it's been si...
Awe shucks, I don't know which is cooler, you giving props to Linux or you sitting in Sheldon's spot.
I know which one I'm more jealous of though... :D
-Shawn (from Linux Journal)
Wil Wheaton Prime uses Linux to bring you Evil Wil Wheaton sitting in Sheldon's spot.
This picture was taken right after we finished shooting The Creepy Candy Coating Corollary last year. I'm not going to lie to you, Marge: it's one of my prized possessions. It's taken me this long to share it, because shortly after I upgraded my Macs to Snow Leopard, all of my Macs and my HP sc...
Everyone -- I just got broadband installed in our rental place today, so I finally have an opportunity to respond in person to the amazing outpouring of love my family has received these past few days. Wil, thank you for bringing attention to the efforts my coworkers have done to raise cash for us. Even though we have insurance, I'm amazed at the expenses involved, and with the length of time insurance claims take to process. While I can't believe the generosity we've been shown, I further can't believe how great our immediate needs have been. So thank you, all, from the bottom of my heart. My family only knows bits and pieces of how much and how many people are loving on them. It's unfair that I'm the only one that gets to watch them discover it first hand. :)
Oh, and Wil, while we have exchanged enough emails and such that I certainly wouldn't feel odd having lunch with you in real life (heck, I'll be in LA next month) -- I must admit, there would still probably be times between french fries that I couldn't help but exclaim, "DUDE, YOU WERE ON FRIGGEN STAR TREK!!!!!" In fact, I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if you do that on your own from time to time. Poor Anne. :)
Thanks again everyone. Humans rock.
Helping Shawn Powers
Shawn Powers, who edits Linux Journal and is a friend to geeks everywhere, lost his house to a fire today. Scalzi says: Shawn Powers, a friend of Whatever and also a frequent commenter here, has had a very bad day: His house has burned up. The good news is Shawn, his wife and children are safe; ...
You have no idea how happy it makes me that your son beat you at Combat. Because I have an *actual* 8 year old in my house that beat me while I was training for our epic battle.
And she is a girl.

Geek in Review: As a Matter of Fact, I Have Played Atari Today
As promised yesterday, this month's Geek in Review stands entirely on its own, but also goes well (if I do say so myself) with this week's LA Daily. As a matter of fact, I have played Atari today "You're the undisputed master of Combat," I told my son. "As your reward, you get to watch me play...
Narrowing it down to 4 is rather hard. And regarding a MAME cabinet -- Wil, If I can do it, you can do it. Here's an article I wrote in Linux Journal on the process:

Really, it's a great weekend project. :)
nostalgia overload
One of the super-useful bits of advice I picked up somewhere about writing and blogging goes like this: most people can't write for a book and a blog at the same time, because our brains get different kinds of feedback and rewards from each. For most of us, if we had to pick, we'll write in our ...
wake up Anne and get The Wrath.
I actually misread that "Wraith", and your wife scared me a whole lot more for a minute... :)
in which munchkin is played
Ryan and Nolan don't carry my DNA, but they are my sons in every way that matters. Every day, it seems, I see more and more of myself in them, and it's been the greatest reward in the world to see them reflect my values at the most unexpected moments. Last night, their friend Michael came over, ...

Heh. Never seen photos of your dogs. For some reason, they're nothing like what I pictured in your writing. :)
not so stealthy
Yesterday, the stealth bomber flew over our house seven or eight times. It totally would have gotten away with it, if it wasn't for my dogs, who bark like crazy whenever blimps or other low-flying aircraft go over our house. I guess it was doing a flyover as part of a December 7th memorial.

Wil: Penguicon. MWAAAAHAHAHAAAA. Looking forward to it. :)
"fandom's about not being alone anymore"
I need to share this heartbreaking, wonderful and insightful post about friendship and fandom at Firefox News: This is fandom. Aside from the squeeing, aside from the flamewars, 'shipwars, and FK wars (don't ask), it's about forming a community. It's about making friends with people you'd other...

Great plan, Wil. That's awesome.
awesome news that is awesome
For those of you who are wondering about the audio version of Happiest Days of Our Lives : it's currently in post-production. My producer/partner/engineer/friend David, who should be working on it 24/7 and only stopping to occasionally eat and pee, had the nerve to go get cast as Eric Doyle on H...

Good to hear (har har har).
And yes, enjoy your Guinness.
breathe . . . breathe in the air
Hey, want to have some fun? Take a look at your nose. See how normally-sized it is? Pretty small and stuff, right? Maybe a few centimeters across? This afternoon, my doctor pulled two plastic splints out of mine, each the about one-and-a-half times the size of a silver dollar and shape of a sm...

I wonder, does your voice sound any different?

heh -- I actually wear both the "No place like 127.." shirt, AND the "10 kinds of people" shirt in 2 different product reviews at Linux Journal.

I love it when people "get" stuff like that. My favorite though is the XKCD "Sudo Make Me a Sandwich" shirt. But that one is REALLY hard to explain...
the loneliest number
I have a sticker on my car that says, "There is no place like 127.0.0.1" I get to explain it to a lot of people, and I'm usually rewarded with a blank look, followed by a pitying look, followed by parents holding on tightly to their children as they move away slowly at first, then quickly, neve...

I'm mostly enjoying "The New Space Opera" anthology I found in the bookstore. Here is my current partial review, and here's the amazon link to prove I'm not trolling for visits to my site. :)
MWM seeks SF Anthology for Casual Reading
I love SF novels, and count stories like The Forever War and The Ghost Brigades among my all-time favorites, but in the last year, I've grown very fond of the SF short story. Since an SF short story is what I hope to scrape out of my brains as my next writing project, I've been reading as many s...
