I have nothing but respect for this stick insect who showed up on our window screen yesterday. In seven years we've never seen one this big. This guy is HUGE!!! He's about as big around as a pencil. I imagine he has to be pretty old to have gotten this... Continue reading

Our super Saturday began with a visit to a book sale put on by the Community Action Alliance. It was a pleasure to run into a friend we don't see often. Always nice to see you Scott! You can see by the number of books in the box we did... Continue reading

Thanks Joseph! This was Playa Esterillos heading towards Playa Bejuco. Yes, we pretty much had the place to ourselves. Thats why we like going to the beach mid-week during the rainy season!!!

June has been declared Environment Month by the Costa Rican Environment Ministry. We had been hearing about the Environmental Fair on the radio all week. When I asked hubby if he wanted to do something yesterday he suggested we go and see what it was all about. We both got... Continue reading

A while back a fellow yogini gave us a cutting of a reina de la noche (brugmansi) from her garden. I finally put the cutting into a little pot and it gifted us with this lovely lavender flower. This is actually the third flower but the first to survive and... Continue reading

Random shots from our recent drive through San Jose. Banco de Costa Rica The photo doesn't to this church justice. It was a beautiful cobalt blue. It's the first church I've ever seen connected to a grocery store. Typical city street. I've got a thing for corner buildings. Neighborhood carnival.... Continue reading

This is one of the two types of hummingbird moths that frequent our yard during the rainy season. We've seen the other, smaller one too but haven't gotten a photo yet. Both types of moth flit around quickly like hummingbirds, hence the name. Continue reading

May 12th was Mother's Day in many parts of the world but not in Costa Rica. Normally we celebrate in August with the locals but this year my daughter will be away on Mother's Day so we celebrated U. S. Mother's Day for a change. We went into the city... Continue reading

I saw this on Facebook today and decided to make it for lunch. Bill isn't much of a cucumber fan so I left them out of our salad. We thought it was delicious! Here's a link to Kaylyn's Kitchen and the full recipe. Continue reading

Ya know Paul, it seems they havent been calling as much this year. Thats why we figured on a late start to the rainy season. We enjoy their songs, all of the bird songs as well.

The first of May started off as a hot one. I was at the fruit market about 7:30am and people were all commenting on the heat. When I got home I broke out the fans for the first time this year. Even the pups were appreciative of the air movement... Continue reading

Our beautiful daughter has had another birthday. She's almost an adult but not quite. My, how time flies! It's hard to imagine us being able to let her go when the time comes for her to leave the nest. Knowing the time is coming sooner than later we're enjoying every... Continue reading

This is our new favorite spot in Puntarenas! Easy to see why we enjoyed it so much, huh. One can watch the ferry pass while relaxing in the pool or kicking back on the lounge chairs in the shade. There are plenty of tables to enjoy lunch from the restaurant.... Continue reading

Puntarenas has changed quite a bit in the time we've been living in Costa Rica. Years ago I wouldn't have said it but now I believe we'll be relaxing in Puntarenas more often. Earlier in the week we had business to take care of in Puntarenas. After that was done,... Continue reading

The second blooming of the 2013 coffee crop in our neighborhood occurred last weekend. Perfect timing for the horseback riders as they rode through on the annual cabalgata. The coffee blooms always remind me of a light dusting of snow. It's so pretty and the aroma... heavenly. Sadly the blooms... Continue reading

We go through a lot of strawberries now. Theyre great in our smoothies. Had an awesome avocado/strawberry salad the other night. Vigorón is usually a chicharron, piece of yuca, cabbage salad with tomato, lime, cilanto chimichurri on top. Weve seen it served in a paper cone or on a plate. Minus the chicharron it is a healthy snack and delicious.

We took a drive yesterday to Vara Blanca for their annual strawberry festival. Combining a visit to one of our favorite areas in Costa Rica with a festival celebrating this delicious fruit, who could ask for more? One can purchase the ripe berries in their natural state or any number... Continue reading
