It was a spectacular display Paul! Reminded me of a fairy house covered in mushrooms. It kind of freaked Bill out. His first words, EWE YUCK! After the initial shock wore off he saw the beauty as well. These are an edible mushroom although were told they dont have much flavor. My friend adds them to soup just before serving or they turn to grey mush. Doesnt sound appetizing to me. Ill wait to try an edible wild mushroom with more flavor and with someone who has more experience with such things. Dont want to eat something I think is edible and really isnt. :D

The day before this shot was taken I'd seen a few of these pretty white mushrooms on top of the old guarumo tree trunk. Imagine my surprise the following morning when I walked by and saw this amazing mushroom bloom. The bloom spread from the tree trunk across the hillside.... Continue reading

It was an unexpected pleasure to discover Festival Estudiantil de Las Artes. My wandering in the city yesterday led me back to central San Jose. Tuesdays are Teatro Mediodia at the National Theater and while I had decided not to see the show I wanted to visit a store not... Continue reading

I'm glad you enjoyed the post Paul. Bill and I sat at the end of the parade route and got to see something special this year. Many of the handlers had let their children lead the teams past us. We were amazed at how many young girls were doing it. I'm assuming they were family members but they could very well have been people from the crowd that were allowed to give it a go. ??? Some were were giving people the opportunity to ride in the carts. Maybe one of these years we'll participate in this parade. Then again thinking of how long the route is, probably not. Better for us to enjoy it from the sidelines. Hope you get to see one when you're back in Costa Rica on the next trip.

This beautiful, tiny little guy is a Ferruginous Pygmy-Owl (Glaucidium brasilianum). I haven't seen one in the yard in a long time. The last time I posted about one was in September 2011. It has been awhile. They aren't easy to spot. This guy was looking right at me as... Continue reading

Glad you liked the photos TurtleWoman. Wish he'd stayed around a little longer so we could learn more about him. The dogs like to chase things so it's better he was just passing through. The white dog is Maracuya,(Mara) she's our little princess. Tutti-fruity, our boy is a hunter so we have to watch him closely around wildlife. They had to be kept inside while turtle slept so they wouldn't bother him.

Saturday was band day at the festival. Honestly, having seen this many times I wasn't intending to be there. My daughter made plans and needed to be in town for several hours in the afternoon. I decided to take her in and pass time at the festival. The parade was... Continue reading

Having a hard time believing it myself but Hubby & daughter came out to confirm we definitely have another mother and baby sloth in the area. There is no way baby number two can be confused with the climbing babe we saw the other day. Baby number 2 is teeny... Continue reading

You never know what you're going to encounter when you go wandering aimlessly in the city. That's what I did earlier in the week. Took a bus into San Jose, took cab ride to take care of some business then hopped on another bus and another until I was in... Continue reading

Good morning Paul, I guess you have been away too long. Time to come back and spend some time in San Jose if you havent forgotten the way. :) Lots of changes. The Balmoral is touting itself as new because of renovations. We didnt wander into the hotel part but the restaurant is big, spacious and airy. Great vibe. Next time we go I think a glass of vino is in order. Little by little Callista is learning to let go of caring what other people think. At 18 shes light years ahead of others in some ways but shes still wanting to blend in. Trouble is, she has a brilliant essence and will never blend in so she might as well embrace it. She enjoys bubbles as much as I do at home, (almost) but in public eh, not so much. Walking around the city alone for an hour was good for her. Shes getting her bearings and gaining confidence for future travels in far off places. :D Surprisingly, it was Cal who talked me into getting on a different bus than I usually use in Central San Jose. Worst case wed have an adventure and learn a new bus route. We got lucky, for only 190 colones each we ended up on a bus that dropped us off right across the street from Teatro Nacional!!
