Looked outside at just the right moment yesterday and was able to see this beautiful yellow-crowned euphonia. I believe this may be the missus. Continue reading

A glimpse of what we've got growing around the property at the moment. A güitite (Acnistus arborescens) twig we stuck in the ground last year has turned into a beautiful, tree this year. The first leaves are just popping open. Nopal, tuna, prickly pear down to just one in the... Continue reading

I do believe the balls are nests of a small bird. They don't stop long enough for me to focus the camera lens on them when flitting about in the bamboo. The tree is on a river bank. No access to it from where I see the balls. I had to break through a tangle of dried vines to get these shots. No balls in any other trees around. This one is in just the right place to offer protection for the inhabitants.

No Paul, the powers that pulled the event together knew I had some experience making herbal medicine and thought I'd enjoy an opportunity to speak. Initially I bailed and said "NO" uh really "Hell NO!" With some encouragement from new friends and a promise of back up... I did it. Well, don't ask me what I said as I have no idea but the session was a success. I'll do a post on it soon. Lots of info to process from the weekend still. :)

Beautiful moss balls were discovered hanging through the brush on one specific tree recently. I've never seen them before. Could they be nests? As you can see by the photos they are hard to see let alone get a shot of. There isn't a way to get closer to the... Continue reading

Year after year this poor avocado tree fell at the hands of my husband with the choppeadora. When he finally realized what it was he avoided it with the mighty blade. I believe this tree was planted sometime in 2008. This is the first time we've gotten fruit. So many... Continue reading

This post came across my Facebook news feed while I was at the herbal convergence last weekend. Yesterday I went hoping to pick up a few new medicinal plants. Sadly, there wasn't much to the Exhibition and nothing for sale. I asked and was told this was it. The herb... Continue reading

Last weekend I attended Medicines from the Edge: a tropical herbal convergence. A fellow participant in the convergence was Susun Weed. Susun and I shared many moments over the weekend. One of the conversations was about Mullein. I use a tincture made from cut and sifted mullein leaf in an... Continue reading

Summer, the dry season. We're supposed to be enjoying it now. Sadly the vicious, "Christmas winds" have over stayed their welcome. Yep, I'm over them! Walks with the dogs are no longer something I enjoy. Well, I enjoy them but not dealing with the wind while doing it. I could... Continue reading

Baby Dash was in hiding for eight days. Imagine my surprise when I saw his fuzzy golden butt the other morning. A morning when I was griping about walking. The winds have been ridiculous. Really! There is no joy in walking the dogs lately. Nasty weather and no sloths. Not... Continue reading

I was certain there had to be an old blog post but when I searched, nothing. Maybe I wrote it in my head so many times I thought it was done. The green page moth (urania fulgens) aka sunset moth has an unbelievable migration. Experts say it isn't annual but... Continue reading

Thanks Joseph! Taste...nothing like Hershy's! We voted to do 80% chocolate and added vanilla, cane sugar. I know there was powdered milk that could be added too but pretty sure we didn't add any. The family didn't like it. I ate it for my health!

It's been about a month since this mature sloth has been spotted around the property. The winds finally subsided enough for him/her to come out and spend a day where I could observe. One day, no more. Always a pleasure to see a sloth! Continue reading

For the past couple of weeks I've been measuring, cutting and hand rolling ear candles. One order of 100 was delivered yesterday. Today the second 100 candle order will be completed. (crossing fingers) Candle making is a long, time consuming process. I enjoy it but to be honest, 200 candles... Continue reading

This beautiful male pileated woodpecker flew past me to meet his mate in a guarumo (cecropia) tree. (OOPS this is actually a pair of lineated woodpecker) Without glasses I couldn't see what was going on but I kept snapping pics as it isn't often I get a chance to capture... Continue reading

Participants in the Wellness in Balance Retreat and the new interns at Finca Luna Nueva got their fill of chocolate! I feel pretty confident I... Continue reading
