Thanks for asking my opinion. I feel very excited about all the possibilities that you have with your large yard! It's time to think less traditionally and imagine this area as a space to create a beautiful approach to your front door. You can begin by carving out a wide, winding walkway to your front door. Along your path you can create one or two, informal sitting areas or patios using decomposed granite, pavers, flagstone, or some other pervious material where water can percolate through. Surrounding the patios and along the perimeter of the yard you can build berms or mounds planted with native plants, ornamental grasses, succulents and a few trees that will grow tall and provide shade for you and your visitors. You can create a vegetable garden in the front yard as well. Raised beds will solve the problem of poor soil. Be creative! Within the garden beds, you can place large containers filled with colorful plants that you water with drip irrigation. Other choices include "boulder vignettes," sculptures, dry rivers...only limit is your imagination. Use recycled or repurposed materials. You don't have to spend a lot of money to make a statement! The point is that you don't have to plant every square inch that previously had lawn growing on it. Good luck and keep us posted on your progress. Shirley Bovshow
