James’ interviews were not especially revealing, but I thought one quote he offered was pretty interesting. He was asked about sharing the spotlight with Dwayne Wade, and he basically said he did not think there would need to be “sharing.”... Continue »

Just as the evening ended I dropped my phone into the toilet, and the pictures I had been so careful to take fizzled and drowned. But how could the photographs possibly capture this magical day? I asked Jeremy Stanton to roast a pig for Michael’s birthday. I asked Cathy Grier to bring her blues band to play. I asked all... Continue »

With my first week of unemployment looming, I did what any girl in my position would do: agreed to live in a stranger's one bedroom apartment and watch not one, but two cats. For a week. In Long Beach. I... Continue »

The final playlist for The Kids Are All Right's soundtrack was released Friday on Facebook, mixing current indie-rock bands and classics, blogs Playlist. The soundtrack mixes styles and is notably bicoastal, with archetypal L.A. punk band X singing "Los Angeles" while up-to-the-second Brooklyn-based MGMT contribute their spacey "The Youth." The... This is the best angle of the beginning of the work on my right arm. We did four and a half hours on Saturday. I think it'll probably end up being somewhere around 20, my tattoo artist is pretty fast. There's another magnolia further down on my arm that you can't see in this shot. This tattoo is sort of a memorial tattoo for my father. When it's finished it'll have three magnolias, a hummingbird, a red tailed hawk, tree blossoms, and a portrait of my mom and dad from the 60s. It's already incredibly beautiful and we're only a... Continue »

Just back from the farmers market. Still fairly sparse up here, but it was so good to be walking among all those people with dirt under their fingernails. I was hoping for sour cherries. Alas, I'll have to wait until next week. But the apricots and sugar snaps are lovely, and I got some great local liverwurst and kale. Dinner... Continue »

So I know hot pants are apparently in style right now, which I completely disagree with. They look good on about -2% of the population. They are basically thicker underwear and since when were underwear okay to wear in public? Didn't we all learn our lesson from the Seinfeld episode with the woman in the bra top? There is only one possible scenario in which hot pants in public can be a good idea...when you choose them over wearing NO pants. Why a young lady (if you can even call her that) walking in South of Market felt it was... Continue »

Here's a snippet: The hand-sewn collage-paintings of Diana Guerrero-Maciá weave together these variegated cultural threads; they're contemporary while nodding to history Also take a look at Fiberarts magazine's mention of the show.
