Rhetoric
A friend recently showed me a site called American Rhetoric, which archives speeches from American history, both as text and (where available), as .mp3 files. They also have some movie speeches, although this portion of the site seems less developed than the historical section. Go over and ...

Brooklyn is Burning
Checking out the warehouse fire in Greenpoint, Brooklyn from my rooftop. "The fire blackened the sky above northern Brooklyn with thick smoke shot through at its base with bright flames a block deep. The plume could be seen for miles" - The New York Times.
agreed. 100%.
"You have to suffer for style."
I'm feeling a bit flabbergasted after reading about Tom Wolfe's Cadillac in The New York Times. There's a wealth of information included in this article, but I am most surprised to learn that Tom Wolfe reads Dubs magazine. I wonder if he's reading this month's article about Verne Troyer's car...
I'd rather buy a new ipod or a psp than that for $350.
$350
Sony said that their eReader would be debuting between $300 and $400. Sony's online store, Sony Style, is listing the price as $350, so right on the mark. Ultimately I think that this is just too high. I am an excited eBook fan, I've used and loved the eInk display on their Libre, and I st...
on the blog as supplement front, malcolm gladwell recently started a blog for this very purpose:
"I have come (belatedly) to the conclusion that a blog can be a very valuable supplement to my books and the writing I do for the New Yorker."

Sam Vs. Matt; Topic #2: Niche Books
The topic this time around? Niche books. With an overabundance of books in the market, it’s easier than ever to find a book that appeals to you, and harder than ever to find the time to read them all. The internet provides information in shorter snippets, allowing people to explore interests of...
Ohhh! I couldn't agree with Sicha more. This is the point I was trying to make in Sam Vs. Matt, but this is done more eloquently.
“As for blogs taking over big media in the next five years? Fine, sure,” he added. “But where are the beginnings of that? Where is the reporting? Where is the reliability? The rah-rah blogosphere crowd are apparently ready to live in a world without war reporting, without investigative reporting, without nearly any of the things we depend on newspapers for. The world of blogs is like an entire newspaper composed of op-eds and letters and wire service feeds. And they’re all excited about the global reach of blogs? Right, tell it to China.”
Article on blogs on the FT Times website, "Time for the last post"
Interesting article on blogs from the weekend edition of FT Times. Entitled, "Time for the last post," the article takes a more cynical look at blogs than most recent articles (like last week's cover story in New York Magazine, for example). The FT Times article takes the point of view that, ins...

jumping into the frey
I'd been really trying to sit out the whole "A Million Little Pieces" debate/debacle, but after yesterday's Oprah show where she pulled the rug out from under Frey, I just wanted to put down a few thoughts... To begin, I've got to say that I suspected Frey was a fraud since I first heard about h...
oh! i haven't, but it's now on my list.
Sun and Fun's review of Scott Turow's "Ordinary Heroes"
Check out this blog's review of Ordinary Heroes over here. Here's a sneak peek: "I can now declare that "Ordinary Heroes" is not only cinema-worthy, it is entirely Oscar-worthy, that is, if the project ends up in the hands of a high-caliber director.' And if you're into King Kong (and I...
