Is it me, or is this not a great reason to cancel a show? Some of my most memorable concert moments were when an artist overcame technical adversity - feedback, bad weather, even no power - and continued the show. Apparently these bands see things differently. Here's the story: The headliners for the Rockstar Uproar Festival were unable to play at an August 23rd show at the Mount Airy Casino, citing production issues. In a post on their Facebook page, Godsmack, one of the headliners for the festival, wrote: "As some of you may heard: Unfortunately none of the main... Continue reading

By Jhoni Jackson from the SonicBids Blog. There’s no arguing about the importance of social media in expanding and maintaining a fanbase. It's common knowledge that all of the mainstay platforms – Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram – are crucial tools, albeit each with its own particular uses. What's maybe less widely understood, though, is that it's not just listeners who are affected by your band’s online presence. It plays a role in your chances of getting press, too. Unsurprisingly, the degree of influence varies depending on the outlet in question. After personally polling a handful of music writers, a few... Continue reading

Today Eventbrite released a research report on music festivals in the U.S. Working with Mashwork, they analyzed online conversation to identify the "25 Most Buzzed About Music Festivals" and what the fans were talking about at the time. Many of the social media conversations occur before and after the events and a surprising number involve people not at the events. Clearly a lot to consider if you're interested in the relationship between social media and real world events as well as the growing music festival scene. Ratings for a shock free MTV Video Music Awards fell sharply on Sunday. According to Nielsen surveys, the awards telecast was down 18% to 8.3 million viewer. Simulcasts on MTV, MTV2, VH1, and Logo TV along with all repeats delivered as total 13.7 million. This year's VMA's delivered more tweets than viewers: 12.6 million. Some attribute the drop to a relatively tame broadcast devoid of moment like last year's Milyey Cyrus twerking extravaganza. How PG-13 was the broadcast? Conservative watchdogs the Parents Television Council shared that “MTV seems to have toned down” the show. Related articles Spotify, MTV/VH1/CMT Announce Major... Continue reading

Aparently the bond between celebirty and fan does not extend to the olfactory receptors. Cosmetics giant Elizabeth Arden reported their largest quarterly loss and laid the lion's share of the blame for said losses at Taylor Swift and Justin Bieber's feet. The company lost $155.9 million in the three months ended June 30 while sales dropped by 28.4 per cent to $191.7 million for the quarter, losses in part driven by what the company says are declining sales in celebrity fragrances. Total sales for the company dropped by 13.4 percent in the year ended June 30 with half of that... Continue reading

Australian based music streamer Songl, which formerly launched just last year, has shut down. Songl was a joint venture between Sony Music, Universal Music and investors Southern Cross Austereo (SCA). Australia has proven to be a particularly tough market for music streamers to crack with Deezer exiting downunder earlier this year. “Songl was a consumer-facing music streaming service we have jointly been committed to for the past two years," the partners said in a statement. "However, all stakeholders have moved their focus from this service into other music and content-based commitments that will enable each stakeholder to diversify their offering.... Continue reading

Austin-based promoters C3 Presents, the company behind the Lollapalooza and Austin City Limits festivals, suffered a major data breach last week. The breach appears to have occured following the physical theft of one of C3's internal servers in June and that the server appeared to be targeted by the thieves for its physical value rather than the value of the data it contained. The company said that the data compromised in the theft "affected only present and former employees, independent contractors, and some third parties. This does not affect any ticket holders who purchased tickets for C3 events through Front... Continue reading
