Spotify is reportedly in talks to raise an additional $500 to $600 million in funding which could delay a rumored iPO until 2016. The new investments would put the total funds raised by music streamer at more than 1$ billion. No music industry story has gotten more play in the last week than Zoe Keating's struggle with YouTube. According to notices filed in recent days in the Federal Register, SoundExchange is auditing a number of digital broadcasters including CBS owned Last.fm, iHeartRadio and Live365. Under rules set by the Copyright Royalty Board, SoundExchange can choose to to audit any digital music service; and has a history of selecting a few each year for year. While this year's choices could be seen as routine, they are likely not made randomly. (UPDATED) Just 5 days after Google, Apple's Beats, Sony, Rdio, Songza, Slacker and Grooveshark were served with simultaneously filed lawsuits alleging exploitation of pre-1972 sound recordings without license or payment, the case against music streamer Rdio has been dismissed. Attorneys, on behalf of Zenbu Media - the owners of recordings from The Flying Burrito Brothers, Hot Tuna, the New Riders of the Purple Sage and others - filed the lawsuits and requested class action status. There were audible moans when iTunes dropped their popular free weekly download feature. Now Apple has responded with the launch of Free On iTunes a hub for free music, TV and film downloads. Apple has obtained a patent that could enable music and video sharing and along with other features by adding a new layer of digital rights management (DRM). "The systems and methods provide an encrypted copy of a digital content unit to a first user and transcript the encrypted copy to generate the legitimate copy to a second user," reads the patent that Apple says could reduce both piracy and bandwidth costs.
