To date, know one has built and sustained a popular music based social network. But that is exactly what SFX owned EDM hub Beatport hopes to to with has acquired music based social network Listn. The startup's team will shutter Listn over the next two weeks and then join Beatport. Once there, they will be charged with building a social network that serves Beatport's large community of EDM fans. The exact details of the deal weren't shared, but Listn founder and CEO Mike Schmidt told Pando that it was a seven-figure deal and that the company's early investors "all made... Continue reading

Rhapsody has always been music streaming's quiet competitor. They were among the first to the party, but have since have avoided splashy moves - no big ad campaigns or free music listening. Instead, they forged telecom partnerships both in the US and overseas, and continued to improve their offering. With more than 2 million subscribers and no revenue draining free tier, Rhapsody and their international brand Napster's slow and steady strategy apparently is working well enough that it was time to bring in a CEO. The company has been without a CEO since a 2013 executive shake up. Yesterday, Rhapsody... Continue reading

Apple introduced the first iPod 13 years ago today on October 23, 2001. It was 8 1/2 months after the Mac only version of iTunes had been released. While there were other digital music services and players already on the market, the seamless coupling of iTunes and the iPod marked the official beginning or the digital music revolution. As Steve Jobs said that day: "Music is part of everybody's life, everyone! Music's been around for ever (and) it will always be around. This is not a speculative market. And because its part of everybody's life, it's a very large target... Continue reading

[UPDATED] Audio hardware maker Jawbone has debuted Drop. The app plays instant mix based on your favorite songs from Spotify or Rdio, and take song requests from your friends through Twitter. Users reply back with a song they want to play. It appears to be based on Playground.fm which Jawbone acquired last year. Playground's original site is now offline. Drop was created using Twitter’s new Fabric SDK, which enables developers to more easily connect Twitter to other services - in this case Rdio or Spotify. So far the app is only available in iOS, Here is how Jawbone describes the... Continue reading

By Peter Getty from PeterGettyMusic.com Man, I loved iTunes (and, of course, the iPod) when it first came out. After toying with it for about two minutes, I knew I was done with my PC. I've treated my iTunes like an extremely exclusive club ever since, and I give its members the red carpet treatment. I go to some lengths to track down the best copies of the original artwork, the correct lyrics, the proper year of release and the composers - information that was left out or, in the case of release date and artwork, very often incorrect in... The race to the bottom is on... Yesterday, Spotify introduced a family plan that allows Premium subscribers to add up to 4 "family" members to their plan for just $5 per month. Each gets their own distinct and fully functional Spoitfy Premium account for half the usual $10. There are also increasing rumors that Apple is pushing record labels for a $5 monthly price point, as it seeks to launch an expanded music subscription service based on recently purchased Beats Music. If the labels allow one music service to offer $5 subscriptions, it will have to allow all of their... Continue reading

The Crowd-funding market is pretty well saturated these days, but there's always room for innovation and improvemet, right? The folks at Rocket Fuel seem to think so - and perhaps they're onto something. The bread and butter of this new platform is in its sustainable career model. Rather than advocating the raising of funds for a specific item or event, they're encouraging artists (and fans) to be thinking long term by contributing regular donations over a set period of time. By encouraging this type of financial contributions, the fans feel less pressure to make large donations, thus are perhaps more... Continue reading

TuneCore has announced the launch of YouTube Money, a monetization and collection service for music videos. Music videos are estimated to drive nearly 40% of all views on YouTube and a survey of TuneCore artists showed they now consider YouTube to be the third most important point of distribution for their music, behind only iTunes and Spotify. Ironically, or perhaps strategically, TuneCore's YouTube Money competes with Audiam, a YouTube monetization service launched last year by Jeff Price and Peter Wells, TuneCore co-founders who exited the flat fee music distributor in 2012. With both services, artists can collect a percentage of... Continue reading

The future of music sales may be bleaker than we thought. 2014 is now 10 months old and not one album released this year has gone platinum. By comparison, at this point last year, 5 albums had gone platinum. The only album to reach 1 million in sales this year has been the Frozen soundtrack, which was released in 2013. In fact, this year's two other top sellers - Eric Curch and Lorde - we released last year and have still sold well under 1 million. Single sales are not much better. In 2014 only 60 songs have sold more... Continue reading

Rightsholders have accused Google of promoting piracy since the dawn of search. The online giant's efforts to end the practice have been frustratingly incremental. But they took several steps forward with some significant announcements over the last few days that include downgraded search results for pirate sites and upgraded ad units that promote music and other media better. In 2012, Google announced they'd downrank sites which received a large number of valid DMCA notices. They now say they’ve :refined the signal in ways we expect to visibly affect the rankings of some of the most notorious sites." The update will... Continue reading
