Just when we thought he'd joined the 21st century, Prince has pulled his profiles off both Twitter and Facebook. Sometime between Monday and Tuesday, Prince's @3rdEyeGirl Twitter account and his Facebook pages suddenly went dark. As has been the case for month's, virtually all of Prince's videos are also absent from YouTube and Vevo. Only "Breakfast Can Wait" was up on Vevo af of Wednesday morning. So far, there's no news from the Prince camp, as to why he pulled the social plug now. Some online are speculating that self-described luddite only went on social media to promote his last... We live in an age where feedback can be garnered easily for musicians. Artists can post a song on YouTube and ask people to comment, rate and subscribe. Artists can send out tweets to check out a new song and get intstant feedback. But how do we quantify feedback on those platforms? How do we make sure that our songs are being heard by the right people that can give the best feedback? Brian Hazard has done leg work to give a comprehensive look on websites designed to give musicians the feedback that they are looking for in their music.... Continue reading

Spotify released its 2013 financial report which showed both rapidly growing revenue and significant net losses. Revenue grew 73% from 2012’s €430.3 to €746.9 million or $931 million USD last year. But losses also rose 16% to $116 million in 2013. The new report covers global results for all territories including the UK and France, both whom recently reported that their global operations were in the black. One bright spot is that Spotfy's “cost of revenue” (mostly royalties paid to rightsholders) fell from 90.5% of revenue in 2012 tp 82.5% of revenue in 2013. "We believe that music has mass... [UPDATED] By Mike Gendel. As 2014 comes to a close, musicians can find little to be optimistic about. The decline in sales continues and it appears that the only album that will have platinum sales this year will be Taylor Swift’s 1989. By this time last year, we had only five platinum releases and according to some, none of them would have been in the top 10 sellers just a decade earlier. The many problems facing independent musicians are growing. The ability to break from the old record label system was seen as liberating. Many music observers saw the rise... Continue reading

Audio recordings can easily be distinguished by their quality. If you have the same person record the same thing in two different setttings, the end result can be drastic. External factors like outside noises can harm the recording. In addition, if an audio engineer does not have the correct skills to make the recording sound as best as it can, the final product can be unpolished and unprofessional. Chris Meloni has learned a thing or two about this and shares his knowledge with us today on MusicThinkTank.com The world of voice over recording is all about conveying a particular feeling... T-Mobile today added 14 streaming music apps, doubling the services eligible for its data-free Music Freedom program. While not exactly popular with net neutrality advocates, T-Mobile says their "streaming doesn't count against your data plan" service is a big hit with subscribers. According to T-Mobile, the number of their customers streaming music each day has jumped nearly 300%; and they’re streaming 66 million songs per day − 200 terabytes of data per day. In a recent survey of U.S. wireless users, 1 in 4 said that Music Freedom is a key reason they’ve switched or would switch to the T-Mobile.... Continue reading

It was not your typical acceptance speech from music's latest carefully scripted darling at last night's American Music Awards. Taylor Swift chose to use part of her precious podium time to defend the album and the value of music: "By going out and investing in music and albums you're saying you beleive in the same things I believe in - that music is valuable, and that music should be consumed as albums, and that albums should be consumed as art and appreciated." By Emily White of Whitesmith Entertainment & Dreamfuel Bandcamp is a platform I came across by accident in 2008. A platform I was seeking nonetheless, by asking everyone around me “Why isn’t there a way to sell music directly to fans easily in a way that makes sense?” A colleague had mentioned a platform with the name Band in it. I googled like crazy until I landed on Bandcamp (only to find out later the colleague had been referring to something else altogether). I emailed the contact on the site and instantly receive a response from Bandcamp’s founder, Ethan Diamond.... Continue reading

Just days after taking Taylor Swift to task for removing her music from Spotify, musician and activist Billy Bragg has apologized and offered her his "full support." More than about free streaming music, Bragg's criticism had been more about why he believed to Swift's decision to 'secretly' side with Google and YouTube over Spotify. "Google are going after Spotify and Taylor Swift has just chosen sides," wrote Bragg. But after learning that most of Swift's music had also been kept off YouTube's new Music Key, he quickly changed his tune. "I want to apologise to Taylor Swift for accusing her... Continue reading

By Mark Mulligan on Music Industry Blog The Financial Times yesterday reported that Apple is planning on integrating Beats Music into an iOS update as early as the first quarter of 2015. Which means the entire base of Apple’s 500 odd million iOS devices suddenly become Apple’s acquisition funnel. As I wrote back in May, this was always the strategy Apple was most likely to pursue. Of course being available to 500 iTunes customers is not anything like converting them all. Just ask U2. But it does give Beats Music – if Apple keep the name – a reach like... Continue reading

By Amy Sciarretto on Sonicbids Blog As my recent "Ask a Publicist" article explained, having a publicist is an essential tool for your band's growth and success. But not every band can afford the spend, depending on where they are in their development. So if you're not signed to a label with in-house PR, relax. You are not S.O.L. There are ways to do your own PR and get some placements on a limited level so you can lay the foundation and make inroads in the media before a trained PR pro, with limitless contacts, steps in and takes over....
