Infamous hacker cooperative Anonymous appears to have forced Warner Music Group's Atlantic Records to set a release date for Lupe Fiasco's long delayed album "Tetsuo And Youthor;" and some evidence hints at Lupe being in on the plan. Thursday, Anonymous went on Twitter and gave Atlantic an ultimatum - either give the album a release date within 24 hours watch out. Then, just before 8PM, Atlantic tweeted this: On the musician's official blog, there was jubilation and an interesting piece of Fiasco/Atlantic history: "The weirdest part about this whole situation is that it happened on the 4th anniversary of Fiasco Friday,... I wanted to have as many high points this last week at Hypebot as possible. Closing with a piece on Josh Urban is about as high a point as I could reach even though most of you probably haven't heard of him. He's taking some basic ideas, using them to fuel interactions with the public and finding unique ways of building community through music. Urban's projects include online community participation and he wants you to know that you're invited to participate in this year's Kindness Exchange. I knew I'd written about Josh Urban a few times now but this actually... Continue reading

It's been almost 2 years since Apple released iTunes 11, so expectations were high for the unveiling of iTunes 12. While there are some major changes, users won't find anything radical in iTunes 12, but its all wrapped in a redesigned package that more closely resembles Apple's current design sensibilities. the release coincides with the debut of Apple's OS X 10.10 Yosemite. iTunes 12 has a sleek new look and seems fatser and easier to use. Users will find playlisting simpler and its much easier to switch between browsing a music library and to the iTunes Store. A new Recents... Continue reading

Much was made when Beats Music announced a deal with AT&T for the telecom giant to market and bill the then fledgling music subscription service. Fast forward about 10 months and a $3+ billion Beats purchase by Apple and the AT&T deal is no more. Current AT&T Beats Music subscribers are unaffected. MacRumors, who first spotted the change, got this comment from AT&T: "There haven’t been any changes for AT&T customers who currently have the Beats Music family plan or who are within their free trial period. New subscribers can still get Beats Music through their app store or atbeatsmusic.com."... Continue reading

Last night Will.i.am introduced the debut products from his new company i.am+. Catching the most attention is the PULS smartband (I'm calling it a smartcuff) based on the concept of a cuff rather than a watch. From there on out it's a unique wearable that's not a watch, supports calls and texting without a phone and can connect with a range of wearables including a backpack, a jacket and shoes though info's slim on that part. Plus it plays music. Will.i.am's debut of PULS at Dreamforce has gotten the tech press worked up. It's more than a smartband and Will.i.am... Continue reading

Bono has admitted that the band's free iTunes album release was motivated in part by "a drop of megalomania." His response came in reply to a question from a Facebook fan during U2's video Q & A for the social network. As his bandmates chuckled behind him, Bono replied to Facebook user Harriet Madeline Jobson who wrote, "Can you please never release an album on iTunes that automatically downloads to people's playlists ever again? It's really rude." Bono replied: "I'm sorry about that. I had this beautiful idea... might have got carried away with it ourselves. Artists are prone to... Continue reading

Steve "Renman" Rennie is likely best known as the music manager for Incubus who he's worked with from their initial record deal. Lately more are getting to know him through his online educational activities teaching new comers about the music business. I spoke with Rennie yesterday and found out that his interest in education isn't just a hobby but is set to become the third major chapter in his life story. He was kind enough to answer my very basic questions as he's been more than happy to do for all sorts of emerging musicians. Steve Rennie is primarily associated... Continue reading

Some people might be surprised that I basically ditch complex and detailed language developed by researchers and practitioners that appears designed to clarify communication about communication. Cause when I start ranting about people taking a useful word like "crowdfunding" and trying to attach divergent meanings that muddy the water, I'm arguing for maintaining clarity in communication. But the language of communication professionals is compartmentalized and does not support the people for whom I write, DIY/indie musicians and their teams. Why Would I Take My Lead From Propagandists? Let's turn to an industry marketing dictionary and see how it defines "marketing":... Continue reading

Each new season brings a new "Teens On Facebook" survey. But the latest Piper Jaffrey study of 7200 teens age 12-19 confirms a trend we've seen brewing since last year - teens are leaving Facebook. As of last month, less than half answered yes when asked if they use the social giant. Between the spring of this year and now, teen Facebook use fell from 72% to 45%, according to Piper Jaffrey. This graphic shows the dramatic drop and hints at how teen social time is shifting: Read the full report here. Continue reading
