Virgin Mobile FreeFest, the one day music festival produced by Seth Hurwitz IMP Productions, has ended its run. The festival, originally held at the Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore in 2006, moved to the Merriweather Post Pavilion five years ago and in the wake of the financial crisis went 'free', offering tickets in exchange for donations to festival sponsor Virgin Mobile’s RE*Generation initiative to help homeless youth, or for volunteer work. New York based music streaming service Saavn is close to raising $30-40 million in a deal reportedly led by Hong Kong-based hedge fund Steadview Capital, according to the Economic Times. Saavn specializes in streaming music to the Hindi community and has a catalog of 1.1 million songs. Initial Saavn backers were Tiger Global Management and several angel investors. Booking agency ICM Partners, software developer Originate and lawyers and consultant Manatt, Phelps & Phillips have launched O Labs, a joint venture to incubate and fund media and technology startups. Startups chosen with have access to the expertise and contacts of all three partners. O Labs will be based in LA and hopes to work with 3-5 companies each year. Event organizers have announced that R&B artist R. Kelly will no longer be performing at the Fashion Meets Music Festival (FMMF). R. Kelly was set to headline the event on August 29th, but 'mutually' agreed with festival organizers to step out of the lineup in the wake of protests over the performer's past legal troubles in connection with accusations of sexual impropriety with minors. Each 'song' is named after a prominent music industry figure, mostly in the digital music realm. Getting Shocked's silent treatment are Chris Harrison (Pandora). Utah Republican Representative Jason Chaffetz believes that D.C. autonomy is unconstitutional and led the charge to roll back gay marriage there. Spotify has upgraded its iOS app adding an equalizer. There are 22 presets for specifc genres including electronic, hip-hop and classical; or users can manually chose their own equalizer settings. Rhapsody announced this morning that its has more than 2 million paid subscribers globally across its Rhapsody, Napster, recently launched UnRadio services. It's a significant milestone for the music streamer, who has built its user base differently than most of its competitors; favoring limited free trials over virtually unlimited profit-killing free music services. Independent music global rights agency Merlin has lowered its fees yet again. After a 50% drop on 2013, Merlin today announced another 17% reduction. As of June 1, the agency’s administration fees relating to commercial deals have been reduced from 3% to 2.5%, or 3.9% to 3.25% for Merlin members who are not members of local Independent Trade Associations. Apple's $3 billion deal to purchase Beats Electronics and Beats Music has received the approval of the European Union Commission. The trade regulators found that Apple and Beats are no dominate players in the headphone category in Europe, and what they sell is too varied to be considered closely competitive, according to TechCrunch.
