I used to argue a lot with my mother. It was only when I lost her that I realized how much time was lost over trivial matters. Sometimes we behave as if we're going to live for ever. I wish I had made an effort to understand her like you did with your mother.
My Mother
My mother and I don't always get along very well. More often than not, it seems that one of us is saying the wrong thing, presses the wrong buttons and, as a result, our conversations tend to be quite explosive! Yet, in our heart of hearts, we know that we love each other dearly. I always felt, ...

Sunday Outing - Agios Theodoros
Today was one of those lovely, sunny days in early spring, albeit a bit windy. It was one of those days which make you unwilling to stay indoors, so Alkis and I decided to spend it in the nearby countryside. Agios Theodoros Beach Agios Theodoros Beach Agios Theodoros Beach Agio...

Here in Lemesos, the Carnival for us is more than a tradition. It is part of our city and our lifestyle. It is a time we all look forward to soon after the New Year festivities and , unlike in other cities in Cyprus, we all dress up and have fun. This year it's going to be a great way to forget our problems for a while and be merry, especially at these difficult times of financial crisis our country is going through.
The Carnival in Lemesos
The Carnival in Lemesos dates back to antiquity and is closely related to the history of the Greeks. as it is linked to the Dionysian Festivals called the "Dionysia". During these festivals, a contest was held amongst the three great dramatists of Ancient Greece : Sofocles, Aeschylous and Euripi...

I was at work on Valentine's day when I received a rose and an unsigned Valentine's card inviting me to dinner at my home address! When I got back home from work, I realised that my husband had cooked dinner for us which he served in the candlelit dining-room. At first he served the wine and then went on to say that the kids had already eaten dinner and gone to bed! It was my best Valentine's day ever!
Valentine's Dinner at the Golden Bay
For yet another year, Valentine's Dinner at the Golden Bay Beach Hotel was a very special event set in the Les Etoiles Restaurant. The Maître d'Hôtel, Mr Kyriacos Shiakallis, led us to our table. He is by far the best Maître D' in Cyprus! After a long day at work, I loved the red rose offered t...

February in Cyprus
February arrived in Cyprus with a huge grin and gorgeous sunny days. I could almost smell Spring in the cool breeze coming from the sea, flirting with my veranda throughout the weekend and spoiling us with mild temperatures rising to 20 degrees celsius on the coast. But just about as I was start...

Well, that sounds like a great holiday to begin the new year. I live so near Paphos and rarely visit. I guess I'll never learn to appreciate travelling to places next door even if they are so very different. But living on the coast makes me want to travel to the mountains when I have a weekend off work, which is rare these days. Happy New year!
Paphos - January 2013
It's amazing how this holiday season has just flown by. A Christmas holiday in London and a few days in Paphos to welcome the New Year were more than enough for me to relax, recharge the batteries and begin the new term at school tomorrow. After London where Alkis and I spent a lot of time walki...

It's been a family tradition for years to attend church every Sunday and to this day, if I don't work on Sunday morning, we all get up early and go to church. I know God is in us and everywhere but going to church allows me and my family to have a more direct communication with God. And it's a wonderful experience.
The Power of Prayer
The Crucifixion I am a christian, a Greek Orthodox, and I solemnly observe our religious events and ceremonies. I am not a very religious person, though, in the sense that I rarely go to church and I only fast during the Holy Week before Easter. Does that make me a sinner? I've often ...

I will bookmark your wonderful post and try to do all these great things next time I have a long holiday...except scuba diving maybe! Another great thing you can do in Cyprus, especially if you live in Lemesos, is take a swim at one of our great beaches and about an hour later ski in Troodos. This is not possible every year but many times in March, we get warm weather on the coast and snow in the mountains. I've never tried it myself cos I don't ski, but in early March I joined some friends who are excellent swimmers and excellent skiers. We spent the morning on the beach, by 12:00 pm we were at Troodos Ski resort and I watched them ski in their swimming costumes! This must be fun!
