A Race Against Time
by Pete Bodo As I write this, Xavier Malisse is preparing to take the court against Andy Murray at the Rogers Cup tournament in Toronto. By the time you read this post, the match may well be over. I wouldn't be shocked by an upset in this one, because Malisse is in the throes of a makeover...
Lol@ how Dolly is out bashing Berdych ;-)

Arun,
I am not exactly a fan of Berdych. But he is the one capable of sending the bungler home, incase S&V legend does the 'hare' bit against the Swiss 'tortoise' ;-)

I love the way Dolgopolov plays but if he wins he will definitely fold against the Basel Bungler. Berdych has a better chance of sending him home.

Ofcourse you can critisize ....et all. it would be rediulous to say otherwise. My only issue is with the excessiveness of it. Even then I was only discussing it with a fellow poster. I categorically addressesd my post to Sharon if I am not mistaken. Are you saying I cannot discuss something with a fellow poster?
The irony of it is that (you were atleast polite in your pov) some posters got all excited and started preaching about 'making fuss' while doing exactly that.. 'making fuss' about some posters opinion of someone else's post.

"Some people humour these trollish posters which only encourages them to post more and it tends to make the Rafa fans defensive and feeling like they have to defend Rafa. Would be nice if they could be ignored and the Rafa people could just post their ups and downs and cheers and good wishes without having to explain their reasons for Rafa being their favourite player"
Spot on Sharon. Couldn't agree with you more. Most people here have a funny notion that a Troll = Someone with a wierd name, who rarely posts and only posts to bash a player. There are some regulars here who do a lot more player bashing (downright making a career out of it) than even your garden variety troll.
Sad part is some find it funny. For the life of me I cant. May be my sense of humour is poor. Guess I need to attend some classes ;-) Cause for the life of me I cant seem to comprehend how the same joke told a thousand times continues to be funny.
Posting here is overrated. Lurking/scrolling is usually better.

Wanted: An American Renewal
by Pete Bodo It was a pleasure to see American players make their presence felt at the ATP event in Atlanta last week. The hard-court season is an eight-week affair ending with the championship matches at the U.S. Open, which makes this a two-month celebration of the game in the U.S.—a plea...
SamE,
You need to back up your serve with some consistant ground strokes, volleying and most importantly, you should be strong upstairs. Serve can only take you so far. May be thats her(Groth's) problem.
Are You Ready for Some Football?
Hey everyone, Pete's up north in Andes with no internet—which is probably just the way he likes it. Power problems, he said. Can the dude catch a break? But he wanted me to give you a place to talk tennis, as we have four events going on around the globe. Couple of comments, while I'm here: Fi...

Yes his serve improved a bit, and even muzz couldnt do much. It was his return of serve that has improved a lot during the last 3-4 matches. never saw Rafa returning so well. imagine breaking Bird in every set? When was the last time Bird played a match where he didnt play a TB....lol

Its not the dive per se, its the heart behind the dive to not give up is what is similar in both men and thats what attracts me. I dont know if you remember, the Nalby-Rafa match last year but that is one prime example of how how almost everyone on the planet gave up including uncle Toni and Rafito still went on to win it after saving 5 match points. Do note that till then he was blown away be Nalby twice.
From where he found the mental strength to try even at that juncture is beyond me and thats what puts him over more or less anyone who ever played the game IMO.

My Tennis watching history is IDENTICAL to yours and in 2005 I was told about the young 'un who is the only guy stopping Roger domination....and I saw Becker qualities in him (the full stretch dives and all) and as they say the rest is history...
Believe me it was exactly like yours...watched becker and edberg more a fan of becker and then WTA and then completely stopped during the pete/agassi era and started watching again in 2005 with Rafito.

I remember during the Rafa-Petz match where there was an out-in call and Rafa after confirming with the umpire and Rafa (kind of a reflex action) then asked uncle Toni. That must have pissed of the umpire and thats why I think he later gave that coaching warning. I know it was not done in a way to undermine the umpire and done more as involuntary reaction but these are the things you should be careful about.

Hi AM,
I know what you are saying. I do think his parents/family caused much damage to Nole's popularity.
While we are on the subject, I think uncle Toni should also tone it down a bit. And Rafa should stop looking at his box when he wishes to use the hawkeye. He does it very rarely but he does it once in a while. When u r #1, certain things are expected of you. In my book yelling at the umpire or even at your opponent is still ok but looking at your box for hawkeye is a strict no-no.

Neilintoronto, could it be that Rafito is the eternal no.2 guy even if his ranking says 1? If thats the case I can understand your point cuase I kind of feel the same way sometimes.

I used to and still do like Nole a lot. His "The King is dead...." thing probably didnt sit well with Roger fans but that one thing and his parents aside he was a likable guy. Man I remember that match where Rafa beat him in the finals and he was asked to impersonate Rafa, infront of Rafa. It was fun. He was the brat but since he and Rafa had so many memorable matches I kind of became a fan of his.

Howdy, everyone. Today is catch-up day at the office. Tomorrow I'll empty my mental outbox with random thoughts, impressions and experiences from my stint at Wimbledon. I may not get to post tomorrow on Matt Harvey, the Wimbledon poet, with whom I had a visit last week, but that too will get...
Sherlock,
Well it was like being restricted to first base after having been to the second/third base...a little disappointing/anti-climatic after Muzz and Sod matches. Like I said the 1st set was tidy but the 1st game of the 2nd set and Rafitos 1 hour between points was a tad boring I say. And he started spraying with his FH. I am overjoyed he won....but the match had no 'excitement' other than being a final.
We some how have this mindset that a GS final should have some ups and downs unlike a 1st round match which can be as boring as you want and its all right. So in that sense, I dont think it was a great match.

Sherlock, I hope you didnt mean the final when you said last 2 matches. I think Sod Muzz matches were good. The finals was so boring, even Rafito was bored out of his skull after the 1st set he started spraying FH errors all over the place.
His Serve and ROS were on though. Good to see that.
