So according to the plan Mary and I came up with, we should be on liquids only by this point. I don't know if it's because we haven't been motivated enough, or not communicating/encouraging each other as much as we should be, or some other reason, but I'm not on liquids, and I don't think she is either. I have tried to eat only fruit for the past few days, and have succeeded only in eating nothing but fruit until dinner, then having a small dinner. But this isn't exactly a failure, I think. I's good to eat more fruit,... Continue reading

So according to the plan Mary and I came up with, we're cutting back our food intake with a goal of being on just liquids by this weekend. So far (and it's been like 24 hours) Mary is totally kicking my weight-loss butt, and has lost twice as much as I did at the beginning of my first fast. I'm really impressed! And this gives me even more motivation to buckle down and stick to the plan. I feel like the hardest part of fasting is starting out, because you feel hungry. But the initial drop in weight feels pretty... Continue reading

My weekend getaway to Arcata with Mary was a huge success. We saw the important people in our lives that we wanted to see, enjoyed doing what young college-town people do on the weekend, had a whole rainy day of girly shopping, went out for a beautiful sushi dinner, and had about 12 hours of girl talk while driving up and down highway 101. I knew I would probably let myself go this weekend, as far as eating and drinking went, and indeed I did exactly that. I don't think I need to go into specific detail regarding this complete... So it's been two weeks, and I'm still doing whatever it is that I'm doing. I admit that I have fallen off the wagon, so to speak, and haven't been sticking to my "small portions of fruit and veg" plan as much as I should be. However, I have kept in mind my goals for this fast/diet/whatever, and have been eating healthy and drinking as much water as I can manage. I have gradually incorporated dairy back into my diet, and have had fish and a little bit of meat (which I have missed dearly). I mean, of course fish... Continue reading

Woke up bright and early yesterday (more like 10:00, but that's okay). Dad and Grampy went out wine tasting, and I was home alone for a while. It's funny to go from living with a significant other to living with the family again (Micah's doing well by the way, for those who know and love the man). When you live with someone, you're kind of like one person, and what you do affects them like they affect you. But with multiple people, it's sort of every man for himself, in a good way. I cleaned my room and watched Wife... Continue reading

The past couple of days I have been working late and haven't posted, so I'll catch up just a little bit. Weighed in at having lost 15 lbs (you'll notice I've sneakily avoided saying how much I weigh so far) for the past 3 days, so it seems I have reached a plateau. I'm fine with that, but it's very encouraging to see the weight change when I weight myself every day, so I'm going to see if I can drink mostly water and juice and avoid food until dinner tonight. I'm going to my mom's house to (hopefully) enjoy... Continue reading

Today is the one-week mark of my fast, and thanks to Dennis I now know that I am actually still fasting. I thought that by eating the small portions I have been eating, I had broken my fast completely. This had actually bummed me out a little bit, and I thought that perhaps I should have had more willpower and continued to fast completely. But Dennis said that fasting, by definition, means to eat nothing or very, very little. So I looked it up, and he's right! The dictionary defines fasting as "The act or practice of abstaining from or... Continue reading

Basically the same thing as yesterday, only at Santa Cruz and not work. Tried to eat a cup of clam chowder, but I don't think it was the right thing to eat because I could only manage about half. It was the same amount of food as yesterday, and it filled me up all day. Had a big, steaming cup of decaf, unsweetened tea at the Bear, which was nice. You don't realize how good it is to eat or drink warm things until you're on cold water all day. The taste and temperature of the tea felt sort of... Continue reading

Went to work again today, and between running up and down the stairs carrying gallons of milk and PA systems and mic stands, and doing load after load of dishes, I realized that I was not really on top of my game. I served someone a caffinated drink instead of decaff, although I realized my mistake just in time. I saw that I was about to pinch my finger in the mic stand I was setting up, but couldn't not do it in time and pinched myself anyway. I've even been making many more typos than usual, and stumbling over... Continue reading

First day back at work this year. Not a good place to be when trying not to eat food. Everything smelled amazing- coffee and sandwiches and pastries. The walk-in refrigerator was an assault of smells, though not all of them good. Amazing how the sense of smell can become so heightened after only two days! I was actually totally irritated and unhappy as soon as I got there; I'm not sure why, but hunger definitely played a part. I was just not a happy camper whatsoever. A coworker psyched me out a little bit, telling me about fasts and cleanses... Continue reading

Well day two is coming to a close, and I'm pretty much where I was yesterday. I was fine all morning, got peckish around lunch and gulped a bottle of water, and by this point I'm basically famished. Went to Mom's house to visit, and was immediately drawn to the bubbling pot of awesome-sauce and meatballs, over which I stuck my face and deeply inhaled the aroma for about five minutes. It was both relieving and torturous. Same thing happened when I got to Dad's house- sizzling onion tart and salad smells caused me to retreat into my room. I... Continue reading

Went to San Juan Bautista today with Dad and Grampy, and felt pretty good all day. Smelled some mouth-watering fried food of some kind, but wasn't really hungry until around 6:00. Sipped on water all day, but only drank 1 liter by the time we got home. Then Dad started cooking dinner. Even with the door closed and the window open in my room, the smell of frying onions and veggies and chicken simmering in curry sauce was almost too much to bear. I considered leaving the house and driving around just to get away from it. I went downstairs... Continue reading

Before anyone thinks I'm crazy (though that might be true), here is some information that I found helpful and informative: One holistic doctor's take on fasting Fasting from a Gaian standpoint I am following the suggestion of a good friend, and taking a multivitamin each night before bed, and I am also taking a break from my birth control pills. I was thinking about drinking unsweetened green tea for the antioxidants, but I don't think caffeine on an empty stomach would make me feel very good. I missed my first cup of tea with breakfast today, which means that the... Continue reading

Happy new year everyone! It's been a crazy decade, hasn't it? My way of welcoming the new year involves fasting, which is why I set up this blog. I read a blog of a friend's experience with this water-only fast, and it really helped me get a better idea of what it's all about. I'm mostly doing this for me, but welcome anyone who wants to read : ) It's a way to document this time, and will also probably serve as something to distract me from my growling tummy the first couple of days. I'm expecting the first three... Continue reading
