This is such a wonderful post. It's been so hard this year - but then I realized that I can't think of a time when I haven't been working through something or trying to get through a series of events that left me wondering "Why???" It's so true that the Universe never loses faith in us. Sometimes you just need to close your eyes and keep walking, knowing that it's holding your hand and won't let you fall.
Once upon a story: What I have learned in 2010
istock photo As the year end approaches, I always seem to retreat into my shell to hibernate for a while. I guess it is my way of figuring out where I have been and where i am going. 2010 has been a year of great learning for me: learning in every arena. Every belief I have held that has been ...
Christine, will you be MY origami mommy? Your kids must have so much fun with you.
As for what I'd like to learn, I have a book here on making paper laterns and lamps. It sounds like so much fun, but it's a lot for one person to bite off when they haven't crafted in years.
Stamping and a fall giveaway
A few weeks ago I found myself totally riveted by Filth Wizardry's blog post on stamping, using plasticine to make amazing prints. I used to love stamping as a child. And who didn't? Ink, paper, and magic. I loved that breathless anticipation as I waited to see what would emerge when I lifted ...
You are so, so talented. I wish I had a fraction of your crafting abilities!
Gather, pleat, smock, and sew
I've been spending many happy hours engrossed in sewing lately. I didn't grow up sewing and I don't know where the love of sewing comes from, or the determination to master it even though I am such a novice. I know that I had one moment of sheer bliss while I watched a thin, perfectly cut ...
Kids walk to school in the first grade? Wow! I would have been so completely scared out of my wits at that age! It's amazing how different cultures can be, isn't it?
Free-range kids
A few days ago, the school held a safety class for the children, followed by an information session for parents. At this class, they were given this pamphlet: and taught a few moves and tips for being vigilant as they walk to and from school. They were reminded to do things like stay aware, l...
Your children are so, so gorgeous. :)
Summer sewing
Sewing is a huge challenge for me right now (how do those of you with babies do it?!!!) but the intense craving to sew something quick and summery just would not be satisfied until I did it. So I did! I made summery little dresses in subdued Fourth of July colors for my girls. I'm always torn...
I'm such a sucker for kitchen gadgetry...
A Pocketful of Peaches
Like many a baker, gadgets are my Achilles heel. And I've noticed that all the cooking stores are getting better and better at pumping out cute little tools and machines that illuminate previously-unknown voids in your kitchen inventory. My saving graces are that I don't have a kitchen the siz...
It must be so tough to have two homes. I have no idea what it feels like, but it must be very strange indeed.
On a side note, your photos are gorgeous. :)
Back home
Summer is here, in all its lush green glory. For the first time in years, we spent a bit of time in the U.S. for part of June, and got to enjoy some time at the ocean, too. And then we all got on a plane and left. We're back in Japan now, for the summer and perhaps a bit longer. We are hom...
I'm so happy for you two! I'm glad your wedding day was the one few sunny day from that month, though from the looks of it, you would have shined through even the darkest storm. :)
Return to the Kitchen
I'm back! Thank you ALL for your well-wishes and congratulations - they meant so much to me. Whether you're a long time reader, or just someone who dropped by and left a note, it made me feel that on the 23rd of May, the happiness I felt spread out beyond the sun-dappled garden where I stood w...
I was so sad to miss this! But, alas, I was out of town. Next year.
San Francisco Chocolate Salon - A Second Go Around
Remember the San Francisco Chocolate Salon I attended last year? A gathering of some of best artisan chocolatiers from near and far, and all the chocolate you could handle? Well, I was lucky enough to be invited back this year as a judge. Which meant that for about three weeks I had regular ...
Ha! You crack me up. ;) Might check this out... Diane Cu told us about it in Mexico:

SUPER cool.
Sunday
For someone like me who spends nearly all my time at my computer or in my kitchen, spending an entire day, from morning till night, in San Francisco with my camera was an indulgent, luxurious slice of wonder. Many thanks to Penny de los Santos for leading this weekend's food photography worksho...
And, what did you use to create the video? You're so handy!

That was wonderful! I had a great time, though I wish we'd gotten to hang out a little more. :) Lunch when I get back from Thailand?

Oooh, intrigued. I will definitely make some of this, and thanks for pointing out the book, which I now also want to read.
Question - how long does this stuff keep at room temperature? I've never been there, but I imagine Ethiopia is very warm!
Spiced Butter - Nit’ir qibe
I grew up on ghee -- basically, clarified butter (butter that has had the milks solids and water removed). Of course, when I was young, there was no concept of low-fat anything and foods were not just cooked in a few tablespoons of ghee; the best dishes, I remember, were deep-fried in ghee. Y...
Great news!! Congratulations!
Queen of Spices, Saveur magazine, April 2010
Istock photo - Green Cardamom I am so super excited about my first-ever story for Saveur magazine!! It is about my love of cardamom. I have to admit I was super-excited to do this article. Every since I began writing, it was my dream to see my by-line in Saveur. IStock photo - black ca...
CONGRATULATIONS my dear! I'm so so so happy for you. :)
In the Mood for Love
I joked to my boyfriend this weekend that this might have been the first time since I've started working that I got a day off to celebrate Chinese New Year. Okay, so it was really Presidents' Day, but given that they practically get a whole week off in China (yes, that means they are still rev...
I embrace out outlier status. :)
Outlier
Ever been to a party, and ended up with a group of lawyers, or doctors, or professors of medieval English literature, and they're tossing around professional jargon like a baseball? And not only have you no clue what in holy hell they're yammering about, but you really, truly, and sincerely...
If you need any help, I'm at your service! This sounds like a fun project. :)
Fleurir: Chocolates in Full Bloom
A few weeks ago, I got an e-mail from Ashley Hubbard of Fleurir Chocolates, asking if I'd like to try some chocolates from her and her fiance's freshly created artisan chocolate business. If there's anything that cacao-crazy San Francisco has instilled in me, it's an appreciation of chocolate ...
I love that quote! "I don't think I have written it yet." Perfect.
Essay: The best is yet to come
I was at an event where I heard two women, very young, having a discussion about how the best things are all already found - best food, best books et. It was such a depressing thought. I disagree so much that I had to post about it. Whenever someone asks me what my favorite spice is or what ...
Salmon is my favorite. I might try this with arctic char, since it's more sustainable!
Simple, Spicy, Sassy Salmon, Feb 2010
Years ago, many moons ago, I had created a recipe for a national magazine using a super simple spice-rub. I would like to share that with you here today with the addition of my newest obsession, maple syrup. Spice-Rubbed Salmon Steaks with Mashed Potatoes Serves 2 2 salmon steaks, ea...
Oh! I have such a love of little printed chocolates. Have you thought about posting a tutorial?

Those photos are making my hungry. I have such a love of Mexican food that it may be the only thing that keeps me in this [often intolerable] state!
Jonesing for Mexican
Ask any transplanted Californian what they miss most about “home,” and 9 times out of 10 they’ll immediately fire back, “Mexican food.” I was no different. So Tadaaki and I spent our honeymoon in Puerto Vallarta (not exactly paradise, but a familiar haunt). Instead of disco hopping with my ...
I remember when I made your fenugreek chicken, I smelled like maple the next day! It was hilarious. Then my friend mentioned that she took it as a supplement to help with lactation with her first baby, and she smelled like maple syrup the entire month she took it. How funny, and how tasty.
iSPICE: Fenugreek, Washington Post Online
Remember all the fuss in New York a few years ago about a strange maple syrup aromapermeating the city? Well, last year investigators found the culprit: fenugreek seeds. Read all about the seeds, the leaves (both fresh and dried) in my column this week. And then try the recipe for our f...
One of these days I will have to post my teriyaki kale chip recipe. Thanks for reminding me!
Chaat Masala Kale Chips
This post and recipe is inspired by the lovely Jaden Hair over at steamykitchen.com. A while ago Jaden had posted a recipe on making kale chips. I was fascinated. I love crispy kale but avoided eating it because deep-frying and I are not on talking terms these days. Her recipe indicated that the...
This was a great recap - you brought me and my wandering, nostalgic mind back to home. Even the motormouth comment, which I'm trying very hard not to be offended by. ;)
I miss you and hope to see you soon, on either side of the Pacific. Want to meet me in Thailand in March?
Food Bloggers in Mexico
“No Dorothy, we’re not in Kansas anymore.” If I told you this was shot from my kitchen window, you know I’d be lying. I’m not sure there is any beach in Japan that looks like this. Well, maybe in Okinawa. The beaches I’ve been to have not been particularly clean, nor would I call picking my...
Pomegranate and panna cotta - perhaps the perfect marriage. Thank you!
Passion in Panna Cotta: Lychee and Pomegranates
The boyfriend has been on a pomegranate kick lately. I'll see him standing at the sink, staring pensively down, hands subtly moving...doing what? Inspecting the sink for scratches? Ruminating over the dirty dishes I haven't cleaned from the last baking project? Trying to secretly get rid of so...
