So sad about this. Especially since here in Canada, we haven't even started the latest season. It'll be different knowing it's the last one and that it won't end the way they wanted it to.
Saying goodbye to Eureka
Last year, my friend Amy told me she was moving from writing Leverage to writing Eureka. She asked me if I was interested in playing a scientist who was kind of a jerk. I said "yes" as fast as I could, and ended up playing Doctor Isaac Parrish for seven of the ten episodes in season 4.5. When se...
I love love love the purple/charcoal ones and the cream/turquoise ones. Lovely!
Busy, Busy, Busy!!
A quick update. My days have been filled with pillows, and more pillows! With the opening coming up this Monday, shit has to get done! My home office is a disaster - thank god Sopes isn't home - he's a complete neat freak. We're hoping to have the new website open that day as well - keep you ...
I completely agree with your post. Whenever I go on vacation, I have the "must tweet" reflex but after a day or two, I find that I quite easily turn to my trusty journal/notebook, which I've been keeping around specifically for this purpose.
I think you can find a good balance between being connected and disconnected, and yes, connecting even when there's little enjoyment in it is a form compensation, in my opinion, for a lack of socialising - I should know, I do it all the time. But it's a whole lot easier to be connected to nothing than to be disconnected.
Often, I wish I could disconnect from my computer more often... if only I didn't work off of it!
on the benefits of being unplugged
There's a saying, possibly apocryphal, that actors act for free, but get paid to wait. If you've ever spent any time on a set, this will probably make a lot of sense to you; a day on the set usually features extended periods of boredom, punctuated by brief moments of terror -- oh, wait, that's s...
What a great post! I was too young to remember Challenger, but I've always loved the grandeur of space and the mystical nature of the stars. When I was a kid, I wanted to be an astronaut, and our family trip to Florida, with a pit stop at the Kennedy Space Station, was one I'll remember forever! I still have my laminated posted of Discovery blasting-off, with gold trim on the sides to match the beautiful orange glow beneath the shuttle.
I'm so sad that the shuttle programme is ending... It means I'll never make it to a launch to feel the heat of the moment live. But maybe they'll want to send a writer to space, at some point, and that writer will be me! :)
some of us are looking at the stars
On January 28, 1986, I was home from school with the flu. I remember that, no matter what I did, I couldn't get warm, so I was sitting in a hot bath when my mom knocked on the bathroom door. "There was an accident with the space shuttle," she said, in the same voice she used when she told me th...
I don't know why, but I really love this post. It's just so... real.
rain down on me from a great height
I had a very short day today, and was wrapped just after lunch, so I had the afternoon to myself to take care of some very important business. Before I get to that, though, a little bit about working on Eureka... The good news is that I was given permission to twitter and photograph from the set...
I really enjoyed this post!
Especially the part about passing by a studio (or sound stage in this case) and really wanting nothing more but to spend hours upon hours there, just doing your thang.
Of course, when you do, it doesn't always live up to your expectations - at least not in the long-term - but the dream is totally worth it.
there and back again
Someone, I think it was Shane Nickerson, recently recalled the apocryphal advice given to people who choose to come live in Los Angeles: this city sucks, so if you're going to live here, you should at least love what you do... I got into Hollywood at 11 yesterday morning, and came back out at 7:...
Yes. As a writer/journo/TV broadcaster/blogger/tweeter/sharer, I definitely think we're compelled. There's just no other way to explain it. We don't just do it because we like it or want to... we HAVE to.
When I don't write SOMETHING/ANYTHING for a while, I feel all bottled up and stressed and I just have to let it out in some form. Sometimes, I can avoid the actual creative process by doing something related, like singing or playing the guitar. But most of the time, that's just a temporary fix. Like craving chocolate but having hot chocolate instead.
As for the balance... It's really tough to just "be". At least for me. I find it hard to leave the observational, detail-oriented, analytical part of me behind and just enjoy experiences. I always have the need to record and to share, and it's only after much struggling that I can push that need aside.
I've found that going into a situation deciding NOT to report but just to enjoy sometimes helps achieve that "it's okay not to tell the whole world about this" feeling. But not always. Although it does become easier with practice!
Thanks for sharing! :)
five quick things I think you'll like
I'm doing something fun and geeky this morning, but I need to close some tabs before I can really get into it, so I'd like to tell you all that John Scalzi's book Your Hate Mail Will Be Graded, for which I wrote the introduction, is now available in trade paperback. I genuinely loved this book, ...
This is absolutely completely awesome!!! Now I'm gonna have to watch it again and listen to your voice through all the Romulans! :)
in which a fairly major secret is made secret no more
Back in the old days, before Twitter exploded into the phenomenon that it is now, I got a message from Greg Grunberg. Greg plays Matt Parkman on Heroes (this information, which most of you don't need, is provided as a public service to the seven of you who do), and has been in every JJ Abrams pr...
YES! Evil Wil Wheaton (The Big Bang Theory Version) MUST make a comeback.
The Creepy Candy Coating Corollary
I'm at w00tstock right now, and I haven't even seen the show, but I thought it would be fun to write a post in advance so anyone who watched The Big Bang Theory tonight would have a place to talk about it. If everything goes according to plan, this should post right as the episode is finishing o...
Woohoo!!
Congrats, Wil! :)
In which Memories of the Future Volume One is released
I am beyond excited to announce the release of my newest book, Memories of the Future, Volume One. I worked harder on this book than anything since Just a Geek, and it wouldn't have been possible without a bunch of people, who I thank in the book, but wanted to thank here, as well: Andrew Hacka...
Awww... that's fantastic!
wil wheaton gets lucky ... sometimes
This was the ultimate highlight of my #PAX 2009, and watching it again just now brought tears to my eyes again. I'm not worthy of something this awesome. Thank you Jonathan, and Paul, and Storm, and Molly for making me feel cool. I <3 you guys.
I love it!!
This is the cover for Memories of the Future, Volume One
This is the cover for Memories of the Future, Volume One. I looked at a bunch of different designs (and at least one of them may be a variant cover at some point) but when I saw the comp that ended up leading to this cover, I knew that this was the one I'd want to use, because I just love 195...
I've never been a pet owner because of allergies, but I've cried at funerals for inspirational people I barely knew... and I don't cry easy!
Ferris was an inspiration to you, to your whole family, and to everyone who was touched by your stories of her. Her memory will live on in these stories, and there are times where I'm sure you'll wish she were there to share new moments with you, and if you keep that feeling alive, you'll always be close to her.
*hugs*
through the fish-eyed lens of tear stained eyes
My dog Ferris, who was rescued from a bus stop in Monrovia by my wife Anne almost exactly 8 years ago, had a heart attack and died this morning. It happened very quickly, and I was with her, which is supposed to make me feel better, but at this moment all I can feel is nearly-unbearable sorrow, ...
WOW.
when memes collide, we all win
Years from now, our kids are going to ask us about the Wolf Shirt and Keyboard Cat memes and wonder why in the world we cared about them so much. When that day comes, some of us will reach into our dressers, pull out this shirt, and tell our children, "We needed them, so we could have this."
Maybe so, Johny Ho, but that just doesn't have the same effect.
the great retweeting madness of 2009
Read in reverse order for maximum silliness and WTFosity. Maybe it's just me, but this was the hardest I've laughed in a long time. Thanks, Gabe.
I cannot wait to buy this! :D
I loved every single review you posted... it'll be great to pull out the book when one of those episodes comes on and follow along :)
Boy, there sure is a lot of pain, and it is painful. For Troi and the audience.
...let me tell you all about the pain. I've written enough books and things to identify a few milestones along my creative road. When I was ... well, I almost said 'still figuring this out', like I have it all figured out, which I don't, so I'll try again: When I had even less figured out than I...
:D
I told myself I'd be playing again this season... so far I've only done step one: Got myself a new pair of skates this week!! :D
Kelly Hrudey is a sweetie. I've worked with him many times and he's laidback and stress-free and loads of fun :)
Also, Quick is amazing. Definitely Quick between the pipes ;)
LA Times: through a goalie's eyes
Ask any goalie, in any sport that has them, and they'll tell you about The Secret Goalie Brotherhood or The Keeper's Club or some variation of that theme. I didn't know it existed when I started playing, but once you're in, you're in for life, and it's wonderful. Whether it's a little kid on a p...
Way to taunt us, Shane... Crazy Idea is funny? I think that's our first hint!
Lovely story Wil, as always. I love these because I think that when you'll re-read it someday, you'll sit back and think, "Wow. This is my life." and feel very lucky and (hopefully) very happy.
PS (and yes, I did tweet this already): Coordinating tweets is pretty geeky... but not as crazy as @replying to the person sitting next to you. Especially if you're reading over each other's shoulders.
in which wil has a good day
Today was, as the song goes, and the movie says, a good day. I woke up before my alarm, feeling rested and relaxed. My dog met me before my feet hit the floor, and followed me to the kitchen, wagging her tail and nuzzling at my side the entire way. I grabbed a cup of coffee and wrote for about t...
That sucks!
Also, car charger. Or car plug converter.
The good news? Maybe they'll see this post and feel bad and forget all about today's incident.
Ya never know...
stupid murphy's law can bite me.
My plans to spend last night with the Basic D&D Dungeon Master's Booklet were derailed when I got a late-afternoon phone call from my manager. "You have a pilot audition tomorrow," he said. "I'm sending you all the material right now." He described the show to me; it sounds very cool. He describ...
LOL!! Ooooooh! This explains it then.
@stepto: YEEESSSSSSSSSSS
If you don't follow me on Twitter, you can safely ignore this post.
lol! That's awesome! (Minus the surgery and meds part).
from the vault: my awesome dog
When you break the world down into dog people and cat people, I guess I'm mostly a dog person, even though I've loved every cat I've ever owned. Sometimes, though, my dog tests me, like in this entry from the vault... When I was at CES [a few weeks ago] for InDigital, I got a phone call from Ann...
LOL!!! Alex is hilarious.
Also, sometimes I don't understand who people still have their jobs when they're so disconnected from their industry, and really, their jobs.
wil wheaton vs. text 2 speech
There's quite a dustup at the moment about an editorial the president of the Author's Guild wrote in the New York Times, railing against Amazon's Kindle 2, which has a text to speech feature that he claims creates unauthorized derivative works and should be stopped at all costs. I'm not the only...
Ah yes. I caught this video last week... priceless!
Definitely met my lols quota for the day.
In fact, I think I need to watch it again.
I love the Onion so much, I want to marry it.
My friend Aaron just sent me this. I believe this represents the shortest amount of time between me getting something hilarious via e-mail and posting it to my blog: Sony Releases New Stupid Piece Of Shit That Doesn't Fucking Work
Awww... I wish I had someone to share stuff like this with.
These days, if I want to take a break from the computer, I either play guitar (using online tabs, which kinda defeats the purpose), or... I dunno!
It's a solitary life.
the best ten minutes of the day
A few weeks ago, I introduced Nolan to this really fun, really simple dice game from Cheap Ass Games called Button Men. Distilled to its essence, Button Men is a fast-paced brawling game where two players roll and try to capture dice from each other. Small dice are considered "skillful" and big ...
hihihi
twitter funtimes
I don't think you need a lot of context from me to set this up, so I'll just say that this happened last night on Twitter: Me: @BrentSpiner: Just watched you on Leverage - You ROCKED. You were such an awesome dirtbag, and I know a thing or two about playing dirtbags. Brent: @wilw Thanks Wil. I...
