A day of rest at the Moravian Church Community Centre
We slept in until 8h00 this morning after struggling to sleep last night. I think we both were too tired and our muscles ached after yesterday’s gruelling 9 hour dirt ride. We had breakfast here at the community centre (ZAR10 each for eggs and toast). Since we entered into Tanzania we’ve been ...
Sjoe dit was 'n tawwe dag/nag! Net bly julle het veilig in Sumbawanga gearriveer. Lekker uitrus vanaand. Luv. V1x
Too much adventure for one day!
Our day turned out to be one of the most hectic experienced on the trip so far! We arrived at a hotel in Sumbawanga at 23h45 last night looking like this: and here is a close up: 11 hours earlier… We left the Vodashop in Mbeya very excited to have sorted out our IT with the help of Petro....
Ek is bly julle is so maklik oor die grens na Tanzania. Julle word nou "streetwise". V1x
First post from Tanzania
You might have noticed that some of the posts only appear a day after we’ve typed them. It’s not because we are lazy, but rather a lack of either power or reception. The first day in a new country is also always a gamble as we do not know how the data connections work yet. Tania had great diffic...
Daai houtdek lyk dekadent lekker!!! V1x
A great ride to Sangilo Sanctuary
As we left Mzoozoozoo this morning we pulled into the Total garage around the corner and couldn’t believe our eyes as we stopped next to the pump and filled our tanks with petrol – NO queues today! So we were very lucky! We filled up and should now be okay until we get into Tanzania. The weather...
Luv. V1x
A short ride to Mzuzu
Last night was pizza night at Mayoka, so it was difficult (read: impossible) to resist. This was not good for our budget, but we argued that we didn’t spend anything on fuel as we didn’t go anywhere, so the saving made up for it. We had a lovely second night’s sleep in a bed with pillows and...
Tracking crocodiles with Juma
We got up early (by our standards) this morning and broke up camp and made coffee before meeting Juma at 7h00 for a walk. He wanted to show us the crocodiles and tell us the story of Chitaka Falls. He is a wonderfully gentle man as he explains life in Malawi and how you are a rich man if you onl...
More of amazing Malawi
After some expensive grocery shopping at the Spar in Lilongwe this morning we filled our fuel tanks again. Each took 500 ml, but everyone warned us not to go to Malawi due to a fuel shortage. Later today, at Salima, we filled up again. Seems that it’s only diesel that is a problem. We had a hea...
A friendly crossing into Malawi
Mama Rula’s campsite has a great bar and chill-out area as you can see from the photo below: We updated our blog and read our emails and had some “slap” chips and beer from the bar – a real treat! Here is Francois and Raphael the friendly bar man: This evening we had a few extra campers (t...
I will comment in English so that Brad can also follow the family conversations. I can see you are quite bored today (because it is not not ur natural inclination to re-pack luggage) but it helps to re-organise your stuff! Please publish the rooterkoek recipe for Villiers and my trip to Gonazarou next month. It looks mouth watering - I must just remember the maple syrup. Take note Villie. Jou baard kom mooi aan Frankie.Leka dag more. Luv. Vrankois1
Doing pretty much nothing on the public holiday
Since today was a public holiday in Zambia, we decided have a rest as well. It was great sleeping late under the trees and lazing around our tent on the grass. While sitting in the shade (alone in the campsite) an entourage of SUV’s and pickups arrived. There were at least 15 of them, some of wh...
Lekker ry julle. Luv. V1x
On the road again and meeting more great people
After a wonderful supper last night, we slept like babies in a bed – for the first time in two weeks. After a hot bath this morning, Elsa treated us to bacon and eggs. What a lovely stay and thanks again for the hospitality! Last night we had pap en wors and a great evening with Elsa, Piet, M...
Luv. V1x
A day of amazing eating
This morning Chantal and Arjan our Dutch neighbours at Mooring’s Campsite kindly invited us to join them for breakfast. The coffee was amazing and Arjan made yummy toast for us by using the coals made to heat up the “donkey” (kettle geyser). What a treat! These two travellers did an amazing tr...
Meeting some wonderful people
We really took it easy in Livingstone the last two days and enjoyed the swimming pool. Last night we had real bacon sandwiches for supper. Those of you who don’t know, it is just a piece of bread and bacon, no spread of lettuce or anything else. It was great and I’ll do it again! During our stay...
Having a jolly time in Livingstone
It’s easy to forget about time here at Jollyboys in Livingstone and we spent a very relaxing day - our first time to stay over in the same place for another night since we started this trip. This morning we emptied our saddle bags and took the bikes to explore Vic Falls. It is clear why Vic Fall...
Crossing our 2nd border post and into Zambia
We managed to cross our second border post into Zambia successfully today and it feels great to have yet another milestone past! This morning we woke up refreshed from our night’s rest next to the hippos and decided to push on towards the border of Zambia as it was only 113km away. First we chec...
Thanks for your SMS from Poppa Falls. Sorry I did not remember the thick sand en-route to Ngepi Camp. Dries and I travelled that area in a V8 Land Cruiser and not a 200cc bike, so forgive me! Hope you like the scenerry and the pub? The road from Ngepi to Katima is awesome. Enjoy the big trees and the lovely Kwando River. I had to cross it with a ferry in 1970. Spoil yourself with a hammie tonight and save the noodles for later...V1x
Buying some local Kavango lemons
We really enjoyed our stay at Roy’s Rest Camp last night and met some friendly fellow Stellenboschers who helped us with some more contacts in Egypt, Sudan, Ethiopia and Uganda. Dr Hannes Loots a doctor at Medi Clinic even phoned his contact in Egypt to ask him if it is okay if we contact him on...
Julle soek mos 'n bad by jul huis in Klapmuts - hoekom het julle nie die mooi bad langs die swembad by Roy's Camp saamgeneem nie?
A strange night and coincidental first game of the RWC
After the bikes were serviced and the washing hung out to dry I popped over to the bar to fetch drinks while Tania prepared stunning 2-minute noodles with salami, our budget speciality for the trip so far. We had supper in a lonely campsite - we expected the few small tents’ occupants to come ho...
So watch out for phrase like "just around the corner", "not too far" or "just follow this road until you get a sign which says..."!Hope tonight is luckier and less eventful.
Enjoy.

Wild goose chase - but worth it!
What a ride! Whoa! Our seemingly "easy and relaxed" day took a turn for the worst when we tried to find a piece of grass to pitch our tent for this 4th day on Crossing Africa... Mariental accommodation we found out a bit too late does not come in abundance. After sorting our IT stuff at the Wimp...
Dis so lekker as 'n droom waar word! Geniet elke dag meedoenloos!
Luv.

D-day and the perfect way to start the trip
We left home at 18h05 this afternoon after scrambling for the last few things to pack. Suddenly it looked as if we packed too much yet I still managed somehow forget my Crocs. An overwhelming feeling of "what the hell are we doing" hit me as we got geared up. We had a short 42 km drive to our ...
