This pattern began to manifest itself most nefariously in what we call the web kudzu of 2010 and 2011 — inline ads that turned keywords into links, URL shorteners, video ads that took over an entire page without warning, and so on. We continued (and continue!) to spend significant time with clients and partners managing community sites and blogging software, and all of them felt frustrated with these “products” whose smothering of the web seemed inevitable. Over and over, our clients told us, “We want a way to give better tools to our audience to see and read our work,... Continue »

My boyfriend and I often disagree about dragging each other to see things. I admit that I'm a perpetual button-pusher, a semi-professional goader, and a more-than-full-time Troll of a girlfriend. "What is a partnership if we don't make each other... Continue »

Websites should think of Instapaper as competition. People are spending their reader-experience (RX?) dollars elsewhere, period. They don't want to pay publisher sites with impressions on ads they don't value, so they pay Marco Arment for a better reading experience. If publishers want to get those RX dollars, they have to deliver a great experience Instapaper can't provide. It's pure and simple competition. via www.readwriteweb.com His argument boils down to this: readers like Instapaper and Readability, because they provide a clutter-free reader experience, so the solution is that website should have more clutter, like videos, community, etc. My first interpretation... Back in the day (1994), we had to get our R.E.M. information from the listserv (that's email for you kids) run out of Lynchburg College in Virginia.
