Thanks for your thoughtful comment, Paula! I'm delighted that you enjoyed the post! We must make sure we don't fall prey to those presuppositions, I agree. You quote some great ones that I've heard many times -- it's so important not to fall into those traps, isn't it? The worst one I was ever told was the ironic "Writing is easy. Just open a vein and bleed." I believed it for a while. Then I decided to stop believing it. And when I stopped believing it, everything got a great deal more enjoyable! Thanks so much!

"But what is a mince pie?" my US friends sometimes ask me. My answer is simple. It's a delicious, seasonal pastry pie with a rich fruit filling, which we Brits call "mincemeat." Mincemeat is a darkly delicious mixture of berries,... Continue reading

As Donald Trump suggests revoking citizenship for those who burn the US flag, professional flag-destroyers across the country fear this will throw their ventures into jeopardy. Paris Roadman-Stamp, for instance, owner of Little Burners Boutique, is concerned that her advertisements... Continue reading

Image by Jenn, via Creative Commons, with thanks. The best Christmas present I ever bought my dad was a pair of "jingle bell" socks. It sounds ridiculous because I gave him so many other gifts, and who wants socks that... Continue reading

I was born in Paddington, London. In other words, I was born a bear. I remember the Paddington stories from when I was a kid, including Paddington and his famous "hard stare". In fact, my first real teddy bear was... Continue reading

The night after Donald Trump won the election, I had a bad dream. I'm sure, given the context, you'll figure out its meaning. My partner and I were leading a new pet camel down the street on a leash. This... Continue reading

A palm reader once asked me, "Do you have any dogs?" to which I replied that I never had. "Well," they said, "prepare yourself, because you've got two of them coming very, very soon." He wasn't wrong. In less than... Continue reading

In these new Crackleheads posts, British skeletons tell very bad jokes, attempt to get political, and generally insult one each other. They also recommend stuff. (Don't listen.) SKELLIE: Ready for a joke? SIR BONES: I'm all ears, bonemeister mine. Or... Continue reading

I've often felt like Mildred Hubble, the "worst witch" in her school. I was good at English and French, but terrible at practical subjects. Truth was, I had clammy hands when I got nervous, and shaky spatial awareness. Once, I... Continue reading

We re-watched the Harry Potter movies recently, and I was delighted, as always, by the scenes when Harry uses the vial of liquid luck he wins from his potions teacher, Slughorn, in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. I think... Continue reading
