Dr Huston-
Is there a way to prevent media from disappearing from my home drive if I set the scratch drives to my home drive halfway through my log & capture session?
I'm in the lab right now and am afraid to get off my computer because I don't want to lose half of my clips :)
thank you!

It was incredibly helpful to see what kind of effect my video had on viewers, even if there was only about two minutes of video to make assumptions off of. I'm excited to get more editing done and show the class our remix and finished product!
Rough Cuts
Follow-up on the Rough Cut reviews here. Was it helpful to view your work with the class? What did you learn? What are you thinking of changing? What do you still have to do for your Revised Rough Cut? What do you like about your Rough Cut?
I'm generally worried about the outcome of our movie. Very nervous for the reactions and how we're going to piece together our interviews and information we gathered with our surveys, etc. I'm nervous but also very excited to start editing and making this film! :) Can't wait to see everyone else's film as well.

I feel like our production went as well as it could've given our resources and scheduling. I know we are missing footage of the gun range on gun club road, but I was sick that day and was the only one with the camera so that won't be showing up in the film. I regret not getting more film and having a wide range of hours and options of film to choose from when we go in to do editing later tonight and this week. I think our interview with the old woman who was in the military will be an interesting interview to piece together in the film.
Production review
How did production go? What are most happy with having accomplished? What do you think or feel your are missing? What do you regret? What is the best thing you think you shot?
Building on what Vanessa mentioned, it's going to be interesting deciding who will be doing the voice overs when needed during our group's film. I want to stay away from the normal, boring voice over and only use it when needed and if necessary. I liked Chris Marker's text on the screen concept: It was simple and it didn't have a hard to understand accent to try to recognize while watching the movie. (Yes, he did have a French accent but it was helped in being understood by the fact that he DID have words on the screen to help the audience).

In comments to this entry, discuss the subject of "voice" in non-fiction and documentary film. Have you discussed whose voice will be the voice of your film? Are you considering the use of voiceover? Whose voice will provide that voiceover? Is that person meant to be taken as the "author" of the...
How exactly are we supposed to edit the PDF? I tried saving it to my computer and opening it with word and it came out with nothing. I tried copying and pasting it directly from the blog and there were s p a c e s in between E V E R Y word.
Very frustrating, because we have to film today. Please help or convert to a .doc file.
PDF of Consent & Release Form
I have not been able to work with UCS to solve the problem with accessing the informed consent form & video release from my faculty wesbite. So, I am making the form available here. Download GeneralReleaseFall2011GEOG386
I found the film to be fascinating! The plot I seemed to follow was that he was doing a sort of "day in the life of" film. Professor Huston told us that it took place in Soviet Russia, so I'm assuming that it was a "Day in the life of Russians". My favorite part of the film was how the choreographed the music to fit the scenes he was shooting, the marriage and divorce scenes in particular. That was one of the best "wow!" scenes in the film. I found myself getting fully immersed in the music and how it played along beautifully to the scenes he was capturing. He seems like he was true visionary of his time and this film captured it beautifully!

Before the next class meeting, screen Dziga Vertov's Man with a Movie Camera (also translated as Man with the Movie Camera). Share your thoughts and reactions to the film in a comment to this entry. The exercise is worth two (2) points. I will also count this comment towards your regular bloggin...

I also forgot to add that while interviewing the American versus the Canadian, the canadian knew more about American politics than the American citizen did. Yes, this is a broad generalization but I think with more research and a plethora of interviews, we can show that this is indeed a somewhat true generalization of the American people and our lack of education for civics.
Pitches

I am interested in making a film that documents and addresses the issue of civics in our country, and how the education of our country's civics is, essentially, dying. I saw Michael Moore speak in Salem when he visited a few years ago, and something he did during his talk really stuck with me. He brought a Canadian citizen on stage and an American and asked both people questions about the American government, how our judicial system works, and what politicians (by name) did for their work with our government.
I would be interviewing all levels of educated people, from high schoolers to professors and so-forth. I think it would be a fascinating discovery to see how much of the educational aspect of civics has died in this country's education system. We could also shed light on the process of becoming a naturalized citizen in this country and point out the flaws in the test one must take to become a US citizen.
If you have any ideas to add to my idea, please do! Thanks :)

I have no formal experience what-so-ever in filmmaking, but I feel like my semi-trained eye for photography will come in handy for working with a video camera. I look forward to using my creative eye to make interesting shots and hopefully catch the audiences eye during the film I/we/my group ends up making.
Prior experience
A number of students mentioned that already had a hobby of film making or had some experience with cameras and editing software. What kind of experience do you already have? What are you looking forward to gaining more experience in?
As you expressed last Thursday in class, nothing we can make in a ten week period will come close to looking "hollywood perfect", but we need to accept that that's okay. Most of us are beginners in the film-making world that this class has brought us into, and we should take every fault we see in our work as a step towards learning and perfecting the craft of what we'll be doing for the next ten weeks. Nothing perfect is ever that interesting, so be proud that we'll have some faults along the way!
Project worries
In the Learning Assessments many students mentioned being worried about the project, about not having time to finish, about not being satisfied with the final results, of allowing perfectionism to get in the way of compelting the process. What strategies or advice do you have for managing these ...
