Nevertheless, as you have suggested the ALP resurrected its fortunes by changing. First, a dash of middle class radicalism with Whitlam and Dunstan. Second, a dose of Carr and Beattie moderation esp in terms of media performance and policy ambition. It will need more substantive change this time. Its structure and rules will need to change to become genuinely catch-all and not just blue collar unions and a few middle class radicals. The question is whether and when the ALP can make the changes needed to reverse its fortunes yet again. As impressive as they are, your charts should not be read as suggesting that ALP revival will be automatic or soon.
