If you are making something high gravity, or with ginger, or that otherwise ferments fast and furious, don't seal the lid in the initial ferment. Don't put in the airlock even, or at least take it out once the foam starts pushing up into it. We have had 2 brews *explode all over the wall* before we figured this out. Don't worry, it's generating CO2 at such an accelerated rate you won't get any contamination without your airlock.
