It's been incredible here in the Mitten this past week, and after the winter that wouldn't go away we've all been REALLY enjoying it! The birds around our home have gone song crazy, and I spend my days feeling like Snow White being serenaded in the Enchanted Forest {minus the Seven Dwarves as my family are Giants}. Sadly, a short spring full of yard clean-up is on the To-Do list now so the enjoying will be very short-lived. Saturday, I typed everyone's names from the comments section on a sheet of paper, and cut them all up for last weeks... Continue reading

Love that you had the ingenuity to use them on Shrink Plastic - frikking genius! My favorite is the charm you did using the bow/pearl - is that a jewelry blank or did you actually solder it?

I don't talk about it much, but for the last 2 years the running theme in my life seems to be loss & letting go. I have a REALLY hard time letting go of both people and ideas, but it's become a fish I keep getting smacked in the face with over & over. This year for New Years I decided I really needed to put my energy into accepting loss in my life, and when I did that a couple really funny things happened. I let go of people who weren't interested in holding on to me try as... Continue reading

Sorry it took me so long to get back to you ladies about this, but my MiL took a very bad turn with her cancer just after I posted this and I forgot I had posted a Give-Away. The winner is Marge & I have sent her a MSG thru Facebook. Thank you all for your comments! Jen

It's time for my winter hibernation to come to an end, and that means back to weekly blogging. Winter in Michigan is dark, snowy, and everything just seems to make you tired. This used to annoy me, but I've finally learned to embrace the wonderfulness that happens during these quiet months rather than be all out of sorts over my reluctance to be online & blog. I will confess that I managed to keep connected this time thanks to Instagram, but it definitely made me feel like I was cheating on my blog! Do you find yourself pulling more into... This fall our home underwent a big change. Our crazy, loud, family filled evenings suddenly became quiet and (dare I say it?)... peaceful. Our littlest giant started college, and both kids fell into two seperate jobs working at the same place. All fall they worked Friday and Saturday nights at Shaw Haven, a local haunted house/ cornmaze / haunted hayride. We went from a house full of teenagers to a house full of just the two of us. Talk about wonderful! As the kids began to leave the tailend of their teenager years behind, I had worried that I might... Continue reading

I'm rounding out my first segment of Artistic Answers with Cynthia Shaffer. Someone I met through one of my most important mentors (and editors), Jenny Doh. Cynthia and I have discovered that we're both Japanophiles who love to do a lot of the same types of arts & crafts. She's the sensible to Jenny's silly, and someone I've come to admire VERY much (wink!). Hop back over here on Monday to hear my final thoughts on deadlines during chaos. Thank you to all the amazing artists for their time, candor, and advice - I couldn't do it without any of... Continue reading

Happy Thursday my peeps! Here is post 3 from my first segment of Artistic Answers series. I take a break from online posting / deadlines every Wednesday, one of the ways I give myself more time to work on writing/art deadlines during the week so it doesn't take away from MY family time. If you missed posts 1 and 2 you can scroll down to the bottom of this post for the links. Again, if you love these women and what they have to share with you, I hope you'll hop over to their blogs to get to know them... Continue reading

Today is the second post in my new weekly segment, Artistic Answers. I chose the question below as my first one for all these talented ladies because it constantly seems to be happening to me. It saddened me to learn I wasn't alone in feeling all alone with this problem, and Tami's answer really hit home how important it is to let all of you know that it is a normal problem for artistic women that we all deal with at one time or another. The first question is: How do you handle and cope with creative deadlines when you... Continue reading

I'm always toying with new ways to get myself to blog more, and bring more relevant contant to all of you. Over the weekend I came up with the idea of tapping into my pool of friends & mentors in hopes of offering real life working-artist advice to all of you. Over the next couple of weeks, I'll be exploring problems we all face at one time or another as not just artists, but also mothers and wives. For me, that is were some of my biggest difficulties take place ... the sticky ground of trying to make it all... Continue reading

Let me start off with a disclaimer that this is one of those early morning, reflective, kinda deepish posts about life that only has a smidge to do with art. If you're not interested in those kinds of posts from me, I suggest you move along and come back tomorrow when I'm sure to be back to art, art, and more art. The last couple years for me has been all about friendships. Finding and making new ones, doing the work to rekindle longtime ones, and discovering which ones I'm better off without. Friends have always been a sticky thing... Continue reading

I love your heart and mind so much. I hope you know what a difference in my life that first phone call from you made. You set me smack dab in the middle of a very scary road. A road that has led to friendships I now cannot imagine my life without. You have been such a wonderful inspiration, and continually push me to evolve and grow. I love you Jenny Doh, lumps, bumps, insecurities, and all that immense bravery you hold inside your beautiful soul! xox me

Late last month, I was asked by my girls over at Susan Lenart Kazmer: industrial CHIC if I'd be interested in playing around with some of their new product line from Michael's. Umm ... heck yeah! I have known Susan for over ten years now, and she is a constant source of learning and inspiration for me. I've taken more classes from her than any other artist, and I never turn away from the chance to get to do something new with her and her amazing team of artists. When I opened up my package and found this row of... Continue reading

This makes me really REALLY happy for you both. Having been with Larry for over 25 years, I know how hard it can sometimes be to like the one you love ... and even harder to love yourself when you don't like where life is taking you. I'm glad you realized all those things above before it was too late! Big huge enormous love & hugs to you both - cause sometimes your heart has to tell you brain to shut up and just listen for once :) XoX me

A year from now when you're trying to figure out where the heck you're going to put another chair, you will look back on the no furniture times and laugh. It ALWAYS seems to fill up faster than we thought during the empty period. Make the kids sit on the floor, be happy you can see every surface, and just remember to breathe! Cause before you know it the kids will have covered every available surface with stuff. :) WELCOME HOME! xox

CONGRATULATIONS TO: Melissa Pinter and Josette Russon I've sent you both email requests via a private message on Facebook. Please contact me if you didn't get it for some reason. As soon as I hear back from you, I will forward your info on to Jeanne so she can get you a login/password for Creatively Made. Thank you so much for spreading the word! My amazing, inspiring, incredibly brave friend, Jeanne Oliver, is getting ready to relaunch her e-course Creatively Made on Monday, and she's asked me to give away 2 spots to my blog readers. This spring & summer, I've been taking an incredibly fun e-course by Mindy Lacefield {aka Tim's Sally} called Paint Your Story. One of the things many of us taking the class have been talking about struggling with is how hard it is to cover up each background layer with a new one ... especially when you really love the way it looks in the moment. I've always looked at it as a great way to practice the art of letting go - a hard thing to do for many artists. When you're passionate about something, you want it to be... Continue reading

It would most certainly lead to an all inclusive pass to the multi-colored barn tour (which you know would be full of cupcake & cookie stops to refuel)! I think what I'm loving the most so far about You Rule! is the way your voices and personalities shine through on every chapter. It's definitely one of the things I respect and enjoy most about you and our growing frienship. Congratulations to you both, and a hearty THANK YOU for including me in the fun!

Nobody needs a smile so much as the one who has none to give. So get used to smiling heart-warming smiles, and you will spread sunshine in a sometimes dreary world. + Lawrence G. Lovasik + One of the active changes I made in my life when I turned 40 was to meet the eyes of strangers and give away free smiles. I had noticed when running errands in public that the minute someone catches you glancing there way their eyes immediately dart to the ground. It got me thinking about how awkward we all behave around strangers, and I... Continue reading

So, If you follow me anywhere online, you've been seeing this photo of me crop up all over the place. It's from a photoshoot I did over at Vivid Ink for a fabulous new article in the current Cloth Paper Scissors. I have been wanting to write an article about turning your art into tattoos for the longest time, and when I found out they were dedicating an entire issue to wearable art I got really excited! It was such an amazing experience to go through the process of desinging and drawing my own tattoos. It also makes it super... Continue reading

I am so completely happy for you and your family! There is nothing worse than watching your spouse deteriorate in a job/situation they hate. Makes your heart hurst in ways you cannot soothe! We had a slightly smaller scale, yet similar incident happen 12 years ago that brought us to Mason. My husband left his job of 10+ years to take on a partnership halfway across the state. I had a really hard time adjusting to the leaving my family, leaving a city of art & food & shopping that I had wanted to live in my whole life {a town my parents are both from} ... so much so that I begged Larry to commute until I could process it all. A horrible thing for a supportive wife to say, but I don't do so well with big change, and was grasping at straws. Well ... I watched him do a 3 hour commute for months ... watch him loose time with our kids ... with me ... with hobbies. It completely sucked! In the middle of winter I sat him down, and said I was giving in, and we would move to farmland so we could all have our family time back. I cried every drive I took out here - couldn't find a house to save my life, and was a completely mess. {granted I was also really suffering from postpartum depression, but that's a whole nother post}. Finally, we met at lunch about a month or so into our house search, and I broke down crying that i just didn't think I could do it. That very day, my husband's partner told him about a house his BiL wanted to sell, but didn't really want to list. As we drove down the street my heart instantly became peaceful, and I knew that it didn't matter which house on the street it was ... this was the place for our family. A fact that even escaped my lips in a whisper. We stopped at the most adorable cape cod with ferns growing all over the front yard, and I just knew it was all gonna work out. Which of course it did :) I could never have given my kids the life they had here living in the city, would never have become the artist I am now, and never dreamed I would be so happy here I don't ever want to leave. All this from a small town girl with big dreams of city life :) Our five year goal is now a hobby farm where we eventually want to try and run farming/cooking/art camp for inner city children (my lifework's background & Larry's secret hobby). It's amazing how it all just comes together when we least expect it. Here's to big dreams ... big moves ... and big wonderful life changes!

I'm on holiday with Jules & Mom in Paris, but wanted to take a quick minute to share some news about a new emag from Cloth Paper Scissors. I wrote an eyecandy bursting segment for them, and I couldn't be more pleased with the result. I took my Dye Works book from Mixed and Stitched and turned it into an incredible quote journal. You can get a detailed peek at ALL the pages inside along with my tips for adding embellishments to YOUR amazing art. - here's a bit more from Jenn Mason - Art Journaling Exposed Weekend Blog Hop!...
