So, how is your self esteem? Do you want to be excellent simply for its own sake or do you have something to prove? If you have something to prove, you probably chase material wealth and success through much of your waking hours. You want to outsmart, outperform, out-dress, or outshine everyone else in at least 1 aspect of your life. You need something that you can look at and say, "I'm worth something now!" or academia's, "Truly this justifies my existence!" or the most common, "SEE DAD?!". Although such material lies are just convincing enough to adolescents and other individuals whose development was arrested at an early age, they are not adequate measures of personal excellence or self worth.
A cunning, attractive individual of the opposite sex can still get all of your information, the key to your house, the money in your wallet, and the clothes on your back, in just a week or two of telling you what you want to hear. Hackers don't use software to nearly as much these days, not because security measures have improved, but because they can dig through your dumpster or lie to you on a social networking site and achieve the same objectives, for a tiny fraction of the time & effort. You can build another Great Wall of China but it's pointless when your attackers are coming from anywhere but the North.

It's about doing, not reading about doing. The only thing you've really achieved at the end of such a book, is having read it. That should be the tell-tale clue. You picked up a book, read all of the pages within it's covers, and then put it down. Hence, you read a book. Now apply that same philosophy to your goals.
