We're running a New Year's Eve gaming party as well -- the addition this year is that we all have to make up a game using all the bits, baubles, dice, etc that have found their way to our lost and found during the year. I think I've got people intentionally leaving pieces behind now!
on the importance of making time to play the games you like with the people you love
In the introduction to my short collection of gaming essays called Games Matter, I wrote: Of all the things that make me a geek, nothing brings me more joy, or is more important to me, than gaming. I am the person I am today because of the games I played and the people I played them with as I ...
My husband and I opened a game store and then rarely got to game. We realized we were getting crankypants on each other way to much and THEN realized we weren't getting to game.
We then did two things: 1) hired a part-timer (yeah! job creation!) and 2) set aside Friday mornings together so we can play.
Now we play a game together at least once a week and life is good again. Plus, now that we own a game store we get to call it "research."
Life is good.

Thanks for posting -- my husband and I just celebrated our 1st anniversary as game store owners and this quote is perfect! We may have had the world push us into it (he got laid off, I escaped a horrible job), but we're more alive than we've ever been before.
John Green is my hero
Every time I come across something John Green has said, I get excited, inspired, and wish I'd said it myself. (via Visions I Had Buried Underground)
I'm in the "love it in limited doses" camp, but I really love it when playing with new players who are new to the jokes.
More importantly, I wanted to give you a big "thank you" for always promoting FLGS. My husband and I just opened one and there's no better place to learn new games, make new friends and generally be a geek/nerd.
Maybe we'll even convince you to travel north a bit and visit Fresno one day.
learn to kill monsters and take treasures in the comfort of your own home
Munchkin, from Steve Jackson Games, is a fairly polarizing game, especially at BGG, where people tend to love it or hate it. I love it, mostly from playing some truly memorable games with my kids over the years. Nolan was to my right. He kicked in a door and didn't find a monster, so he looked...
My husband and I are going to our first GenCon this year and I was stoked to see you were going to be one of the guests. I've had friends bring me back items you'd signed and purchase your books for me but I've never had a chance to tell you how much I enjoy your writing. Maybe this year is the year.
Excellent.
OH HAI IM IN UR GENCONZ ROLLIN MAH DIZE!
I'm coming to Gen Con! If you like playing nerdy games, even a little bit, you owe it to yourself to go to a game con. There are awesome regional cons happening all the time, like the Strategicons we have here near LAX, and RinCon in Tucson, but the biggest one of all is Gen Con. I've wanted to ...
