Charles, again I wish I had read this thread before ICAF. Your points 2 & 3 strike me particularly as ones that can be addressed (at least provisionally) even without the long-term institutional structures, simply in the ways scholars frame their published research. For those not at ICAF, I presented a study showing that 40% of research articles in comics studies do not frame their research agendas in terms of any existing scholarship, at least not in their introductions, where we normally would see this happen. This absence entails the deficiencies in both areas you name: (to point 3) they do not situate their research in light of the body of comics studies work that has gone before; and (to point 2) they do not signal to us what disciplinary or theoretical perspectives shape their work, thereby missing an opportunity to do some of the self-consciously interdisciplinary work you call for. In a field that is (a.) still under development and (b.) will likely remain (productively) interdisciplinary or multi-disciplinary, it seems particularly important that scholars situate their research in these scholarly contexts. Count me in. (I wish I had read all this before ICAF.) I'm wondering about the process. 1. The American Council of Learned Societies website (http://www.acls.org/about/membership/) states that "A society seeking admission [to ACLS] should be mature and stable. Normally it will have been in existence for a minimum of five years and will hold an annual scholarly meeting. It should possess a sound constitution and by-laws and should be well-administered and financially secure." So, what are the processes of incorporating a comics studies association in the first place? 2. Are you proposing a new annual conference, or might one of the existing annual conferences (or perhaps a merger of two or more?) become the association's regular meeting? 3. Ditto for the journal.
