Steve, Thanks for explaining your thoughts on the why's and how's. Your points on the legal ramifications are - alas - valid. I guess it goes to show that we do not only need mental shifts but also new legal structures to deal with social media and CGC. This is of course already painfully obvious when it comes to mash-ups etc., but we need a new mental and legal framework for corporations to be able to take a reasonable stance. Lawrence Lessig, where are you when a nation turns it's lonely eyes to you? ;) P.S. Although some commenters are negative about the prize, I for one am not. I think it's a really nice idea. BUT - take a look at part 7 of the rules. They just look a bit petty - making the winner responsible for taxes on his winnings? Come on. Lighten up :)

Greg, Although I agree with the fact that some things are very right about this - the social media release, outreach to bloggers (such as myself), cross-platform, etc. - there's still some really bad sins of old involved. And as I'd hate to have to say something bad about the guys over at Crayon :-) I'm glad I think this is purely good old Coke's corporate lawyers showing their pavlovian reflexes. The rules of the contest are downright onerous, and show Coke still isn't capable of 'letting go' - which at the end of the day has to be the starting point of a good social media campaign. I still wish this campaign the best of luck, but hope next time Coke will really be a buddy, not a bully.

Thanks for the plug. And indeed, this is all stuff everybody should be doing this year too - and there's a lot more that can be mentioned from that perspective. However, the ones I list here are those that I see breaking through to the mainstream marketing community, hence trends. And indeed, CGA is tricky (see also the discussion on the 'lazy marketer' at the original post. But I think we will see a lot more of it in 2007, right or wrong.

Hi David, That looks like an extremely interesting book that you've started working on. I'll be sure to keep a close eye on this blog and your main one. Have a look at our blog: http://blog.futurelab.net - we aggregate and mix with own content. Currently we dont have a contributor in your field - i.e. music. Might be of interest for you? Let me know, and I'll get more specific. Stefan
