What kind of self-respecting cycling blogger am I to not write even a single post during the Tour de France? Disgrace! I tell you. Although I have been a completely lousy blogger, I have been a good cyclist. (Relatively speaking.) I've been riding consistently. And, I might even say that I don't hate climbing any more. A few months ago my friend dragged me up some canyon roads that I had been dreading and told me that I should do this sort of ride every week. While the pain of climbing up 3000 feet almost made me cry (not really),... Continue reading

Only one more stage left for Paris-Nice... but I simply can't focus on cycling right now. I know. Crazy. Andy's brother Frank was riding, yet I haven't been able to pay attention to the race for the past 2 days. (Frank withdrew today, too. So even less reason for me to watch.) It's the damn earthquake. I really haven't slept much. I've been glued to my TV for 2 days. I am grateful that all my family and friends are safe in Japan. But hundreds of thousands of people are struggling to survive in this catastrophe. I was in Kobe... Continue reading

My Friend Ko forwarded me this article from Outside Online. It's a good read and probably the most comprehensive of similar articles I have read! The article touches on how cyclists are seen by the society and why we are seen the way we are. Also it talks about the never-ending dillemma of cyclists vs. drivers sociologically, emotionally and legally. Enjoy. Continue reading

While most of the country is freezing, we are blessed with this gorgeous weather lately. So, I have been riding. Nothing extra exciting to write about... but just to get back into some sort of riding shape. A lot of base training. And, I'm thinking about doing a 5K/10K this summer. Start from 5K and maybe move up to 10K. Turns out I can run 5K slowly now (with some cursing in the middle), so my goal is to finish a 5K strong in a few months and maybe do a 10K later in the summer. Stay tuned for my... Continue reading

We talk about how silly we look in our cycling clothes. I mean. Really. They are all stretchy and hug every curve I don't have to show off and hug them a little too tight. They usually come in either black, red and occasionally white for men, and women's stuff is all pink, baby blue and purple in the floral patterns that make me vomit quite honestly. And, what's up with the helmet, right? I gave up looking for a helmet that makes me look good. That just doesn't exist. It's like a unicorn. It's just a fantastic idea. I've... Continue reading

I don't know what happened to that hot weather we had for a few days. Now it's so cool (chilly) that I may never have to worry about this. But, I have a couple of notes to share with you... About 2 week ago when it was really hot, I decided to go ride Mandeville not so early in the morning. It was about 11 am. Note to self. 1) Wake up early and ride early when it's hot. 11 am in the windless canyon with no shade in sight is hell. At one point as I was bitching, moaning... Continue reading

On a sunny Sunday afternoon, I was going down the twisty road of Palos Verdes East. It is an awesome, fast descent well worth the 2-mile switchbacks you have to climb before that. The patch of Palos Verdes East I was riding is a 2 way street (one lane going up and one lane going down) with no bike lane. Not only was there no bike lane, there wasn't really any shoulder to ride on. The shoulder was about 6" wide and covered in mud and sand making it very slippery. So, to be safe, I was riding in the... Continue reading

This might be it. I might have just found THE perfect saddle. I've only ridden a couple of hours, so let's not rush to any conclusion here, but I might have. Just. Found. It. This is Specialized's Romin saddle in 155mm. It is a men's saddle, but comes in 155mm, which is the width a lot of my girl friends ride. The cutout in the middle is wide enough to help with the pressure. The cutaway is big enough that it doesn't dig into the back of my thighs. And the curve up at the end holds my butt in... Honestly I'm a little (a lot) sad and depressed that there's no more stages left to watch on my DVR. The TdF is like crack... I'm having withdrawal symptoms. Here are 10 sings you are a TdF addict. 1) Your Facebook and Twitter are all about cycling. 2) Your good, understanding, cycling friend tells you that you are too crazy about the Tour and Andy. 3) Your friend asks if you are ok after Andy loses time to his competition. 4) You quote Jens Voigt in your daily conversation. (i.e. I say, "Shut up, legs!") 5) You and all your... Continue reading

The Tour is over. What did you all think? It was a lot of drama this year. When Phil and Paul say that this was the most exciting tour in decades, I believe them. Stage 15 was hard for me. Like, screaming-and-crying-in-front-of-the-TV-at-8-in-the-morning hard. For those who missed the stage, (how could they?!) it was the stage where my favorite Andy Schleck lost 39 seconds to Alberto Contador. What was so controversial about the stage was that Contador attacked when Andy was having a mechanical problem. Cycling is a sport of lots of unwritten rules... a gentleman's agreement if you will.... Continue reading

Hi Angels. I must confess that I haven't written about the last day of the Tour of California. I also haven't been riding much. All I have been doing is to be a bad blogger. I apologize. Almost all of June, I was out of town on a job and vacation. It's been a few weeks since I got back, and the dust has finally settled. So here I am. First of all. The Tour has started! Hope you guys are watching it on Versus or Tour Tracker. It's been truly, truly exciting. As Ben wrote in the previous post,... Continue reading

As much as I hate to agree with you so publicly, I will have to this time. The only thing is that I think Lance might finish on the podium. He is, after all, Lance. I'm sending Contador bad joojoo so he'll suffer. And then it's all Andy's (or Frank's.) So excited. Nonetheless.

Day 2 of my cycling saga continues... Saturday May 22 was the Time Trial stage in Downtown LA. For this race, they shut down most of Downtown for the first time since the Olympics in 1984... it was mad. Thanks to Ben, we got to purchase VIP tickets to see the riders in action. Really close. At first we were in the designated VIP tent... with free booze and food, we thought it was the place to be, but the view from there looked like this. Lots of people in front of us. Not good. So, we decided to ditch... Continue reading

I never said I wasn't a big dork. I never denied that I'm a little obsessive. But now I know. For sure. That I'm a little crazy. Crazy about this business of cycling. (And a boy named Andy Schleck.) Here's part 1 of my 3-day saga following the Amgen Tour of California. Amgen Tour of California is an 8-stage race. (More on AToC here. ) This year, they started the race in Nevada City and over the last week, they made their way down to Southern California. Last Friday was a stage in Big Bear, which is about 2 hours... Continue reading

A cycling group that I started with my friends, team a2b, had our kick-off event yesterday, and it was a huge success. Over 30 people came to ride with us on a bit chilly, Mother's day morning. 5 of us, the "officers", for lack of a better term, got up extra early to set up everything. The food is loaded in to Cynergy, tents are up, drinks are cold... With a few words from our officers and it's time to roll. Olivia and I lead a Beginner's ride, which was about 32 miles to Manhattan Beach and back. Katie, Jenn... Continue reading

Hello Angels. Hope you are enjoying this nice weather and riding a lot. I haven't been riding much on the road, but I am taking a certification course for track riding at LA Velodrome. More on that sometime when I'm done watching Battlestar Galactica. Even though I'm a lazy blogger, my friend definitely is not. Let me introduce Cortney. Cortney is a friend of a friend... I have not met her yet. But like me, she's a cycling enthusiast and that practically makes her my sister. :) She just had her first crit race last weekend. She's written a piece... Continue reading

What a beautiful day to ride! Did you go out to ride today? I did after a night of drinking half a bottle of wine and a glass of beer. Why? Why did I have to drink that much? I don't know... but it tasted so good... I'm just silly like that. I wasn't feeling all that great at 7:30 am, but I'm glad I went to ride. Riding always makes me happy. Never fails. Speaking of happiness... I have an exciting announcement to make. For the past 6 months or so, I have been working with my friends to... Continue reading

Hello. Sorry I haven't been writing much lately. After finishing the century, I wasn't being able to set the next goal, and that made me utterly unmotivated. I spent a lot of time eating out, having a few (too many) cocktails with friends, being a couch potato... and put on a few extra pounds! I guess that's going to be my motivation to get back on the bike! One thing for sure is that I got my much needed rest though. Even with a layer of fat I must lose before the summer, I feel pretty good and refreshed! Before... Continue reading

Velodramatic is one of my favorite cycling blogs. Mr. Michael Robertson is the man behind beautiful cycling photography and interesting blog. I adore his photographs. Last Christmas, I bought a piece from him as a gift. I've been eyeing one for myself. No, not one with Andy. Mr. Robertson recently posted a thing about iPad as a bike computer in his blog, so here it is. Repost from Velodramatic (Photo credit : Michael Robertson) Continue reading

You are climbing up a hill, exhausted and look down on your computer. It says the climb (incline) is 6% grade. What does that mean? 6% sounds like little, but you are definitely feeling it. When you go to and see the elevation chart for a route, parts of it is 4% grade average, but there is a mile section where it's 9% grade average. Is this route hard? Let's talk about elevation chart. What about sex and lies? Well. I hate to break it to you, but every time I put anything remotely sensational in my title, everyone... Continue reading

Some of my friends are running the LA Marathon tomorrow! They all have their reasons why they want to run the excruciating 26.2 mile... I can say this as a non-runner. It's all pretty inspiring. Good luck to you all. See you on San Vicente!!! Continue reading

Thank you, Ben, for such a sweet post! (I'm so badass!! And, yes, I do have a questionable taste in men.) After reading your post, I feel guilty that I've been having such a lazy week... totally not badass. Not much workout, not much riding and not much energy. The only thing I've been doing ok this week is to convert oxygen into CO2. Blah! As a matter of fact, at one point on Wednesday, I felt so unmotivated and exhausted that I was begging all my Facebook friends to somehow motivate me to go out and do something! While... I woke up Saturday morning knowing it would rain. But, I simply couldn't bring myself to drive all the way up to the gym to work out for an hour. So, I got on my bike and rode. About 60 mins into the ride, I felt the first rain drop on my face. It started very slow. The raindrops hitting the trees and leaves in the canyon made light tapping noises, and soon they became this music of raindrops. I was riding on one of the canyon roads, so it felt like I was completely engulfed by this music. I... Continue reading

Hello Angels! What is up with this weather, huh? I love the rain. And, I love that cold white fluffy stuff in the mountains, too. But, when I'm riding, I like to stay dry. Living in So Cal, I don't own a lot of rainy-day cycling gear! Yikes. That being said, I met someone who just moved from the SF area, and he laughed at me after hearing me bitch about the weather. So, I'd better shut up and ride... Most of you should know my friend Ben, who writes about pro cycling. Well, our guest blogger Ben has a... Continue reading

Did you see Shaun White fly? He defies gravity. I tuned in just as he was riding, and everyone after him looked, well, normal. The way he rides is not normal. So amazing. Although, I'm not sure if he's "HOT"... Well, the way he rides is. I just wish he would cut his hair. And, I love USA snowboarding team gear. Gore-Tex denim and red, white and blue plaid jacket. Sweet. Whoever designed them gets A+ from me. Oh, and who knew Nordic Combined was so interesting? When I say interesting, there's a cute guy in the US team... I... Continue reading
