Today, Lower School took part in a Tinkering session. This involved the children making and inventing things with a variety of recycled materials such as wood, sticks and bolts to name a few materials. The children were able to let their imaginations run free and create whatever they wanted. It was an amazing opportunity and the children gained invaluable skills from this experience. Take a look at some of their brilliant and very create inventions. Tinkering from Porchester Junior on Vimeo. Posted with Blogsy Continue reading

Today, Class 6 have started looking at instructions and explanations. They had to work in groups and one person needed to give specific instructions to draw a picture. Whilst having fun and laughing at the results, we discovered how hard it is to give precise instructions to others. Over the next couple of weeks we are going to learn the skills needed to give and write precise explanations and instructions. Posted with Blogsy Continue reading

Today, Class 6 went to the Galleries of Justice to learn about the British justice system. We took part in a mock trial, looked around some prison cells and went on a crime and punishment tour. We had a fantastic day and learnt many new things about the British justice system that we did not know before. Well done Class 6, you were brilliant ambassadors of the school. Class 6 have been looking at how emotive language is used to try and persuade people to do something. Today we made our own RSPCA adverts using emotive language, here are a few of them. This week, Class six have been set a difficult challenge! They needed to create their own TV adverts to sell a normal everyday product. Each group picked an item from the classroom and thought about techniques they could use to persuade people to buy it. The children needed to think of everything that we have learnt in Literacy and then they needed to work as a team to plan and direct their very own advert. Every group has also shown some very impressive ICT skills by using iMovie to put their advert together. I am so impressed with you all Class Six, well done. Today, Class 6 went to Brackenhurst. The day started with us going on a nature walk where we collected different colours of nature that we found and then we made some lovely woolley bookmarks. After lunch, we were able to go and see the sheep and lambs. Although we didn't see any lambs being born, we were able to meet some twins that were only an hour old and even got to name them! We ended our day by having the experience of making our own cheese. I am so impressed with how well behaved Class 6 were today, they were true ambassadors for the school. Well done Class 6 and thank you for such a lovely day. Class 6 visit Brackenhurst from Porchester Junior on Vimeo. Posted with Blogsy Continue reading

We have been extremely lucky to have the author Jonny Zucker in school on Wednesday. Some of the children in Year 3/4 have been reading his amazing books, in the reading groups, on SerialMash. Jonny is an inspirational author and has written over 100 children's books. He spoke to the children about his books and what encouraged him to be an author. All of the children loved listening to him and I know that they will want to read many more of his books now. It was an absolute pleasure to meet him and a morning that we will remember for a long time. Thank you Jonny for coming into Porchester and inspiring us to read and write more stories. Class 6 have been learning all about the human body in Science. Over the last couple of weeks we have been focusing on the human skeleton, focusing on the different names of the bones and the job that they do. Today we are thinking about animal skeletons and how they are similar and different to ours. We have used these websites to help us think about how each animal is different: Mammal Skeletons Skeletons Continue reading

On Thursday we went to The Young Voices concert at the Motorpoint arena in Sheffield. We were given the amazing opportunity of singing with 4000 other children and also celebrities such as Mic Lowry and Lucy Spraggan. We all had a fantastic time and it was definitely an experience that we will all remember for a long time. Young Voices 2015 from Porchester Junior on Vimeo. Posted with Blogsy Continue reading
