Today Upper school had a fantastic visit from Doctor Sheridan, a scientist from university. We learnt about meteors and took part in experiments that show their effects on Earth. Class 6 have been doing even more eggsperimenting today. We discovered that eggs are not as fragile we thought, we squeezed the eggs really hard and found out it was not possible to break it. This is due to the pressure applied being spread evenly around the egg. We also experimented with a way to separate an egg yolk from the egg white, using a plastic bottle. We squeezed the bottle and as we let it go the yolk was transferred to the bottle. How do you think this happens? Posted with Blogsy Continue reading

Today, Class 6 have been thinking about the best materials that would protect an egg. We made our eggs into eggonauts and tested which material prevented them from cracking or breaking when dropped from a height. We tested paper, kitchen towel, felt, bubble wrap and fabric by wrapping it around the egg. In small groups, the children needed to think how we could make it a fair test and what needed to stay the same. We found out that bubble wrap was the best material to protect the egg. Why do you think that is? Super eggsperimenting Class 6, well done. Posted with Blogsy Continue reading

This week, Class 6 have been learning about algorithms in computing. Before we start to create our algorithms on the laptops we had to think about what we need to do to make this happen. We learnt that algorithms are the same as creating instructions that need to be followed. To try and get us thinking about how a computer would do this we created a set of instructions in a flow diagram. Working in pairs, everyone had the challenge to sort a box of smarties into colours. I am so impressed with you all Class 6, brilliant working out. Well done. Posted with Blogsy Continue reading

Today, Class 6 learnt about the different achievements and inventions that the Mayan's created. We used a sorting activity to order their achievements according to what we thought was the most important and influential. It was interesting to see our different ideas and opinions so we discussed our reasonings behind our decisions. The justifications for the decisions were very impressive and had clearly been thought about carefully. Well done Class 6, I am really impressed with your work today Posted with Blogsy Continue reading

Today, lower school had an Egyptian day. We had a fantastic day learning more about the Ancient Egyptians. We were lucky enough to have Partake come in to do some drama with us, based on the mummification ritual. They also demonstrated how people would have dressed in Ancient Egyptians times and the reasoning behind each thing. Within our classes we also made Egyptian collars and cartouche necklaces. It has been a very busy and exciting day. Take a look at our video to see some of the moments from the day. Ancient Egyptian Day from Porchester Junior on Vimeo. Posted with Blogsy Continue reading
